How about we stop talking about this insignificant game and discuss Germany giving up a 4 goal lead. In a way, I’m glad. Let’s struggle in qualifiers so we go to tournament without the favorite tag. That way, when we inevitably lose, people will shrug their shoulder rather than calling us chokers.

I wish he played for Mexico so it would be socially acceptable to hate him.
Also because it would mean a CONCACAF team would have a better chance of doing something meaningful.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I don’t think that’s going to be an issue.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
hooray narcissism!
October 17th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
I watched his post-game interview last night. He doesn’t come across as all that smart. I think he has a learning disorder.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Watch out, Deuce is loose and he’s coming to get ya.
Seriously Clint, give up the rapper image. It’s ridiculous.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Clint has that me against the world thing a lot of the time. I dont think he ever shuts it off. In his mind he’s still out there as a kid playing pickup games and getting shoved around the field by grownups. Just hope he has something left in the tank for the WC.
Good to see Bradley back. He has to play elite for the US to advance anywhere next WC. He links up our back to front and is pretty good at picking his spots to press ahead on attack.

Dude scored two goals last night. Haters gotta hate, I guess.

I don’t follow soccer much. Is that what he is doing?

Been trying for years to finish watching this video. Just can’t do it. It’s too damn awkward.

Historically, yes. From 2007.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Well I meant that he would make Mexico better. He’ll never do anything of consequence with the USMNT.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Kaiser, glad we’re on the same page.

I’ve got no problem with that analogy, Arnold got out because he thought the leadership was incompetent.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
say what you want about him but do a little research. he’s from a dirt poor town in texas and life was not easy for him. he’s got an edge to him and he brings it to the pitch, i really like that. historically, one of team usa’s issues has been intimidation and he does not suffer from that. also, he plays with flare.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
I don’t dislike Clint. At least not to the level of that traitor moleman. Just ribbing him. That’s all.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
He elbowed Craig Bellamy in the head, therefore, Clint Dempsey can fuck off.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
he’s from a dirt poor town in texas
Well, he has that going against him.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
dempsey’s given up the rapper image a long time ago. He llikes rap, goes to concerts etc but he hasn’t been pushing that for a while. In fact, he now has a watch line, I believe and spends his saturday mornings watching cartoons with his kids.
He’s a major sourpuss and never seems happy, but he’s an absolute beast and the best the US has ever produced, so as long as he keeps scoring and gaining respect, it’s all good in my book. Though, that dive late in the game was terrible. IF you want to not like him, do it because he loses the ball when trying to be fancy, and occasionally dives.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
This is awesome.
October 17th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
C’mon, US is the banner waver for World Cup CONCACAF advancement. Has gone further in the World Cup than Mexico has – semifinals!

October 17th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I’d rather have more guys on the team like Dempsey who seem to have chip on there shoulder as opposed to Donovan who comes off as passive.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
JMonk went scrambling to Google to find out what a “CONCACAF team” is.
/ Some soccer thing he’s never heard of
October 17th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Mexico is the Susan Lucci of the World Cup.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
To call Dempsey the best the US has ever produced is a stretch right now.
I know the haters will argue otherwise, but I think Michael Bradley will eventually be the best.
Right now, the “best ever” crown goes to Freidel or Howard.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
It’s Brian McBride and it’s not close. Then it’s Dempsey. Goalkeepers should never be your best ever.
Lee Yashin was the best Russian player ever and Russia largely fucking sucks too.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Haters must be a soccer term.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Nope. Brian Mcbride was fantastic, but he only scored 38 goals in europe and never more than 10 in a season. Dempsey scored 23 last year alone, and is the leading all time goal scorer in the EPL for Fulham. He also won the bronze boot at the confeds cup.
Dempsey’s already scored as mnay goals as mcbride did for the US, and still has many years left. Mcbride was a stud, and is a legend, but he wasn’t better than dempsey.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
It’s Brian McBride and it’s not close. Then it’s Dempsey. Goalkeepers should never be your best ever.
You must not have a liking for midfielders. Claudio Reyna > Brian McBride
October 17th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
I have a soft spot for McBride and loathe Dempsey, I’m exaggerating. I’d actually put Reyna ahead of both of them. I think Dempsey will – when he’s done – be the best we’ve produced.
Reyna’s international career ending the way it did was one of the worst things ever. At least Gooch did typical Gooch shit so that the goal from Reyna’s injury wasn’t the deciding one.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Reyna’s career was very good, and should get credit for doing it when it was very very difficult for Americans, however to me, injuries derailed his career so much that you can’t really make a case for him.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
A case can be made for Friedel, but Howard? Why? he’s played for a mid tier team for just about his entire career, and while he’s very solid back there, he’s not even the best (or even 2nd best) American GK to go to Europe
October 17th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Yeah but it was the best player we’ve produced, not who had the best career. Dempsey’s already probably had the better career.
October 17th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
The US should advance to the World Cup pretty easily even if they lose to Mexico both games. I don’t think they will lose both games to Mexico as they should win or tie at home.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
If that’s the case, then how can you even compare them?
October 17th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Best American Players are probably Brede Hageland and Giuseppe Rossi (*sob). Special shout out to John O’ Brien. He was epic in ’02
October 17th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
We have to count Neven Subotić then.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I am still mad that Subotic picked Serbia over the USA(I get why he did), but he doesn’t even start for them when Vidic is out and it looks like they might not even make the WC unless they improve. He would be a starter for the USMNT easily
October 17th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Captain Robert Hatch. Legend.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Brede isn’t American, he has the option of acquiring a passport, not the same thing. HIs parents worked here when he was born, and by the time he was 2, he was gone. Same with Subotic, he could have gotten one because of his status, but the kid was 11 when he moved here. If anything, Subotic is more German than American
October 17th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
@mancity- In regards to Subotic I agree with you, but I can still wish he played for the US!
October 17th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Still a high chance he is a US international right now if the USSF didn’t throw him under the bus, though.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Absolutely, but it bothers me when folks get that stuff mixed up. The only person to ever really turn his back on the US was Giuseppe Rossi. While I don’t agree with his choice, I understand it. That said, karma took care of him and his knee
October 17th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Subotic didn’t turn his back on the US, no, he turned his back on the USSF though, that’s beyond question. And rightfully so, too.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Bullshit bullshit bullshit. Rossi had already been in the Italian youth setup for three years before the USSF even fucking approached him. Italy took him from a young age, we missed out on him, big difference.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Yes, but I think eventually it would have been more similar to Timmy Chandler. Sorta commit, realize you might have better options, then flip flop. His case was interesting, because there were at least 4 countries he could have played for
October 17th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
It wasn’t even until after United had bought Rossi (five goddamn years after he left America) that we registered an interest with him. Given his family, he probably would still have chosen Italy given the chance, but that was one colossal botched scouting job by us. Parma had him from age twelve when he was playing in New Jersey. It took us five more years to notice.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Who did Tim Ream piss off that he can’t get play anymore? Just because Bolton was relegated? I don’t see the Championship so I have no idea if he is pants or not. Danny Williams impressed last night he dominated in the middle. And Bradley looks like he’s just a different player even from when I saw him in person against Turkey back in May of ’10. Eddie Johnson actually looks like he knows how to play now. Before when he was in MLS he just used pace but had no real technique. He had an excellent goal for the 10 min I watched the Sounders last weekend.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
If Chandler were anywhere near good enough for Germany (he isn’t) he would have already decided. Still can’t believe he’s wavering though considering the young talent Germany have.
I still choose to believe it was Bradley’s decision to leave him off the Gold Cup roster though.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
You missed my point entirely. The others weren’t “American”, the way Rossi is. Therefore, his opting to play for Italy rather than the US can be characterized as turning his back on us. He, unlike the others, still claims himself as American.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
He started the first couple games, then got torched, lost his spot, and hasn’t been able ot regain it. With a new coach at Bolton, he’ll hopefully have a clean slate now.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Nah I get it. The reason I said we had to include Subotic was because of Brede. Neither is American, but technically had the chance to play for us and didn’t.
I just find the anger toward Rossi to be ridiculous. The anger should be at our inept soccer federation in that situation.
Knee injury aside, he still has a much better chance of achieving real success at the national team level with the choice he made. He made the right choice, an unpopular choice, and I don’t think I need any other reasons to hate a guido from Jersey that has played for United.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
ANd one small point: Parma saw him IN ITALY. He went over every summer and played youth set ups. So, it’s not like Parma came to NJ, scouted a u-13 game and scoooped him up. His dad was essentially showing him off for clubs in Italy.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Last thing I remember Ream doing was giving up that penalty to Panama.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Look, I understand the professional choice he made, and it was the right one professionally, but I support the USMNT, so it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. The fact remains, he snubbed/turned his back on the US, the country he claims as his own, the others were in an entirely different situation.
The USSF couldn’t have done a thing to change his mind, even if they tried to cap him at 12 years old. Dude was gonna play for Italia regardless if given the chance. IT was never going to happen for the US.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Yeah his family wanted him to play there, and can anyone really blame him? Clifton had a soccer dynasty at the time though it’s not like he was playing on the rough and tumble mean streets of Rio.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
That’s fair.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Ream wsan’t all that in the Gold Cup either IIRC.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
Yeah Ream got benched for the remainder of the Gold Cup after the Panama game. Lichaj took his spot.
In unrelated news, England getting dominated by the Submarine Screendoor Brigade right now.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
While I don’t watch a fraction of the international soccer as others here I do make an effort to watch the USMNT games. It seems Jurgen prefers defensemen who will not get beat man-to-man. For the bigger games, a defensemen’s distribution and offensive skills are not as important as not getting torched out of place defensively.
I can’t speak to how other nations or the majority premier teams in the world decide their defensemenBut to me that seems how Jurgen decides who to play defense in some of these games. Obviously given our lack of depth in the back, there is likely to be somebody suspect out there most times.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
lewandowski having his way?
October 17th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Well, with a full choice of US players, Klinsmann actually opts for offensive minded fullbakcs in Timmy chandler, cherundolol fabian johnson, and even Fabian Castillo at times. He’s a big believer in the outside backs getting forward and pressing the defense.
Now, against teams where we’re outclassed we have always tended to use more bite in our D, focusing on blocking shots, disrupting plays etc, but thats a product of not being able to keep possession more than anything else
October 17th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
England just couldn’t keep possession and Poland were putting tons of pressure on them. England luck to get a draw.
England just aren’t that good.
October 17th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Now, against teams where we’re outclassed we have always tended to use more bite in our D, focusing on blocking shots, disrupting plays etc, but thats a product of not being able to keep possession more than anything else
Okay this was more to my point. The maturation and hopefully – increased reliability of the former group you listed, is so damn vital to the team. I know some have been tough on the USMNT even being in the qualifying position they were last night, I think they have ignored how much experience he gained in that round from his developmental players. And it’s better to start that development in the last stage as he did. Some people just want to run the 2010 out there in Brazil.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
I dont know ANYONE that wants the 2010 squad run out there. The defense will most likely (hopefully) only have one holdover in Steve Cherundolo. A back 4 of Fabian Johnson, Geoff Cameron, Player X and Steve Cherundolo would be one of, if not the best back 4 the US will have ever played with, and one that will be able to get forward, and defend with bite, provided they have a Danny Williams (whom i personally love) or J Jones in front of the back 4
