Jovan Belcher, a Kansas City Chiefs linebacker, shot himself at Arrowhead Stadium today after allegedly shooting his girlfriend at her home earlier in the morning. According to Danny Parkins of 610 Sports Radio in KC, Belcher was confronted by coaches in the parking lot before shooting himself. From KCTV5:
The first shooting was reported about 8 a.m. at a home near 54th Street and Chrysler Avenue. The second shooting was reported a short time later at a Chiefs practice facility located on the Arrowhead facility.
Officials said the Chiefs player shot and killed his girlfriend and then drove to the practice facility where he shot and killed himself.
Belcher was 25 and in his 4th season with the Chiefs. Belcher just had a child.
Update: According to the Kansas City Star, the girlfriend’s mother witnessed her daughter’s shooting.
Update 2: According to @JasonLaCanfora, the KCPD says “GM Scott Pioli and Coach Romeo Crennel were outside team facility at the time Chiefs player killed himself.”
Update 3: Oh my god.
KCPD say the player thanked both men before taking his life, and that Pioli and Crennel did not feel threatened. KCPD not revealing identity

Brutal. Between those guys and the victim’s Mother, that is a shit ton of collateral damage and a very long road ahead of them all.

Such a sad story. I hope this doesn’t turn into another big concussion thing though.

Truth. My wife’s brother took his own life a week after we got engaged. Her family is just now emerging from it. I can only imagine how much more devestating this is given all the people involved somehow.

Maybe I’m not internet cool enough to joke about someone killing themselves. But the thought of a parent having to bury a child after witnessing her daughter being murdered along with a couple of guys just going about their routine Saturday before being confronted with what they were is heartbreaking to me. Then you think about the family of Belcher who have to deal with heartbreak, guilt and other emotions as well. It’s sad.

What’s already been an awful season in KC just got a whole lot worse for completely different reasons. Read that they had a 3 month old. Terrible.

This is just sad all around. The girl’s mother, Belcher’s family, the coaches…did he kill himself in front of them?
Awful news

Well said. This story is so incomprehensibly heartbreaking. I don’t think I could fathom burying my kid.
