Jeremy Lin & the Houston Rockets Are Way Too Young For Anyone to Talk Playoffs

Jeremy Lin is a Houston Rocket. The Knicks didn’t match Houston’s offer sheet, and the team’s most popular player is gone. The question everyone’s asking – will Lin be able to duplicate his 18-7 averages in New York as a starter on the Rockets and get Houston to the playoffs?
Answers: Probably not immediately and definitely no.
Let’s first look at what he left. A team with two Olympians (Melo and Chandler) and Amare Stoudemire. Even though Amare isn’t what he once was, he’s still a better scoring option (especially in the pick-and-roll) than anything Lin will have in the Houston frontcourt.
Take a look at Houston’s roster. There’s one player currently on it over the age of 30 (Earl Boykins, who may not even make the team). The Rockets are brimming with young talent – four rookies (Terrence Jones, Jeremy Lamb, Royce White and 7-footer Donatas Motiejunas) are playing excellent so far in the Vegas Summer League and figure to be part of the 9-man rotation – but good luck finding anyone with relevant playoff experience. Kevin Martin played six playoff games in 2006. Lin and many others on the Rockets’ roster were teenagers in high school at the time.
The Rockets, as presently constructed, are headed back to the lottery. They’re just too young. (Silver lining: They’ll have two lottery picks – their own plus Toronto’s in the Kyle Lowry deal.)
Two large questions loom, though:
* What does Dwight Howard think of the Lin acquisition? They’d make a beautiful pick-and-roll marriage. What would Howard cost the Rockets?
* What happens with Omer Asik, the Bulls center who Houston is pursuing? He’s only started two games and averaged just 3.1 ppg and 5.3 rpg last year in Chicago, but he’d be a step up in the middle of the Rockets.
If I had to guess the Rockets starting lineup right now, I’d go with (current age in parens):
PG – Lin (23)
SG – Kevin Martin (29)
SF – Jeremy Lamb (20)
PF – Patrick Patterson (23)
C – Motiejunas (21)
That’s got to be one of the youngest teams in the league. Even if you want Lamb to come off the bench, who is starting at SF, 23-year-old Chandler Parsons? I’m cool with making Motiejunas a reserve, too. Other options at center? Not-ready players like Jerome Jordan (25) and Greg Smith (21). Royce White and Terrence Jones both will figure prominently this season in some capacity, and the player I’d look for as a sleeper is Jon Leuer, a 6-foot-10 shooter from Wisconsin. He could be next year’s Steve Novak.
[UPDATE: About eight hours after this post went up, Houston waived Jordan and Leuer. Guess I'll have to look harder for that sleeper.]

Yeesh. 2nd worst starting 5 in the league (behind Charlotte).

Couple things here. His hands are terrible so his offensive potential is extremely limited because he can’t hold on to the ball. Putbacks are about all you’re going to get and those are limited. Defensively, you’ll have to see how he continues his development without Tom Thibodeau.
The Rockets still have not formally submitted this offer sheet the last I checked.

Weren’t the Cavs your 8th seed in the East?
July 18th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
So I’m guessing that, now they’ve landed Lin, the Rockets will overtake the Mavs for “biggest dumpster fire in the NBA” title.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
*head desk*
Leuer: 46 games, attemped nine 3′s.
Novak: 54 games, attemped 282.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Again, JMac, you or anyone else shouldn’t give a damn what Dwight Howard thinks or wants. Quit with this fucking nonsense.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
i believe – not certain – you can only have 1 offer sheet out at a time, and Houston’s focus was clearly Lin (for more than hoops, obvs). I’d expect Asik thing to pop this wknd.
can the Bulls really keep Asik and then expect to keep Taj Gibson?
July 18th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
What kind of offense does HOU run? It seems they’d be better off with a dual combo guard/motion style than trying to have Lin be a traditional 1.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
What does Dwight Howard think of the Lin acquisition?
The past 18 mos indicate he does very little thinking.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
You check his stats at Wisconsin as a senior?
Averaged 4.3 3-pt attempts per game. Shot 37 percent.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Scott Howson sucks.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
WOOF!
Granted to be fair, they’d have more playoff experience if Lin weren’t chickenshit.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
wellwellwell…I just got a “Flirt Live with Asian Ladies” ad at the top of the page.

Are you talking about the same person?

Whoops — just disregard that link.

Earl Boykins
MAC legend. I bet my bankroll on that EMU-Duke NCAA game that one year. I think that was the most money I ever won on a game, and that was almost 15 years ago.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Forget offense, that is going to be one of the worst defense teams in the league. Lin wasn’t very good on D, Kevin Martin is just terrible and I wouldn’t count on any of those young bigs. They may figure out a way to score, but good luck to McHale getting them to hold teams under 100.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
No. Hopefully GarPax lets Asik walk away. Would rather have Taj since the Bulls have $50M+ invested in Joakim Noah, a guy with a contract that is starting to look like a bargain after what Lopez got.
I don’t know how NBA RFAs work. Do the Bulls get compensation picks if they don’t match?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Have you watched Wisconsin play recently? That’s their offense. Kill the clock and chuck up a 3. Still…besides the point. Leuer’s bread and butter is a 12-18ft jumper especially on the baseline. Novak’s is shooting 3′s…and making them in the NBA at a higher rate than a guy who shot 37% in college.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Grizz: Yes.
Good Q. Lin drive and kick to Lamb/Lee? Lin Pick and roll with Royce White? Great question nobody knows the answer to.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
We gonna get a clippers post? They had a very interesting offseason. Odom, Hill,Jamal Crawford, Billups coming back

July 18th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
I don’t know how NBA RFAs work. Do the Bulls get compensation picks if they don’t match?
No. You just lose the player. Like the Knicks just losing Lin to HOU for not matching: there’s nothing coming back the other way.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
perfect to play with Lin. drive and kick.
12-18 footers, 3-pointers, as i said, a sleeper next year. Obviously wont make 50% of 3′s like Novak, but i do see him blowing up.
feel free to rip that if it doesn’t happen.
i’ll wait for your (not you, specifically, MU) longshot sleeper predictions.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Blake developing a jump sh…..oh nevermind
July 18th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Or Leuer could join the other long line of Wisconsin big men who do very little or are stuck in the d-league (stiemsma, butch, etc)

If I was a Rockets’ fan, I’d be mildly pissed that we’ve entered a “5-year plan”-style regime. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for Howard to show up and make everything right. If that truly is their plan, God bless ‘em.
“Jo, we’re gonna lose, and we’re gonna lose big.”
July 18th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Jeremy Lin will be second to Larry Brown (Raiders CB/Dallas Super Bowl MVP) for turning a small sample size into a lucrative contract and I predict will perform the same way.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
I think you named all two unless you’re going back to Paul Grant
July 18th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Is ANYBODY expecting the Rockets to even sniff the playoffs with this roster (unless a Howard trade is consummated)? Even with Asik I can’t imagine even Morey and Alexander think this is anything close to a playoff team…
July 18th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
You just lose the player. Like the Knicks just losing Lin to HOU for not matching: there’s nothing coming back the other way.
And in Lin ans Asik’s cases you do get the satisfaction in knowing you didn’t overpay for an overated guard and a stiff center.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
I haven’t posted today and the site is telling me to slow down.
Also relevant to this duscussion – Jeremy Lin is not THAT good. He’s not bad, but he’s not swinging the fortunes of New York or Houston in a meaningful way, in my view.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Dude, this is Texas. No way they can get married in this state.
Truthfully, I agree with most of the conclusions in this post. However, who knows what the mid-season trade deadline would bring them if they realized Howard was off the table for them?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Stiemsma was also just a rookie, an undrafted one at that. He’ll probably never be good, but he’s got some staying power.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
I’ve seen a lot of Leuer over the past few years. Some would say too much. “Blowing up” is just hard to see with him. I think he will be an effective bench player, but Novaksanity or whatever your Knicks fans call it might be a stretch.
As for sleepers… as a Bucks homer I’ll throw out Tobias Harris.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
They’ve done some good things and taken reasonable gambles with Odom and Hill. Hate the Jamal Crawford signing though. I don’t think he’s ever made a team better.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
what do you know about coaching?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
plus, there’s the part about Lin being shitty.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
LOVE the clips
Still a distant 4th in the West, at best
July 18th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Tobias should’ve stayed in school another year. Great body, just looked overwhelmed when he was on the court in the few games I saw him play.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
That, too. This post is a giant NO SHIT.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Morey approached this offseason from an angle not usually seen and for that he gets credit. He did what people usually do in the NFL, get as many 1st rd. picks as possible so he could trade up into the top 5. Didn’t work but it’s a good idea. I don’t remember any GM doing that before. But obviously they have excellent scouts because because wherever they draft they get players who at least contribute. And it’s encouraging that all their players they drafted are doing well in Las Vegas (for whatever that’s worth). Aaron Brooks did well there and turned into a pretty decent player.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Agreed, but I’m glad he’s on the Bucks. He’s a talent. Maybe this year is too soon (just turned 20), but he’ll eventually make a huge leap.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
I have never been a fan of this. Talent matters, not age.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Upside: Lin’s jersey will fly off the shelf like a flock of unruly pigeons.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Is ANYBODY expecting the Rockets to even sniff the playoffs with this roster (unless a Howard trade is consummated)? Even with Asik I can’t imagine even Morey and Alexander think this is anything close to a playoff team…
No, but that’s got little to do with the roster and more to do with the depth in the West. They might have contended for the 8th seed in the East, but in the WC, they’re with Phoenix and New Orleans at the bottom.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Why is everyone knocking Lin for skipping the playoffs? Would you bust your ass for Carmelo? Didn’t think so.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
I thought Lin played for the Knicks?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
I’d like the Lin apologists to get on record and tell me what he’ll do as a full-time starter (which I don’t believe he is).
July 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
This is quite the confusing statement based on what I’ve been reading on here for the past few months. Seems like someone is attempting pre emptive rationalization on their Linsanity hype for the time April arrives and Lin is leading the league in turnovers and the Rockets aren’t in the playoffs.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
If I wanted to earn respect among my peers, yes I would.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Rockets probably do miss the playoffs, and I refuse to buy into Lin yet (all this Knick fan apoplexy will be really funny when Lin is lighting it up for the Austin Toros in 2013), but that team isn’t really any younger than the Thunder last year?
It takes experience (not age) to win a championship, but good young players can make the playoffs. Crappy young players, not so much.
I agree with most of your post, except the premise and reasoning… where the hell was anyone talking about playoffs with Lin/Houston?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Who knew that Marshawn Lynch had to ability to avoid contact?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
probably hit .400 and throw for 51 td’s.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
This. Young Jason is just building in excuses for Lin’s inevitable “meh-ness” so his evaluation of his talents can not be wrong. Jeremy’s still good – he’s not playing with two Olympians any more!
The conclusions that need to be drawn are that i) Carmelo didn’t say anything inaccurate, and ii) the Knicks are dumb for not bringing back Lin.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Is that all?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
hit .700 and toss a no-no?
It’s an improvement.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I’m not a Lin apologist, but of course I’ll be rooting for him. I’m expecting maybe 15 ppg, 6 apg 41% shooting. Too high? Too low?
July 18th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Let’s see:
-Sit out the playoff series you’re gonna lose anyway to make sure the injury is okay and you get your payday
-Bust your ass so Carmelo and JR Smith don’t blast you to reporters, even though this risk reinjuring yourself. Please note that Carmelo already hates you and is a fat little playoff-sucking team cancer.
This is a not a difficult decision.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Though the statement seems to be a contradiction, I get the point (I think). Nothing written is necessarily wrong, but it’s based on a premise I don’t think anyone is hawking (Rockets to the playoffs), and the reasoning (they’re young) is too generalized – talent is most important, not necessarily age.
I think the evaluations of roster / talent make sense though.
July 18th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Exactly what you said.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I wonder how many Bulls hated Michael Jordan, but played hard with him because they had self-respect, commitment to their teammates and organizations, and did not want to disappoint their fans.
If this is Lin’s thinking, I’d never want to step on a court with him ever. Unbelievably selfish.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
oh ok, so from your past 2 posts I’ve learned that Melo is the coach of the Knicks that Lin would be crazy to play for, and….Lin’s job is that of a prognosticator and not a player. He gets to decide to sit out of a playoff series based on his prognostications. Brilliant.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Gotta keep in mind, this isn’t a vet who had millions packed away. Granted he had a Harvard degree to fall back on, but man that’s tough to ask a kid who was basically living on 15 day contracts to pass up a payday to possibly be set for life.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Lin in Houston’s offense next year will avg 18 pts, 7.5assists, and 4 rebounds a game. I’d put money he finishes among the top 12 in PER among point guards next year.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
He had a contract for the rest of the year at that point. If you’ve deemed yourself at 85%, then at that point you’re dealing more with pain and discomfort than a chance that you’re going to tear the meniscus again.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
If I had any idea who you are, but you might want to bookmark this to use in your ‘insanity’ plea in case you ever kill anyone.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Is their a ZIPS for NBA players the way there is one for baseball? I’d like to see what they think about what Lin is predicted to do.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Stop telling Lin how to spend his money or handle his injuries. It’s a business first.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
*there
July 18th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
It’s called SCHOENE.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
I wonder what it projects for someone like Goran Dragic or Kyle Lowry. Certainly Lowry would be higher than Lin, I would think. But Dragic? I dunno.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
I remember when someone argued with me that Lin was better than Rondo because he had a higher ranking amongst PG’s in PER than Rondo.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Probably Lowery > Dragic > Lin.
More of a sample size with the first two, so there would be more regression with Lin.
Houston is betting on him outperforming his projection.
July 18th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
As mostly a lurker, I’ve read enough of your posts to understand that you’re not really a basketball guy.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Actually, they have 5…Scotty Machado…and he’ll be starting at PG over Lin before the All-Star break.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
That’s definitely not the argument I am making. Rondo is far the better player. I am simply suggesting that Lin will be an avg PG who will look slightly better than average in PER (not that PER is a be-all and end-all statistical measure).
On a young team, with no star, with Houston’s offensive sets, and no one competing with Lin for minutes, he’s going to put up decent counting numbers (points, rebounds, assists). Whether he proves efficient at doing so will determining how much he lives up to the contract Houston has given him.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Not telling Lin anything, especially about how to spend his money.. Just pointing out a fact: when the chips were down he cared about his pain more than the team’s success.
I’d be interested to see the reaction if Carmelo Anthony had sat out a playoff series @ 85%.
July 18th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
I think you’re getting a little carried away with your Machado love. Bold prediction, though.
July 18th, 2012 at 5:42 PM
Jon Leuer waived for cap room. Good stuff. This is why I keep clicking.
July 18th, 2012 at 6:00 PM
The idea that Kevin Martin will be in the starting lineup and Chandler Parsons won’t proves that JMac isn’t even much of a basketball fan. Chandler Fucking Parsons was probably the best player on the Rockets this past year. Unless he gets traded in a D. Howard or Bynum deal, he’s the starter at SF. Idiot.
July 18th, 2012 at 6:03 PM
And Jerome Jordan isn’t exactly “another option” seeing as how they cut him. Don’t let facts get in your way, though.
