Cam Newton Autograph Anger is Silly, Especially When You Consider Tim Tebow Charged $225
Cam Newton charged fans $125 for his autograph recently in North Carolina. Columnist Scott Fowler was outraged!
Newton has done almost everything right in Charlotte since he arrived. This, though, is a false step.
For some reason, it feels different to me when Newton is charging for autographs in Alabama. That was from a different time in his life. That’s like Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith going back to Dallas to charge for autographs (which they do).
In Charlotte, though? Newton shouldn’t charge for autographs in his current hometown. That’s part of just being part of the community.
[Pause to allow you to laugh.]
[Are you still laughing at the bolded part? I am.]
The temerity of the No. 1 pick and Rookie of the Year! Well, what would Mr. Fowler think of demigod Tim Tebow? According to this link (found by ESPN’s Jemele Hill), Tebow went back to Florida and charged a whopping $225 for an autograph – and you had to pay $50 more if you wanted something Bible-related. Where’s the outrage?
Before the draft, it was his smile. Now it’s the fact that he’s charging from his autograph – a practice virtually every athlete does. Man, people love to hate Cam Newton.

I’m mad that there are people who have $275 to spend on a shitty quarterback scribbling down some bullshit on a football
July 13th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
More power to Cam if some rummy’s stupid enough to drop 250 bones on his signature.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
sounds like Scott Fowler is pissed he couldn’t get a free autograph and sell it on ebay, like nearly every adult who goes to these things does.
what an asshole.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
i wouldn’t wait for a free autograph let alone pay money for one. People are stupid to pay that much money for one but the athletes are just as big a scumbag to do it. Gotta pacify the agents and mooching yes-men somehow
July 13th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
grown men asking an athlete or celebrity for an autograph is completely silly. I just don’t understand the upside of having someone else’s name scribbled on a piece of paper or hat or whatever.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Get fucked. I don’t understand grown men paying money for autographs of current players. If the guy was your hero as a kid, that’s cool, but I’m 30 fucking years old. Why do I want a 22 year old’s autograph?
July 13th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Considering most of the people who want autographs do so in order to re-sell them I have no problem with the athlete making a cut
July 13th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
I’m convinced I had this thought first. Fuck you, Billy Wagner.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Tebow is white. Newton is not.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
When you’re a kid, autographs are great and worth waiting for. As an adult, I would only get someone’s autograph if the opportunity fell in my lap and I actually thought to ask.

This should be engraved on a pillow or something.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
I think I’d rather have a picture over an autograph. But even then, I can’t see myself approaching someone at a restaurant or something like that for one. I hate bugging people like that. Now, if it’s a meet and greet sort of thing, that’s different.
Here’s one for you guys. Let’s say you have a chance to meet your childhood hero. Do you go through with it? I don’t think I could. If I caught Montana on a bad day or something, that would be brutal.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Do people paying for these autographs realize that they’ll never see that money again? It’s not an investment in any real way.
The only thing dumber than directly paying an athlete for an autograph is buying an autograph on a secondary market.

i had an anology yesterday of jesus running thru a WWF crowd to wreck something along the lines of the money changing bible story…applies here as well.
i dont know who’s pulling tebow’s strings, but his christian propaganda’s hypocrisy is getting a little obvious these days.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
The sooner Tebow goes away the better it will be for everybody.
Oh and jck gets a +1 for his comments in this thread.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Speaking of not being in awe of an athlete, ran into Dunta Robinson at a local sports bar during the Euros. Thought about telling him that he is a terrible corner and then take off running. It’s not like he has the foot speed to catch me.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Did it once. Sat next to Jon Voight on a flight out of LAX. Just a genuinely nice guy, and he told great stories about his experiences making the “Ali” movie with Will Smith.
No, I didn’t dare ask about his daughter.
In hindsight, I don’t know where the ticket stub is, so why bother the guy for something I didn’t keep?

That’s another cool thing about Bill Russel. Wouldn’t sign ‘em. Said he’d be happy to shake someone’s hand a have a quick word, but no autographs. Completely agree.
/whoops. forgot to put in a nickel so this shitty server would work
July 13th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Can a celebrity come out and just say “Look I’ll pose for a picture, shake your hand but I will never sign autographs it’s fucking stupid and I just can’t rationally support such a foolish endeavour”
Scott Fowler is a moron whose cunty slagness is matched by his slaggy cuntness.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
I’m actually one of the few here who considers himself christian and/or religious and I think Tebow just doesn’t actually know how to do things properly. He’s got some people in his ear who want to suck all the money out of him that the can and they will gladly exploit his faith for the almighty dollar.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
i have nothing against you personally, but if you did this, and he jacked you in the face, id have said “goebbels had it coming.”
July 13th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
When I was a kid I used to mail cards to teams asking for autographs.
Only one I got back?
Mario Lemieux.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Did this once as well. Was at Jim Ross’s restaurant in Oklahoma one time and he came around asking everyone how the food was and such. Struck up a conversation with him about the memorbilia on the walls and such, and it just kind of went from there. Bet we spent 15-20 minutes talking about wrestling. Pretty cool experience.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
The sooner Tebow goes away the better it will be for everybody.
I am legitimately excited for the first Sanchez 4 INT game.

Steve Martin gives out card to everyone who asks for an autograph or a picture. It says something like “You met Steve Martin today. He was incredibly gracious.”
July 13th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Jason… did you read the article at all? It’s not nearly as outraged as you pretend it is. This post reeks of manufactured opinion, making a story where there wasn’t one. If you had quoted the 3rd and 4th paragraphs, and didn’t skip to the end, without any of the previous context, it wouldn’t have had nearly the artificial (read: page view) effect you generated.
In other words… this is the typical kind of post from you I don’t like… placing context in someone’s mouth, defending someone who doesn’t need defending. At least you only juxtaposed race, rather than directly questioning its role.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Nice. I did that too. Got a handful back….the best one was John Elway.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
This is way better than an autograph. When a famous person takes the time to act humane to a stranger, that little effort goes a long way.

But I bet he was your favorite player because of that (as if all you ‘burghers were running around in Ronnie Francis sweaters otherwise).
July 13th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
No, I am not commenting too quickly, but thanks for noticing.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
The longer Tebow is in the NFL as a backup, the bigger the delay for when Tebow becomes a politician.

Spencer – posted this in the last post, but i’m going to smash the new driver/fairway/hybrid offerings on the market tomorrow. Should be quite fun. Probably won’t buy a new driver yet (waiting to try Anser and 913 later this year), but i have my eyes on some fairway woods and rescues for sure.

Topps’ “Legends of the Kentucky Derby” series?
July 13th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Absolutely. And the thing was, he did it to every table, and stuck around for a bit if you wanted to talk to him. The place wasn’t that busy that night, so it’s not like he was there for hours. And you could tell it wasn’t forced. He was just a genuinely nice person.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
If a grown ass person is willing to pay that type of dough then I’d charge them too. However, I would not charge children for my autograph. Also, what this high horsed dip shit fails to realize is that it is CAM’s aunagraph and if he doesn’t want to sign at all he don’t have to. 12 MILLION YA HONOR! 12 MILLLLLYIN!
July 13th, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Serious question for you guys: I have family in Akron, and some of them live about 3 minutes from LBJ’s high school, Saint V’s. Long story short, I got one of his high school basketball teams official t-shirt that has the roster and numbers of the players on the back along with the state titles. Is it worth getting signed by Lebron? Figured it would be worth at least getting signed as I wouldn’t lose money if I had to do a pay-for-the-signing thing.
July 13th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Read the post… that’s a footnote that he doesn’t really like it. He spends a lot more time acknowledging the free autographs to kids. I think he’s wrong, but I’d hardly call it ‘outrage’. McTibble had the outrage.

The other thing that kills me are those idiots that compile the “worst celebrities to get autographs from” lists. What if you caught them on a bad day? What if you look like some asshat from TMZ when you ask for one and not really a fan?

I was in college and Wrestlemania rolled through town. We were out drinking on a Thursday night at our usual spot and who rolls in? Undertaker and Brian Knobs. Everybody hounded Undertaker and Knobs bellied up to the bar and we chatted and laughed at Undertaker not even being able to get near a bar to order a beer. I still remember that, I’d have lost an autograph before I even left the bar that night.

A good friend of mine was a huge Dan Marino fan. He worked his way up in sports business. One day, he was working with a HOF athlete who said he knew that my friend loved Marino, that Marino was in town, and would he like to go meet him. They go to a hotel, all have a drink. My friend brought a football he had in his office for Marino to sign. Marino goes, let’s go out and play catch.

I got to belly up to the bar with Mershawn Lynch, Jason Peters and a couple other Bills a few years back when they were in Fayetteville for something. they were taking shots of Patron at 6:00 and were real cool. I sat there and bs’d with them for a couple minutes.
July 13th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
About 7-10 years ago when the Astros were good and had a few known names, there would be crowds at their hotels and in the bars when they returned after the game. They would mingle, sign autos, etc. I asked Berkman and Bagwell once why they don’t sign much and the response was- people sell them. They will sign but personalize it and I witnessed a few times people would get mad because they personalized the sign.
July 13th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Completely absurd.
Love the logic of, hey Tebow charged this amount of $ so that means its fine if Cam does it for this amount.
