Nani Sent Off For Controversial Red Card Against Real Madrid [GIF]

Manchester United midfielder Nani was sent off with a straight red card for this foul. Deserved? We say yes. He clearly had no malicious intent, though recklessly going studs in like this renders that irrelevant.

Nani? Please tell me that is Portugese for something like tiger killer or firewalker.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
Let’s get an opinion on this from someone who blogs about cats and Kate Upton.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:16 PM
Given how greasy Nani is if he’s a firewalker he has to be flat out uninsurable.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:18 PM
No way duffy. He has his eyes on the ball and is trying to settle it. He has no idea Arbeloa is coming, nevermind running full speed through the ball. In England it might not even be a yellow. Fucking Euro pussies.

Not sure what the controversy is. Guy went in kung fu, studs up not even looking. There’s no intent, yes, but that should always be a red. It’s reckless.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:20 PM
Problem is this plays in to the dangerous play aspect of it. Going studs up not looking isn’t an excuse, it’s a bookable offense.
Still harsh, but there’s zero excuse based on not looking.

/Googles Nani
Jheri curls? Eh, to each his own.

Hmmmmm, what say you about this?

He has his eyes on the ball and is trying to settle it.
If he does that kung fu style into an oppenent or with his hands, it should be red.
He has no idea Arbeloa is coming
Made the reckless point for me.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:23 PM
Hmmmmm, what say you about this?
Should be red. Think everyone thought that at the time.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:23 PM
Actually, there is. It’s called keeping your eyes on the ball.
For a second there, I thought Fergie was going to run out on the pitch and beat the ref into a fine powder.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:26 PM
Garbage. Trying to play the ball in the air when no one is close to you–when you initiate the move–is not reckless. Jumping into a crowd with your studs up is. Nani did one of those things, not both.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:27 PM
Actually, no there isn’t, the definition of reckless play is acting in disregard of the consequence to an opposing player, and going studs up without looking is exactly what that means. Granted the rules of the game state that should be a caution unless the referee deems there to have been excessive force used.

Serge Ibaka thinks Nani is an asshole
March 5th, 2013 at 4:29 PM
Did he play the ball or the man?
March 5th, 2013 at 4:29 PM
Heat fan’s response to the Timberwolves Harlem Shake vid. Pretty weak.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:29 PM
Bullshit they were both running at the ball, no way you can say that no one was close.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:29 PM
I buy that it’s “reckless”, but unfortunately that term is no where to be found in the rules of the game. The applicable sending off offenses (serious foul play and violent conduct) both require the use of “excessive force.” Clearly doesn’t apply here.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:30 PM
Mind you, I’m not a Man U fan by any means… I just thought it was a bad call. Yellow is fine, but a straight red, FOR ME, means intent was involved.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:31 PM
That’s fair, and again, reckless play is supposed to be a yellow is what I’m saying.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:32 PM
when no one is close to you–when you initiate the move
Did Nani jump 30 feet in the air? Dude was close enough to him to get his boot in his chest.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:33 PM
I absolutely can, because that’s what happened. Nani watched the ball the entire time, and the Real player came at it at an angle. Whatevs, it is what it is. Man U has had chances to tie it back up, even being a man down.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:34 PM
I would point you to FIFA Law 12 – Fouls and Misconduct
March 5th, 2013 at 4:38 PM
You are right that it calls for a cautioning though not a sending off.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Ya I should have specified “under the sending-off offenses section” but whatever.
Expected to lose 6-1 on aggregate anyway. Which actually might have been preferable to this now that I think about it.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:42 PM
Reminded me of the De Jong foul on Alonso in the WC final. He didn’t get a red for that and it looked much worse.
Bayern is the favorite at this point I think.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:43 PM
Yeah that was worse but that’s also considered one of the worst officiating decisions in the history of the sport.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:43 PM

March 5th, 2013 at 4:43 PM
I’d have preferred a yellow, but the guy cant bitch about the red though. I’d say this was properly officiated and the err is more that similar refs fail to make the necessary bookings so some poor form gets a de facto endorsement.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:44 PM
Quote fail.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:47 PM
Roy Keane saying it was a red is the greatest trolling moment in sports broadcasting history.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:50 PM
If that was a straight red than this should’ve been an immediate execution.
/thoroughly enjoyed the Red though
March 5th, 2013 at 4:51 PM
Keano fucking nailed it. AND IS SOOOOOO BITTER
March 5th, 2013 at 4:52 PM
What DeusExMachina said.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:02 PM
And there’s a reason why England is the only place where you see people get horrific broken legs.
Intent is not a rule. It’s just something pundits, mostly English say.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:03 PM
“it shouldn’t have been a red card because of an awful call made by a different referee three years ago derp derp derp”
March 5th, 2013 at 5:09 PM
Exactly. The rule for a sending off is “excessive force”. None of that here.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:11 PM
More of a joke, he got a red card because someone ran into his leg in this case. I’m cool with a red but would have understood yellow.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:11 PM
yeah, it’s easy to make that call watching a gif over and over. at game speed it just looks like a guy got studs to the cheddars. no surprise at the send off from me.
March 5th, 2013 at 5:16 PM
Issue for me is that you see guys bring the ball down like that all the time in a game. The impact to the chest wasn’t malicious as Nani didn’t see the other guy coming. I think it is just a foul with a talking to…possibly a yellow. A straight red seems awefully harsh unless Nani had some previous bad tackles in the same game.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:23 PM
If Arbeloa hits Nani on the side of the leg, it would have been a yellow on Arbeloa. Red cards shouldn’t be handed out on such slim margins. Nani made a legitimate attempt to play a ball coming over his shoulder, a play that almost every player would have made in that same situation. Tough call, and the rules don’t make it easy on the ref.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:28 PM
Nani has the same right to play the ball as Arbeola does in that situation. That’s like saying Arbeloa should have been booked for running into Nani’s league. It’s a 50/50 ball with not malicious intent. I’m not even sure his studs went right into Arbeola’s chest.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:30 PM
nani nani boo boo.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:57 PM
Christ on a crutch. Fergie and Mourinho said it didn’t deserve a red, and one of those two fellows manages the other team. We can’t even see if the studs even hit the guy, and considering he ran full bore into Nani, he wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings either. He gives a yellow to Nani and everybody shrugs and goes on with the game. He gives a red and completely alters the entire CL.
Better damn sure know that it was a clear red in that situation or keep it in your pocket.
