Manchester United, barring an Arsenal collapse, will finish fourth, after spending $160 million in transfer fees last summer. Manager Louis van Gaal, soccer’s closest approximation of Jim Harbaugh, assessed the season in a rambling speech at a team banquet. He starts slowly then builds to a crescendo. Conclusion: Manchester United lost key matches to Chelsea and Arsenal, but was the better team on both occasions.
Van Gaal finished, went back to his seat, then came back on stage to thank the lady saxophone player.
Solid effort, though it was no “FC Bayern.”
