Alberto Moreno's Goal Stole the Show in Mario Balotelli's Liverpool Debut

Liverpool added Mario Balotelli from AC Milan last week for a fee reported around $30 million. The move made headlines across the soccer world, which is no surprise given the Italian’s “Why Always Me?” reputation. Far less heralded was the Reds addition of Sevilla left back Alberto Moreno for $20 million earlier this month.

The young Spaniard stole (some of) the spotlight Sunday at White Hart Lane against Tottenham with this standout run-and-finish that put Liverpool ahead 3-0 in the second half. Andros Townsend’s transfer fee went down by a few million after Moreno’s undressing of him that started the movement that culminated in his first goal for Liverpool.

Left back was a consistent trouble-spot in Brendan Rodgers lineup last season. Although Moreno had a night to forget vs. Manchester City, the 22-year-old flashed some of his potential in the goal to beat Hugo Lloris.

Ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher appears have been won over by Moreno, despite the small sample size.

Balotelli didn’t get on the scoresheet vs. Spurs, but did have a great chance stopped by Lloris two minutes into the match. The Italian striker’s workrate across the field, tracking back on defense was a pleasant surprise.

Tottenham has now lost its last three league games vs. Liverpool by a combined 12-0 scoreline.
