DEA Drug Raid at TCU Results in the Arrest of 17 Students, Including Four Football Players [UPDATE: Tanner Brock is a Huge Loss]
Surprising news out of Fort Worth Texas this morning – a DEA drug raid on campus has netted 17 arrests, including four football players. Details are still trickling out, but early reports are that it was a 6-month investigation into selling drugs. Coach Gary Patterson can’t be thrilled with this development, especially after giving these quotes to Sports Illustrated last year about cleaning up the program:
At first glance, it seems like an error or a statistical anomaly: TCU, the Rose Bowl champion and a top five team in each of the past two seasons, did not have a single player among the 204 in the SI/CBS News investigation who were found to have been in trouble with the law. Not one arrest for drunken driving or assault. Not even a citation for public intoxication or disturbing the peace.
“We are not perfect,” says TCU coach Gary Patterson. “In the past we have had kids who’ve made mistakes. But we have tried to recruit the type of high-character kid who gets here and buys into what we are doing and doesn’t want to do anything to embarrass himself or the school.”
Doing background searches on recruits is one reason why TCU has been able to keep its current football players out of trouble. “I always say that I only have to find 20 to 25 [recruits] each year who want to do it the right way,” Patterson says. “Sure, there have been times I’ve bypassed a very talented player because we learned about something he did, but there are always other kids out there. They may need more time to develop, but we know they will buy into what we are doing.”
The names of the four players are expected to be released later today. Welcome to the Big 12, Horned Frogs.
[UPDATE: The four players are LB Tanner Brock, DT D.J. Yendrey, CB Devin Johnson and RT Ty Horn. As Paul Myerberg notes, Brock, an All-American candidate, is a huge loss. He missed 99% of the 2011 season due to injury]
[UPDATE II: If you're curious about what drugs they were allegedly dealing, Fox DFW has details: The drugs involved included marijuana, cocaine, "molly" -- a powdered form of ecstacy, ecstacy pills, and prescription drugs like Xanax, Hydrocodone and Oxycontin, McGee said.]

What kind of drugs? Dont see that detail anywhere
February 15th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Only 17? From a DEA investigation? Local cops can round up 17 low level pot dealers on any college campus with minimal work.
February 15th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
College campus drug dealers are the unsung heroes of their community. Putting their future at risk so you can get baked.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:00 PM

have you seen their mascot? obviously acid/LSD.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
In the USA today article it was: Pot, Coke, E
February 15th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
You would think TBL would have access to this.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Friends of friends at tOSU ran a very successful fake ID business. A lot of people on campus knew about it — then the ATF\FBI raides their off campus house and all of them were rolling on each other during questioning. Good times.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Usually a successful football team has guys arrested for assault or battery. Drug dealers don’t get you to the top.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
I’m dumb and naive as far as drugs go… but what’s the great harm with E? Is it addictive? Mess your brain up? Seems like it’s portrayed as the “have a good time/enhance your senses” for awhile drug. Is it any more harmful than alcohol if used in excess?
February 15th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
What kind of drugs? Dont see that detail anywhere
From ESPN:
“TCU police chief Steve McGee said the students arrested Wednesday were caught in an undercover operation selling marijuana, cocaine, Ecstasy and prescription drugs.”
February 15th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I know lots of TCU people. They like their cocaine.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I think it makes your brain get all fried up. I don’t know, I need to watch Bad Boys II again.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I know lots of TCU people. They like their cocaine.
From my experience with their fans at the Rose Bowl, I bet a lot of them are spending daddy’s money to buy it too.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Most dangerous and deadly substance there? Prescription drugs.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Gary Patterson thinks this is bullshit.
/had to
February 15th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
found this out in my limited experience as well.

I OOWWWWNNNN THIS FUCKIN’ TOWN!
February 15th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
They’re better people than the rapist that OSU just pulled their scholarship from and didn’t get much media attention.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Ecstasy uses most of the serotonin in your body to enhance your senses. The following day, your serotonin levels are extremely low which leads to depression. It can drastically increase your body temperature when you’re rolling too.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
This daddy rad is straight PILE DRIVIN’ the momma rat!
They fuck just like us!
February 15th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
I know lots of TCU people. They like their cocaine.
Private school students love it. SMU’s biggest problem is actually the proliferation of prescription drugs like Fentanyl. That’s the next big drug for people with lots of money to spend.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
It basically destroys your pleasure center of your brain.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
E in its pure state is MDMA. Psychiatrist used to prescribe it to their patients decades ago. I think it raises serotonin levels
February 15th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
It basically destroys your pleasure center of your brain.
Ahh… thanks guys. I’ll be sure to avoid it then.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Think it’s safe to say that most college campuses in America “love their cocaine.”
February 15th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Allegedly.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Think it’s safe to say that most college campuses in America “love their cocaine.”
I’m willing to bet that at state schools and junior colleges you’re more likely to see meth.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
E also helps you score better on SAT scores
/meadow soprano’d
February 15th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
had a buddy who had some latent mental condition take some E and end up spending three months in a loony bin. only fuck with drugs that come out of the ground kiddies.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
only fuck with drugs that come out of the ground kiddies.
/noted.
//don’t really mess with those either, I’m too cheap.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Agreed. Or xanax. In moderation of course.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
How fucking awesome is this?
February 15th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
“RT @PreSnapRead: Johnson is TCU’s starting SS, Horn a backup OT, Brock an AA LB and Yendrey an all-conference DT.”
doesn’t look like these guys were just some scrubs.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
I’m willing to bet that at state schools and junior colleges you’re more likely to see meth.
Nah, probably just in Western Pennsyltucky, Ohio, and Illinois
February 15th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
good timing by OSU with Lin-mania going on.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
How fucking awesome is this?
ha.. yeah, know some friends doing the on in atlanta.. coming up in only a few weeks i think.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
incredibly.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Or anywhere in the country where there isn’t a metropolitan area

Yikes. The next step is to see if TCU has really learned to do as the big boys do and give these players a slap on the wrist.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Private school students love it.
surprisingly coke was getting big at baylor when i graduated.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Where is NDub? He would do something like that
February 15th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
The most difficult part of the obstacle course is when they force you to search for some missing girl while having to deal with the biggest idiots on the planet.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
So would I if I wasn’t so lazy
February 15th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Or anywhere in the country where there isn’t a metropolitan area
Exactly. You’re more likely to see coke in schools where the students have money to throw around and are in or near a major metropolitan area where it isn’t as difficult to ship it to.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Their first two games are against Grambling and Kansas…could really make themselves look good with a two-game suspension (Virginia’s up next but they went to a bowl last season, no need to chance it)
February 15th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Nice
February 15th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
I live on the east coast, and I have never even seen meth in person.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Excellent point. For example: Iowa
February 15th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
surprisingly coke was getting big at baylor when i graduated.
Three years ago, SMU had four students die all in the same school year and each death was drug related. The administration here was shitting its pants trying to keep the press off its back while they investigated.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
I would say that at schools like that you are more likely to see Prescription drugs being abused.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
heard the qb was involved as well.

The college football world is watching you Gary Patterson.

Happened like 3 weeks ago. Good try though.

Yes, especially in the last 5-6 years.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Speaking of Spencer’s limited experience, you should listen to him talk about golf with Husker!
February 15th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Eh, only happens when you get the dirty bullshit.
/ Team Molly
February 15th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Adderall and painkillers for sure. Still, Iowa was in the middle of no where and there was cocaine everywhere.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Ecstacy was the big thing at Miami when I was there. Bunch of rich kids looking to score some E before they headed off to South Beach. More than a few times we heard of some student ending up in the hospital with no recollection of what happened.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Sounds about like the pregame lobby for Call of Duty.

Three years ago, SMU had four students die all in the same school year and each death was drug related. The administration here was shitting its pants trying to keep the press off its back while they investigated.
i remember that. did not look good. one of my pledge brothers used to tell the story of when he visited a buddy at smu, he went to the fraternity house to see what it was like, and there was a mound of coke on the living room table.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
E is nasty shit. Hard to make without contaminant, and even then will just eat holes in your brain. I’d rather do cocaine than E any day.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Can only imagine the cocaine in places like Tempe or Coral Gables.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
fuck xanax. I’ve seen that shit ruin more than one life.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Yea a couple years ago I found myself at a party near ASU that I was clearly to old to be at because there was a group of about 6 19-22 year olds crushing xanax and snorting it and then chasing it with alcohol.
And all I could think was ‘what a waste of a perfect hangover drug’.
/there stash may or may not have gone missing shortly after that
February 15th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
must have happened when Flip Saunders was fired then. Good timing by OSU.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
I was on Adderall during my junior year (I have ADHD) and that shit was fucking terrible. I lost 30 pounds and I was in stomach pain the whole time I was on it. But hey, my grades skyrocketed so I guess it works.
I don’t know how that can be addicting, but different strokes for different folks.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
just updated with the drugs. First I’ve heard of “molly”

Hooray
February 15th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
so does anything taken in excess. But yes xanax is one of the more addictive prescription drugs and I am surprised doctors prescribe large amounts of it.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
I was on Adderall during my junior year (I have ADHD) and that shit was fucking terrible.
i used to take it when cramming for a test, it was amazing how much i would get done. also amazing how long a dip would last while on adderall.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Uh, that’s not a good thing
February 15th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 15th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
I would bet that is at any school in ‘Merica.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Study drugs. Having some time release Adderall during finals week was a godsend.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
I think the dopamine effects is what makes you crazy… similar to cocaine. They all have similar cardiovascular effects, but have varying degrees of making you hallucinate and shit.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
sweet. more gruden.
/no one
February 15th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
I never told anyone because all of my friends would be leeches during mid terms or finals. Fuck Adderall.

the wrong guy is out. get gruden the hell out of there.

ESPN is moving to a two-man booth in 2012: Jon Gruden and Mike Tirico.
About fucking time.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Did it make your heart race? I am debating whether to go on it, and basically think I won’t handle it well. My heart rate is like 44 normally, so when it races, I feel like absolute shit and can’t function well.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
this x 1,000. I still take in once in a while if I am driving for a while (5+ hours) and I will leave a dip in for multiple hours.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
i remember that. did not look good. one of my pledge brothers used to tell the story of when he visited a buddy at smu, he went to the fraternity house to see what it was like, and there was a mound of coke on the living room table.
Let me guess, it was the SAE house. Second guess is Phi Delt.
One of the students who died that year was found dead in a portalet on a construction site in Waco. No one had any clue how she got down there. Eventually they found her dealer and he admitted that she OD’ed at his place. He freaked out, didn’t know what to do, so he drove south and dumped her body. Upon further investigation, SMU PD and DPD found that a major supplier of coke for the entire campus was based in a townhouse just north of sorority row. Once they arrested him and all of his associated dealers, the supply on campus went down for about a year or so. But it looks like its on the rise again.
/hums “Varsity”.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
why would they kick jaws out? dont they know the public hates gruden?
February 15th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
ESPN is moving to a two-man booth in 2012: Jon Gruden and Mike Tirico.
About fucking time.
That just means more Gruden. That’s a fucking terrible idea.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Let me guess, it was the SAE house
you are correct.
the smu chapter was the only one in the state we never had a joint party with.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
/doesn’t really watch MNF unless the Packers are playing
Do a lot of you guys really watch San Diego/Jacksonville just because it’s on Monday Night?
February 15th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
i love adderall…almost no side effects for me, but obviously, it varies person to person.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
That, I didn’t eat food, constant stomach cramps because I haven’t eaten but I still didn’t, I got the shits every morning, constant dry mouth, and drinking 10 beers almost got me blacked out. Big difference between taking it daily, and having one for an exam.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
the smu chapter was the only one in the state we never had a joint party with.
Probably a good idea. When I was a sophomore there was a picture going around campus of some of their pledges doing lines off of their pledge manual and giving a thumbs up.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:35 PM

February 15th, 2012 at 12:37 PM

/fingers crossed
February 15th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
I would be terrified to snort something I’ve never had before. Why would I trust anyone to put the right amount on the table if I’ve never done it before? It only took Len Bias one time to kill himself.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
I had a bunch of percocet at home after a surgery and never could understand why people like them. I took some a few times to help sleep and then ended up flushing the rest. I never felt good/tipsy/fun… just sleepy.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Kids in college doing coke?
I thought the economy was failing or something.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
You might as well hit up the nose candy. Same side effects, except you feel like the fucking man and can drink 100 beers in a night. Win-win.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
It only took Len Bias one time to kill himself.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:40 PM

February 15th, 2012 at 12:41 PM

February 15th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
I think that might be a myth. Lots of people claim that he did blow all the time.
Well yeah… I don’t think you understood his point. Only took him snorting too much coke one time to kill himself. I’m sure at the time he thought it was just going to be like any other time.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
so he played a snap or two?
February 15th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
So, is this AJ Burnett deal going to get done or what?
Also, great move by the Rays extending Maddon yesterday. Love that guy.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
When I lived there the entire city was drenched in E. People at bars just asking everyone if they want any. You had to actively avoid taking it constantly.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
that’s how I am with adderol. I’ve drank enough to kill a person on that shit and never had a hangover.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
I’ve danced with Molly many times…and it’s a damn good time.
February 15th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
