By Brazilian striker standards, Fred has a simple name. He scored a simple — but ugly — goal less than two minutes into today’s Confederations Cup final against Spain to put the hosts ahead 1-0. The ball pinballed around the area, Fred fell over in a crowd of players inside the six yard box and managed to blast it past Iker Casillas while on the ground. Just like you draw it up, duh.

The goal looked more like something you’d see on a rec league kickaround than an international final, but they all count the same. There was also a clear handball on everybody’s favorite Spanish player, Sergio Busquets, that went uncalled not that it mattered too much since Fred poked it in.

It was the first time Spain had been scored on in 810 minutes of knockout soccer.

Game on.
