NCAA Tournament 2013 Bracket Breakdown: East
The Top Seed is Flawed: Two big knocks on Indiana this year – they tend to drift away from Cody Zeller, who is their best offensive interior player; and they’re not physical enough. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, their 2nd round opponent (NC State or Temple) will be rugged. Zeller will have trouble with NCSU’s physical Richard Howell. And UNLV, should it get by Cal and Syracuse, is also a physical team. I also have my concerns about Tom Crean playing too many guys instead of a tight rotation, but that probably won’t be an issue until the Sweet 16/Elite 8.
Future NBA Players: Cody Zeller will be a late-lottery pick in June. I think Victor Oladipo has played his way into the Top 10, and I wouldn’t rule out the Top 5. Anthony Bennett of UNLV, who some have compared to Larry Johnson, appears to be a Top 5 lock in the draft. Earlier this season, I thought Michael Carter-Williams of Syracuse could have made a run at the No. 1 pick. That won’t happen, but he’s probably a Top 10 pick.
Sick Shooters Bracket: Jordan Hulls of Indiana shoots 46.4 percent from deep. James Southerland of Syracuse could be the best shooter in the country. Scott Wood of NC State is a 3-point assassin, who set a school record. Rotnei Clarke might have the best range and quick trigger of any shooter in college basketball (41.2 percent).
GIF that represents the region: Victor. Oladpio. How can a miss represent the region? It’s spectacular, close, and probably what will happen to Indiana in the tourney.
Best arrest of the bracket: Khalif Wyatt, Temple’s leading scorer, was arrested last June in Atlantic City for solicitation of a prostitute.
Upset special: Davidson (14) over Marquette (3). Which Golden Eagles team shows? The one that won at Wisconsin, or lost at Green Bay 11 days later? Last quality win away from home? At Pittsburgh January 12th. Jay Bilas picked Marquette to get to the Elite 8. The Wildcats haven’t lost since Jan. 14th.
Regular season rematch: UNLV (5) vs. Cal (12). Back in December, UNLV went into Berkeley and won, 76-75 on a last-second tip-in. UNLV’s best player at the time, Mike Moser, suffered a dislocated elbow early. Freshman Anthony Bennett had a breakout game – 25 points, 13 rebounds. The Rebels collected 13 offensive rebounds. Cal missed 13 of 28 foul shots.
Regional season rematch that could happen: Remember in Maui when Butler and Marquette played a tremendous game and Rotnei Clarke hit this miracle shot at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs a win? They could meet again in the 2nd round.
Clutch: Brandon Paul of Illinois. I’m not sure what to make of Colorado, which has lost three of five and was swept this season by Arizona State, and suffered losses to Utah and Wyoming, as well.
What about Brad?: Butler missed the NCAA tournament last year, but went to the title game in 2010 and 2011. This year, the Bulldogs aren’t as sound defensively (53rd in Ken Pom), went 0-3 against defensive-minded Saint Louis, aren’t very good at point guard, and are opening as just a 3.5-point favorite against Bucknell from the Patriot League. Do the Bulldogs have a shot at making a run?
Nate Silver says …: Indiana.
GIF No. 2 because people love GIFs: Ah, Cody Zeller. The Villain of the Big Ten! People hate that guy!

I’m sure this is late, but it’s still hilarious.

Howell and Leslie will have 4 fouls between them 3 minutes into that game if it happens.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:05 PM
Great, great line.

You’ve got to be joking. Kid is a turnover machine. He also looks to be very immature attitude-wise. If someone takes him in this upcoming draft top-10 the GM should be fired.

They did?

What the name of that Albino on Cuse, Trish?

You can’t make this up:

Yep, lost to Pitt in the CBI semifinal.

Everyone here likes to rip the Falcons, but this is a good piece about how far they’ve come since Vick’s arrest.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
holy shit. my gf’s body is no where similar to her’s, but she is probably 3 months farther along than KK is, and looks no where close to that. gross.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
Carter Williams and Mason Plumlee both saw their stock fall the last couple months.
I feel like this bracket is a lot of meh after the top 2 seeds.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:19 PM
Fuck Rotnei Clarke he is an absolute chucker. Butler needs to feed Roosevelt Jones

You mean your future wife. Push Arkansas Fan Girl down the stairs before its too late.

Can you explain what you meant by, “Plus, nobody likes an elite recruit, right?” in the most hated post?
March 18th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
I, too, would like to hear what that was all about.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
Great link, Husker.
Also, has Jason Whitlock decided to go all in as a troll? In his column today he posits that Britney Griner is the most famous and marketable college basketball player in the land. 2nd most famous? Skyler something from (I think) Notre Dame.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
I don’t know if I would go full on chucker, dude can shoot. but he’s allergic to any kind of defense and he has a hard time creating his own shot. but if he is open he is money in the bank.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:26 PM
that is low down dirty.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
Sorry, but Griner is not that marketable. Sucks that it’s true, but she’s not attractive enough. He could be right about the ND player, though. She plays at a power school, is hot and I think good at basketball.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
She’s hot. Griner looks and sounds like a dude. And all she does is pivot and put her hands up.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Whitlock going too far to make a point (that CBB is lacking in stars)? Color me shocked.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Any internet snark about Skylar Diggins will not be tolerated here on the The Big Lead comments section.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Haha wow.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
More like Skylar Diggin’inthegapes, am I right?

I’m surprised TBL hasn’t had a post on the cover of USA Today. It said the tournament will generate $1 billion is ad sales, the most of any event in the country. More than the NFL playoffs.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
Though it makes sense. Advertisers know the only thing we watch live anymore is sports. So their commercials will be seen.

CBS would have a billion more if they didn’t run Master’s ads every commercial break and sold that time to other advertisers.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
Sounds like she’s pretty fundamental.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
Can’t believe it’s been a year already since CBS started airing the commercial about the people who drove 900 miles to get a Dorito Taco…that had to be in every other ad block

I have watched every Butler game thi year. Numerous times per game he dribbles down the court and chucks a three. No passes. Plus against VCU he looked scared as shit with the press
March 18th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
That’s a white person thing, though. Seeing that many black dudes with tats running at you will freak out most of us.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
Syracuse wont get far
/reverse jinx
//please please please
March 18th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
I’ll admit to not seeing him at all this year, so I am basing my assessment on his 3 years at Arkansas. the main problem I can see based on what you said is that he isn’t a ball handler at all, and has no business bringing the ball up the court. dude shouldn’t be handling the ball much in the press either IMO.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:42 PM

they do run a nice trapping diamond press.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
Not going to lie. Mildly excited for the NIT.

I watched more college hoops the past three days than I have in a long, long time, and my question is: when did they stop calling travelling in college hoops? I know they stopped calling it years ago in the NBA, at least for the top players, but I saw so much uncalled travelling this weekend that my head buzzed.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
You’ve got to be nervous as hell for this first game.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Yeah, VCU’s “Havoc” will get them to the Sweet 16. Plus I love the coach Wacka Shocka Flame
March 18th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
I actually like their Man-to-man run & jump more. Saw a quote fronm Smart saying that a few years ago during their Final Four run he really didn’t have “his” players so he couldn’t pick up as much as he wanted.
March 18th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
when did they stop calling travelling in college hoops?
I noticed that as well this past weekend. The refs have been generally bad all year, but this traveling thing is new. In the OSU/Wisc game, some big got the entry pass, made four steps and dunked. Not a dribble in sight. The announcers didn’t even say anything.
So, to answer your question, recently.

A backcourt duo of MCW and Austin Rivers would guarantee a perpetual lottery team. Lock it up, New Orleans!

i like jim larranaga’s scramble the best.
