Adele put an end last night to speculation that she will perform during halftime of Super Bowl LI by announcing that she’d declined the gig. While performing a concert in Los Angeles, the British singer informed the crowd she wouldn’t be taking the field in Houston next February.

“That show is not about music,” she told the crowd. “And I don’t really — I can’t dance or anything like that. They were very kind, they did ask me, but I said no.”

Adele and the Super Bowl halftime show are a natural marriage. She’s an international superstar with appeal across genres. She’s also uncontroversial. What many don’t realize is that there are a very limited number of acts suitable for the high-profile gig.

Beyonce can’t do it every year — and every year she doesn’t comes with the risk of getting terrible feedback.

It will be interesting to see which group will serve as the back-up plan. The smart money has to be on Fall Out Boy because, hey, they’ll do anything sports-related.
