San Francisco 49ers 2012 NFL Preview
2012 NFL Previews: Tampa Bay Bucs| Indianapolis Colts | New England Patriots | Seattle Seahawks |Minnesota Vikings | St. Louis Rams |Cleveland Browns | Arizona Cardinals | San Diego Chargers | Atlanta Falcons | Chicago Bears | Oakland Raiders | Carolina Panthers | Cincinnati Bengals | San Francisco 49ers | Philadelphia Eagles |
Last year, San Francisco realized its potential in going from Mike Singletary to Jim Harbaugh. The 49ers were never out of any games in 2011, as the largest loss was by 10 at Baltimore in a game that was tied in the fourth quarter. San Francisco was a few non-fumbles against the Giants away from reaching the Super Bowl in Harbaugh’s first year.
The expectation, after such a leap, is that there will be some fall back the next year. This is certainly supported by the evidence, as teams that take a big jump tend to regress more than normal the following year. In San Francisco’s case, a couple of other factors also make that more likely. First, they were driven by their defense, and defenses tend to be more variable from year to year. Second, they had an absurdly low offensive turnover rate, and were +28 overall in turnover margin. Some drop back in those categories and the 49ers have a few fewer losses.
However, I do feel that this San Francisco team is likely to be just as competitive this year, even if 13 wins is not likely because plenty has to go right for any team to win 13 games. First, we can ask whether big leaps in a new coach’s first year matter in a different way than other big leaps.
Here are the results for all seasons since 1978 where a team had a losing record, improved their wins by at least 4 games, and finished with a non-losing record.
- Big Leap in Coach’s First Year: 27 cases, 4.1 wins prior year, 9.7 wins in breakout year, 8.3 wins the following year.
- Big Leap in all other cases: 74 cases, 5.2 wins prior year, 10.6 wins in breakout year, 8.3 wins the following year.
While the win totals were the same in the year after the breakout, the change was not. The coaches who had a breakout in their first season had relatively worse teams the year before, and did not win as many games in the breakout. As a result, they only experienced a 25% decline in their average wins relative to the prior year’s leap. (44% for all others).
You could make a case that San Francisco was a talented team in need of a good coach, and that the leap wouldn’t have been as pronounced but for the difference between Harbaugh and the erratic Singletary. The 49ers were more like an average team waiting for an infusion of coaching, and not a truly bad team that came out of nowhere (i.e., the 2008 Dolphins with Sparano). While I expect some decline from the 49ers, I think that is more in the 9-11 win range and contending for a division title and in the hunt for a bye again.
The 49ers set a record last year for rush defense in terms of touchdowns allowed, giving up only 3 scores on the ground all year. When we look at other teams with dominant rush defenses (3.6 ypc or less, fewer than 6 touchdowns allowed), they did tend to hold their value, with some notable exceptions. The average the next year was still a salty 3.8 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns allowed. The recent Ravens teams, Steelers teams, Buddy Ryan-influenced teams and the 49ers of the late 90′s dominate the list. I think that this 49ers team will still continue to be very difficult to run on, with Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, Navorro Bowman and company, and they will never be out of games as a result. Teams will not be able to ice games easily against the 49ers.
So I expect this team to be similar to the 1990′s Chiefs. Sprinkle some 13 win years in amongst years with 9, 10, or 11 wins, with luck determining specific years. They won’t have the same turnover margin, but it will still be above average, and the 49ers aren’t going away any time soon.

Minimum 8-peat.
September 3rd, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Giving up just 3 rush TDs is flat out incredible.
They’re too well coached to dip much. Guessing they go 11-5.

Just watched the Taken 2 trailer. Sweet action goodness
I enjoyed the first one, but didn’t think it warranted a second. Needs less happy ending and more rape. I’ll wait for that to come out in Redbox. Hard to feel too ripped off when you only spend a dollar.

Oh i won’t pay to see it in the theater. I just wait til it is on TV.

Yea, the only two movies coming out soon that I’ll pay to see in theaters is Bond in November and Hobbit in December. There was a 3rd one I saw advertised during the batman movie that I remember thinking looked good, but I can’t remember what it was called or what it was about. Something tells me I won’t be going to see that one anytime soon.

Meth did you get a tornado this afternoon? News here was saying Tornado warning in DE.

Oh, and fuck the forty whiners.

Somebody came in saying something about it, but I didn’t hear nothing. If we do get one I hope to god it nails this motherfucker. I don’t feel like being here.
September 3rd, 2012 at 4:41 PM
I just checked they don’t have anything up on it. When the girl came in talking about I made the classic simultaneous farting noise with meat cranking motion.
September 3rd, 2012 at 4:50 PM
I’ve seen a couple of tornados here and in Idaho, and they are no joke. My parents neighborhood got hit by one in TX a few years back, and it picked the roof off one of their neighbors houses and dropped it in the middle of the street.
September 3rd, 2012 at 4:50 PM
Flash flooding but what’s new on that? All it’s fucking done here for 2 weeks is rain.
September 3rd, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Yea I can’t remember when, but a few years one nailed Newark and flipped one of the air national guard planes. Wasn’t a C-5, it was a smaller one but still. A fucking plane. Then a very little quick one hit down the road 2 years ago and took a little siding and like 10 shingles off 2-3 houses.
September 3rd, 2012 at 4:54 PM
We should’ve called that one the borenado.

September 3rd, 2012 at 5:17 PM
But anyways I was going to see how far you were from there. Next month my brother might come down to visit and we were going to go to White Clay Creek to do some trout fishing. If you weren’t too far from there I was going to extend an invitation.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:21 PM
Depends on what day next month. I have a meeting in Dallas for a week and my brother is supposed to come for another week.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:25 PM
Nice post, Lisk. Seems like every media outlet is intensely focused on this mean reversion. As someone who’s watched the 49ers closely, I believe it’s difficult to ascertain the true “mean” based on the Singletary years – he was without question the worst head coach in the history of the league. Zero concept of Xs and Os, just rah-rah blather – it was incredibly painful to watch him use all his timeouts before half of the first (or third) quarter was over.
Harbaugh is possibly the exact opposite of Singletary – he is almost insanely focused on detail and minutiae. I’m not thrilled about keeping Moss – would rather have seen one more of the rookies kept around as I am skeptical of his impact based on what we saw in 2010. Looks like AJ Jenkins won’t even be active this season.
I’m predicting 10-6 and being a tough out in the postseason. Schedule is brutal though. Brutal – Rodgers, Brees, Stafford, Brady and Eli all on the list.
Oh, and don’t forget Russell Wilson twice – apparently he is already the best player in the NFL, according to everyone everywhere. Don’t remember those pundits suggesting he be a first round pick back in April, but now apparently he is clearly better than Tannehill and Griffin. Will likely overtake Luck after the first game.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:32 PM
Half-cocked prediction? If Moss stays healthy I think he’ll make an impact. I think he’s found that Jerry Rice syring..err fountain of youth.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:32 PM
Depends on what day next month.
In all honesty I haven’t even figured out when to have him come down. First deer season is 7th-15th. The book says they stock that creek again mid-October, I need to call them and figure out when it is exactly they’re stocking because my brother sucks at fishing and needs to have as many fish in there as possible. So it’d probably be sometime between the 16th and end of October. How far is that for you?
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:33 PM
I think he’s found that Jerry Rice syring..err fountain of youth.
Well played.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:35 PM
it’s a little over an hour for me. I know my brother’s coming in the last week of the month. let me know when you know a date for sure, and I’ll see. I haven’t fished for a couple years, so I’d be pretty happy to get out again.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:48 PM
All seriousness I do think Moss will be alright. He’s never relied on quickness per se – more top end speed. If you watch his gait it’s closer to Usain Bolt’s Secretariat-like strides than shorter, choppier steps that I think age would impact more. The rules favor receivers more than ever these days and what CB do you really fear in that division? Harbaugh is going to want to get him touches and TD’s to keep him happy and keep defenses from overly keying on the running game. I think the speedbump to 1,000 yards and 10 TD’s is the guy getting him the ball…which is admittedly an oil pan scraping speedbump if there ever was one.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:53 PM
I haven’t fished for a couple years, so I’d be pretty happy to get out again.
It’s a good place to fish. I think the PA side of it is also called White Clay Creek State Park, because they connect. And you can actually see PA from the entrance. And actually come to think of it, one of the guys I was fishing with from PA there I believe said you have to go into Delaware to reach the PA side of it (the stocked creek, not the whole park). I’m actually surprised it’s only an hour from you. That’s about what it is for me. If I leave bright and early and don’t hit too much traffic I think I can get there in an hour give or take a few minutes.
September 3rd, 2012 at 5:54 PM
I didn’t know these exist.
Good write-up Lisk. I’m glad this wasn’t another fly-by REGRESSION TO THE MEAN!!!! post, of which I’ve read at least three that say the same goddamn thing this offseason. I definitely see a regression coming, but still think they could pull out a 10-win season.
I agree w/Chilly above – it is hard to demonstrate the detrimental effects that Mike Singletary had on this football team. That guy was an utter abomination. Easily takes his rightful place among head coach shittery alongside Rich Kotite, Bruce Coslet and Raheem Morris.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:01 PM
I’m guessing 10-6, lose in wild card round.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:09 PM
His name is Patrick Peterson
Capt. Comeback doesn’t give two shits about Moss’ or any other player’s happiness. He is not a stats guy he is a wins guy. If he cared about stats even a little Andrew Luck would probably grabbed the Heisman in 2010. Moss will get a few deep balls a game just to keep the safety from clogging the middle on Vernon Davis and to help the running game, that’s it. If he bitches or becomes a distraction in any way Harbaugh will cut him in a cocaine heartbeat.

Meth keep me in the loop. It might be more than an hour, I’ll look into it. No worries though. If I’m free, I’ll probably join you.
September 3rd, 2012 at 6:41 PM
Will do Smallie. Just checked on non-resident licenses, you’d be looking at 18 or 19 bucks depending on where you got it at. That includes the trout stamp, and it’s a 7 day pass. Unless you plan on fishing in Delaware again between then and January I wouldn’t pay the extra 8 bucks for the full license, because that’s all the longer this years license is good for. I also looked into the dates a little more. Can’t find exactly which day they’re stocking, but I’ll ask when I go in there to pick up my hunting license tomorrow. After that, I gotta wait for fuckhead to get a day off so he can go get a new phone so I can actually get ahold of him and see if he wants to come down, and we’ll go from there.

I did finish one, minus looking up the names of 3 actors/authors to books/movies I’d never heard of. It was epee, and the fruit was sloe. I said screw it and looked it up.

Plus i have a huge book of tough crosswords.
For me it seems..Tough crossword=just about any crossword. I never figured out how to do the sodokus, but I do the ones out of the paper, too. Waste 75 cents a day on that thing just to look for another job, unscramble four words and have a crossword puzzle insult the shit out of my intelligence.
September 3rd, 2012 at 9:16 PM
Love sudoku, would only get the student newspaper to do it in class. If I finished early would try to do the crossword for a little but count me as well in the camp of always cheats at crossword puzzles
September 3rd, 2012 at 9:17 PM
Newspaper classifieds are nearly worthless nowadays for job hunting. Most postings are online. You’ll get a few in the paper but not many and not usually the good ones. Sudokus aren’t all that hard once you start doing them. they are just another form of logic problems.
Back to jobs, go on indeed.com . Its like a google for jobs. That site collects all kinds of job postings from various sites so you don’t have to visit multiple sites
September 3rd, 2012 at 9:18 PM

Yeah, once you get used to them they tend to get easier. I like them to something quick and pass 5-10 minutes when I get bored.

My in-laws and parents do the crosswords and I never was into them. Then when I had kids I realized they are perfect b/c kids are constantly interrupting you and you can do them in small doses. I started the day my first son was born during all the sitting and waiting. Once I did a Times Sunday I pretty much quit, which was about a year later.
If you havent done them, they are easy on MON and get harder each day.

September 3rd, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Gyro. Are those the fried tortilla kinda deals with the meat/cheese and whatever else in the middle?
September 3rd, 2012 at 9:32 PM
There is about 5% of words in a crossword you just have to learn b/c they crop up time to time. Once you learn them shit gets much easier.
Treva (famous fountain in Italy)
Aja (Steely Dan album)
What I did was sit there are learn every word I didn’t know and then within a month you can dominate. That said, I really didn’t do much of them on FRI or SAT as those two are hard as balls and littered with minutae from the olden days. A THUR crossword and the SUN crossword are the two definitive tests IMO. FRI and SAT are for fanatics.
September 3rd, 2012 at 9:33 PM
Gyro is some salted lamb meat on a pita with lettuce, tomato and a yogurt sauce with some salt and pepper.

Says Tribune. Had to look up the last 3. So I got everything except maybe 7 or 8 of them without assistance.

I’m sorry to add this, but last week I spoke with a friend whose ministry dealt with folk who had graduated from the system. Her take was “a trade is the best way to go”. Carpentry, electrical, HVAC.

SROD my friend emailed me and seemed fairly positive about his situation despite his 1/3 chances due to early detection. So thanks for the comments the other night I was in a pretty bad place.

SROD,
There was a carpentry apprentice program but it was a 45 minute drive away. Not having my own car is an issue. Im calling a ton of restaurants tomorrow to see if they are hiring. I did food service for many years so i might as well jump back in

A.P. you good with tools at all. I installed garage doors for my father and I am certain anybody that is somewhat handy and understands basic shit like things being level and some other stuff could run their own business, and the pool of people looking for garage doors and openers installed or fixed is limitless. Nobody gets into b.c most people are deathly afraid of getting killed by the springs but its not too bad. Sorry I am not trying to be a smartass but kinda adding on to SRODs comment

Georgia Tech’s triple option offense is a joke. Try playing real football, you peckerheads

My brother and I went to a concert one time and went early to see the city. Reading, PA. That place is garbage, but the point of this story is we went to this restaurant. I believe it’s a somewhat national chain, I’ll think of the name in a minute. But it was the first time we’d ever been to a restaurant that automatically includes gratuity in your bill. We didn’t realize it, and when we went to tip the waitress I shit you not she had this shocked looked on her face and said, “Really?!” My brother mentioned how shocked she was but we didn’t think much of it. Well he decided to look at the receipt after we were done and realized our mishap. He said “Those motherfuckers! For a tip like that she should’ve taken us in the back and sucked us off!”

I hate places that do that. No incentive for wait staff to make an effort.
Fellas, I’m gonna roll, but we are two days away from pro football. Let’s get this thang started.

I thought it was bigger than that. It was a good place, and the service was good, just not $30 dollars good.

I wasn’t even old enough to drink then, so the Bar in Peanut Bar had no meaning to me at the time.
