Mark Stoops: New Kentucky Football Coach
Mark Stoops has accepted the Kentucky football coaching job according to Kentucky Sports Radio. Stoops had been the defensive coordinator at Florida State since 2009 and before that held the same position at Arizona.
I gotta say – I’m a bit surprised Stoops took this job. Look at the last four coaches at Kentucky – Joker Phillips, Rich Brooks, Guy Morriss, Hal Mumme. What have they done since leaving UK? It isn’t a springboard to a better job. It’s a basketball school. And then, take a look at the SEC East: Georgia, Florida, South Carolina … not to mention Vanderbilt is on a rise.
If Charlie Strong stays in Louisville – he’ll probably get a few calls in the coming weeks – Stoops has a major uphill climb. If Tennessee lands Jon Gruden, Stoops has a major uphill climb. Obviously, if neither of those happened, Stoops would be thrilled.
I’m just not sure why Stoops wouldn’t go the mid-major route – grab a job MAC or WAC, kick ass, then 2-3 years later get an attractive gig in a major conference.
Kentucky went 2-10 this season, and was 0-8 in the SEC. Stoops first call should be to … John Calipari. He’s going to need his support.
That leaves the following major jobs open: Arkansas, NC State, Auburn, Tennessee, California and Boston College.

It’s not hard to figure out, $EC calls, you listen. The MAC will still be there if he flames out in 2 or 3 years but at that point he’ll be 2 or 3 years of $2M/yr richer.

Finally, TBL nailed that Stoops was leaving.
Oh, other Stoops. Nevermind.

Rich Brooks had a couple of decent years there. It’s possible to have success at Kentucky.

He’s a good defensive coach, he’ll hit the ceiling there and then move on to bigger and better.

Too many Stoops.

the Razorback Foundation (Arkansas fund raising side) is meeting tonight to discuss the contract of the new coach. Hogs should be off this list by next week.

yea…how dare joker phillips not do anything since getting fired last week.

Whoever predicted Stoops to Kentucky last week must have had some inside info.

UK made it to a bowl game 5 years in a row only two years ago. Fans will give their support if you get us 6 wins. It’s a lower pressure environment, with lots of upside. If you can recruit OH and VA, and continue to hit GA and FL like the previous staffs you’ll assemble enough talent to win at least 2-3 SEC games a year. The 2006-2007 team beat #1 LSU, lots to Tebow by a TD, and had two opportunities to beat a UT team in multiple overtimes. That easily could have been a 9 win season. At UK.
Great hire and speculation is he’s bring Doley, Dameyune Craig, and Randy Shannon on the staff. UK’s AD has said all along he’s willing to join the SEC arms race and pay big dollars. Looks to be true.

I’ve grown to hate the word “troll” because I feel it is used too often. regardless, I think you’re just trolling now. Jon Gruden is not going to be Tennessee’s head coach.

And didn’t Rich Brooks retire, which is why they had Joker Phillips as the head coach in waiting? If you retire you’re not really supposed to do anything.
Hal Mumme should retire but I think he’s still coaching at an FCS school somewhere.

You know TBL and Hockey don’t mix unless there is a famous hot girlfriend involved.

KC, if NC State is listed as a major job then Colorado has to be too.

From that last link I posted.
New favorite prospect. He was also using Brendan Smith’s ID. Who is the Wings most prized prospect and future all star.

Good move by Stoops. Parlaying a lower-tier gig in a major conference worked for Saban, Miles and Chizik.

Wait, what? Who is Doley? Tell me you don’t mean Dooley, because, well, you know he is shitty right? Like, woefully shitty.

I think I want him at Arkansas, not sure though.

I have nothing against Colorado. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self to do what it takes to get lots of scholarships and go to either CU, ASU, or any of a number of Southern California schools.

you’re getting sarkisian, enjoy 7-6 year in and year out.

at least they’re acknowledging the problem.

Love me some Hal Mumme. He beat Louisville in his first game like 65-30. They didn’t win a ton of games, but that was the most exciting a UK team has ever been. I think he and Mike Leach came up with the system together.
November 27th, 2012 at 5:17 PM
also, Rich Brooks retired, presumably because he was almost 70 years old and had recently had a tumor removed.

Yeah, man. Move the ball at will between the 20s and never score, especially after Couch went pro. Putting Jared Lorenzen ahead of a proven Dusty Bonner, all because Lorenzen could “throw the deep ball.” Never, EVER stopping anyone on defense. Good times indeed.
The Andre Woodson team that beat LSU is the, by far, the most exciting team UK has had in a long, LONG time.
