Ashley Benson … a lot of people are prank calling Mike Francesa these days … Maker’s Mark – back to 90 proof! … still waiting for the Redskins to change their nickname … news anchor arrested, is bleeding in his mugshot … a Louisville cheerleader to look for at the Final Four … so was Jerry Buss 79 or 80? … what happened to Time, Inc? …

The NFL is now allowing teams to use the Bat Signal to signal trades? Is Commissioner Goodell aware of this?

Rangers drew what, 3M last season? Probably more than a few real fans in that number.
Sounds like both sides are grieving the break-up.
February 19th, 2013 at 8:23 AM
Purely speculating. The victim’s Ipad will reveal the motive. Ms. Steenkamp was not “all in” on Oscar. Everyone says she was so kind, a law student etc. All very true, I’m sure. But she was also was beautiful, vain, flirtatious and had many male admirers hitting /texting etc. He – for however long he stayed with anyone – was obsessive. Not a good mix. “Never make a pretty woman your wife …” She didn’t deserve it. He deserves what’s coming to him.

February 19th, 2013 at 8:33 AM

Phil Henderson had one of the most famous dunks in Duke history when he threw it down on a freshman Alonzo Mourning in the NCAA tournament. Dunkuary.
February 19th, 2013 at 8:41 AM

February 19th, 2013 at 8:41 AM
I’m surprised Henderson didn’t make it as a pro. Really liked his game, though he could be a 2-guard.
As for Vanna … yea, yes, yes.

February 19th, 2013 at 8:44 AM
Sad to hear about Henderson, only 44. Way too young. Is Gerald Henderson (another former Duke player) related to him?

how good was the Following last night?
i have never watched a series on Fox – maybe not since 90210, the original – and it’s really excellent.
nope, never watched X-Files. (watched Simpsons, but it was pre-90210, i think … ?)

Vanna looked spectacular, even liked the sunglasses on top of her head. Wonder if she ever made it up on stage.
Aaron Paul on TPIR was hilarious.
February 19th, 2013 at 8:55 AM
Compared to what else is out there, I’d rank this at the top of the heap right now. Yesterday’s episode was great and I can also add that it seems to be a big hit with the younger crowd (a lot of talk about it in my high school film studies class).

February 19th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
how good was the Following last night?
EW posted a few of the opening minutes to next week’s show. Should be interesting. Bacon looks like he is about to antagonize the hell out of the 3.

February 19th, 2013 at 9:01 AM
i was thinking more along the lines of network television. the bar is set pretty low there. but i’d compare The Following to when Prison Break first started…i wouldn’t compare that to The Sopranos, The Wire, or whatever else was around at that time but both got/are getting solid ratings and decent reviews.

He is supposedly one of the nicest people in Hollywood. He looks like he should be a meth head serial killer, but that is the burden that 50+ year old actors face for staying in shape.

I’m honestly shocked by that. for some reason the only song I think of when I hear that band name is that runaway train song, which is fucking horrific.
I’m not a fan, but they were supposed to be the next Replacements. But, then they had the hit and tried to go pop and well, now Mole is seeing them 20+ years later. The lead singer with the dumb hair used to date Wynona Ryder pre-crazy days. The early 90s were an odd time.

You’ll be waiting forever, because it ain’t happening.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:39 AM
They actually had a few hits, Just Like Anyone was another one. I knew like all of three songs but people there were really into it. Twenty bucks for a good rock show is always worth it.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:40 AM
shit, that’s right. that is the terrible song I was thinking of. I guess they had 2 awful songs then.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:40 AM

February 19th, 2013 at 9:42 AM
by odd do you mean badass?
Yeah, I guess. That was my coming of age time. Grunge ruled, but bands like Soul Asylum catered to the pre-Dave Matthews band crowd. And Wynona Ryder was considered the best actress of her generation at the time. Just weird to take a step back. Also, Tommy Stinson was a member of SA while he was in GNR.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:42 AM
If The Following is as bad as The Raven, I’m not shocked by those who like it.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:43 AM
Soul Asylum
After the success of the album with Runaway Train, Black Gold, Somebody to Shove, their follow up had a song called Misery, Inc. Decent enough song.
Soul Asylum goes on Letterman. Well, apparently, in the song they did a little trumpet part that rips the trumpet part from Silly Little Love Songs by McCartney (Wings?). Letterman’s show would pay the royalties for songs and they said DO NOT do the trumpet bit b/c they werent paying the massive royalties for the McCartney song.
So in the late part of their performance, the guy from Soul Asylum pulls out a trumpet and busts out one round of notes for the song. Paul Schaffer (sic) runs over and rorcibly takes the trumpet from the guy and they go to commercial.

Twenty bucks for a good rock show is always worth it.
Good call. Especially in a small venue with beverages available.
Saw the Sweet Tea Project (Ed Rollins from Collective Soul) a few weeks back in an old house-turned-music-venue a few weeks back. Lots of fun and got to meet all the band members after the show.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:44 AM
More than that. That band was beaten into the ground up here. Just because they’re from here doesn’t mean everyone wants to hear them.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:45 AM
I was actually liking the following after 2 or 3 episodes. But last night’s was so bad I’m done with it. Last night’s was horrible television.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:46 AM
True Romance had Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Samuel L. Jackson, James Gandolfini……and Balki from Perfect Strangers.
And that is only about half of the actors that became/were famous. Val Kilmer, Christian Slater, Patty Arquette, Micheal Madsen, Micheal Rappaport, Chris Penn (RIP), and Tom Sizemore.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:46 AM
How soon we forget about their cover of Sexual Healing
Wow, totally forgot about that. What an awful cover. I remember it being on some really bad alternative compilation back in the day.

granted, i was about 10-11, but i loved it. gangster rap, end of hair metal, tons of new bands (grunge and metal), hell even country was ok. plus sports across the board was awesome.

So I guess you homos are all probably Mumford and Sons fans
February 19th, 2013 at 9:47 AM
A friend of mine who runs a guitar shop here had the Soul Asylum guitarist stroll in one day sometime in the late 90s or so. He strutted around giving off every “Do you know who I am?” vibe he could, making eye contact with people hoping they’d notice. Finally my friend asks, “Do you need some strings or something…?” Guitarist guy rolled his eyes and stormed out.

February 19th, 2013 at 9:53 AM
WTF?!?!?!?!
1984-1988.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:53 AM
Although I imagine your age and the kind of music you liked greatly influences your opinion. So yeah, never mind.
/80′s still better though
February 19th, 2013 at 9:54 AM
I love hair metal, thrash, and grunge. So suck it.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:54 AM
Officially killed off by Marcy Playground.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:55 AM
Once upon a time I was a huge NBA junkie. Then Jordan retired again.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:55 AM
seriously…just look at the albums that came out between 84-88. unreal.
personally though, id say the best period in the modern era (1950 on) was either 1959-65 or 1967-1973.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:55 AM
I’d move that to about late 1991. Then shit hit the fan right about when the 3rd STP album came out and the AIC guys were falling apart b/c everybody was on Heroin.
Melan Collie and the Infinite Sadness was the last great effort of that era, just trying to recall off the top of my head.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:55 AM
To me, Stinson was one of the guys from the Replacements. Had no idea he was in GnR.
/still will give Paul Westerberg solo stuff a listen
February 19th, 2013 at 9:55 AM
lol
February 19th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
holy shit that’s actually right…apologies scripty.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
Too much hair metal and cock rock. And the early stretch of the nineties had the biggest grouping of seminal rap.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
So I guess you homos are all probably Mumford and Sons fans
I keep going back to Dave Matthews. It is sanitary music females like.
I don’t see how this is even debatable, from ninety to ninety six or so is probably the best era of music of the last thirty years.
Yeah, ’90 – ’95. Maybe ’96. I have a friend that swears that our (roughly meaning college) music started dying after Woodstock ’94 and was completely dead by Woodstock ’99. Fucking Korn and Limp Biscuit.
Although, that was just popular music you could find on the radio. There are so many avenues for music nowadays that I think this is the best. I’ll never hear 99% of the stuff I like on terrestrial radio, but I can find it easily each day.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
seriously…just look at the albums that came out between 84-88. unreal.
90-94 is just as impressive.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:57 AM
You might be right. Definitely Maybe was released in 1994.
There’s a BBC production that goes over how every song on this album was made. Just like the Classic Album series. Definitely worth a viewing.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:57 AM
Wouldn’t go so far as to say “the best”, but it’s definitely the most diverse set of pretty good options in that era.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:57 AM
When bon jovi is the most popular rock band of an era, you know you’re fucked
February 19th, 2013 at 9:58 AM
I’ll stab a bitch who doesn’t side with the grouping of years that includes No Fences.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:58 AM
Fucking Korn
their first album, released in 94, was unreal. one of the few times i stopped what i was doing because of new music (was 14, probably interuppted my spank session).
February 19th, 2013 at 9:58 AM
The problem is I’m lazy. Back in the day, I used to always be looking for new bands to listen to. Now? I don’t put in the legwork.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
you rarely disappoint me, but this is one of those times.
purple rain, legend, ride the lightning, licensed to ill, joshua tree, apetite for destruction, master of puppets, 1984, bad, it takes a nation to hold us back, straight out of compton, operation: mindcrime…
that’s just off the top of my head. there’s some seminal rap in there too for ya.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
Holy shit. Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, LL, Kool Moe Dee, Public Enemy, EPMD and Eric B and Rakim all would like a word.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
I own this on DVD. It’s pretty entertaining. Love the part about how Noel wrote “Shakermaker” in the car while on the way to some execs office.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:00 AM
I think a lot of people have this problem. And it likely has to do with this:
February 19th, 2013 at 10:01 AM
When you’re in college, you are exposed to so much different music whether you want to be exposed to it or not. Once you leave that environment, you get a little lazy, I think and start just listening to more of what you already liked.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:02 AM
To me, Stinson was one of the guys from the Replacements. Had no idea he was in GnR.
/still will give Paul Westerberg solo stuff a listen
Yeah, Replacements were slightly ahead of my time. Good stuff. Also, Singles, horrible movie, great soundtrack. That’s how I was introduced to Paul Westerberg.
They actually just did a charity show together last week.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:02 AM
Yes. When Vanilla Ice was in his prime.
/Stop, Collaborate and listen
February 19th, 2013 at 10:02 AM
Jesus, forgot Whodini and Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, etc.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:02 AM
I had to google that Mole. Good old Garth Brooks. He was so freakin huge in the early 90′s.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:02 AM
Agree. I find myself listening to a lot of music from the 60s and 70s I wasn’t fully exposed to now.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:03 AM
I think it has to do with the record companies pushing out albums with once or two decent songs, and the rest of it being dreck. And then charging $18 for the disc.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:04 AM
have to agree, at least in my personal experience. i have more music than id be able to listen to in a decade…fig i should work on that first before consciously trying to find new stuff.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:04 AM

Creed and nickelback dont have that many albums
February 19th, 2013 at 10:06 AM
Then also few independent owned radio stations. Best option really is XM these days
February 19th, 2013 at 10:06 AM
They actually just did a charity show together last week.
I guess that was a lie. I swore I read that. Anyhow, Tommy and Paul did a charity EP for Slim.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:06 AM
Rap debate?
/lights the Dopeman signal
February 19th, 2013 at 10:06 AM
/Nods in a agreement.
//Country was bad ass at the time too. Lots of belly rubbin’ music then.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:06 AM
Sirius’ Deep Tracks channel is good for this.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:07 AM
When I was in college, I heard “Chain Hang Low” and Lil’ John every night. I don’t miss that.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:07 AM
Hawkeye -also pandora and other internet radio
February 19th, 2013 at 10:08 AM
Mumford & Sons are pretty fucking good actually
February 19th, 2013 at 10:08 AM
And then charging $18 for the disc.
Isn’t that comical now? They charged that and we paid for it.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:08 AM
Wagon Wheel.
If I ever get a clear shot at Old Crow Medicine Show, I promise I am taking it.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:09 AM
personally though, id say the best period in the modern era (1950 on) was either 1959-65 or 1967-1973.
No argument here, although I’d push 73 to even 76.
Great combination of listenable rock, rock-pop, country-rock.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:10 AM
All while destroying the enviornment with those CD longbox cases. Throw in McDonalds using polystyrene foam packaging at the same time and you had destruction of the earth.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:11 AM
Classic album.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:11 AM
When I was in college, I heard “Chain Hang Low” and Lil’ John every night. I don’t miss that.
I had neighbors that played Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” several times a week. As good as that disc is, I don’t miss that either.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:11 AM
The omission of the Rocky IV soundtrack is unforgivable
February 19th, 2013 at 10:12 AM
LOL. You act like that list is so strong. That shit can’t begin to fuck with what came before. It’s not even remotely close.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:13 AM
This was pre Chris Gaines.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:13 AM
jazz fusion exploded too…when that first hit before the whole genre became musical gymnastics, there was a tsunami of incredible albums.
the jaco pastorius self-titled album might be the greatest thing ever recorded.

i got sucked into a queen documentary thing, it was awesome. i always thought queen was a gimmicky, goofy band. nope, pretty solid. been jamming somebody to love me non stop since sunday.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:17 AM
sigh…that’s horrible. but every era had that crap…mole’s era had the fucking spice girls for fuck’s sake.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:17 AM
The soundtrack of my youth included lots of Outlaw/Honky Tonk Country, Wutang/Deathrow Rap, and Alternative Rock. I wasn’t totally into grunge but I did love the RHCPs, Beck, etc. What a great time to be young.
/Is quietly singing “Up against the wall redneck mother.”
February 19th, 2013 at 10:18 AM
OH HELL NO. those dudes were serious as a fucking heart attack when it came to music. they were a seriously excellent band.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:19 AM
I know, I just wanted an excuse to link that. It’s truly horrifying.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:22 AM
Uhhhhhh, what? When you say “right now,” does that include shows currently airing like Justified and The Americans? What about shows still in their runs but not yet into a new season like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Treme, Homeland, Parenthood, Breaking Bad and Man Men?
I only watched the pilot, but from what I saw, The Following is terrible.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
Wait until you hear the Oscar Pistorious 911 tape. The syncopation of the gunshots is just brilliant. He really lives between the notes, ya know?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
Speaking of the Americans, how freaking good has that show been through 3 episodes!
February 19th, 2013 at 10:26 AM
Holy cow, classic smokeshow.
Been listening to a lot of Of Monsters and Men lately. They are like Mumford’s Icelandic cousins. And their female lead singer is like Bjork part 2.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:26 AM
golf dorks- have an rbz driver, and i just dont like it. too light, too much spin. barely used titleist 910D2 for 150 i may buy. anyone play a D2?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:28 AM
yea, i like em a lot. you could get a dif shaft for your RBZ tho and that’d help with the spin and weight for cheaper than the d2 would be tho. just another option.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:29 AM
How many times have you listened to that Edward Sharpe “Home” song in the last two years? Eighty, ninety thousand?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
I the love the “Mumford & Sons are terrible” argument that’s reared it’s e-head in the last 12 months. The fact that it mostly comes from people bemoaning the state of popular music makes it even more rich.
“F the sellout Grammys man. Bunch of no-talent clowns win every year.”
/talented band wins
“Mumford & Sons sucks.”
February 19th, 2013 at 10:32 AM
The Bills can franchise tag either Levitre or Byrd? Is that correct?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:32 AM

February 19th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
yea, i like em a lot. you could get a dif shaft for your RBZ tho and that’d help with the spin and weight for cheaper than the d2 would be tho. just another option.

February 19th, 2013 at 10:34 AM
DOOL legend.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:34 AM
They’re not terrible, it’s just boring and uninspired tame music for white girls.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:37 AM
I like their new album. I saw them in NYC last year. Their show was defintiely…interesting. They are of the hippie ilk no doubt. As soon as the lights went down, smoke whent up in the ballroom.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:38 AM
I’d rather listen to Edward Sharpe and Avett Brothers before Mumford and Sons.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:39 AM
Here’s Vanna White on the Price is Right two years before landing on Wheel of Fortune.
Did you see that weightlifting set!?!
serious tho, what a doll
February 19th, 2013 at 10:56 AM
GBV >>>>>> replacements
old soul asylum was pretty good. hang time and the album after that (horse they rode in on) were really good, then runaway train happened. like many groups, a song that breaks a band into the mainstream gets copied by that band ever after until death.
zztop, dire straits are the best/worst examples
/happy birthday tommy iommi
February 19th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
I wish the 80′s never happened to them. Damn sythesizers.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
to each their own I guess, but how is it boring and uninspired? it’s not like there were a ton of musicians that use the banjo and mandolin outside of folk and bluegrass music.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Rappaport always reminds me of Bill Simmons, and vice versa.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Why would anyone watch the Grammys? The major awards have about as much to do with music as Red Lobster has to do with seafood. Any contest in which Taylor Swift can conceivably win is not a music event.
