Michael Dyer Leaves Auburn, Follows Gus Malzahn to Arkansas State
What’s going on at Auburn? One year after winning the title, the Tigers seem to be falling apart. First, the school’s offensive mastermind, Gus Malzahn, bolted for Arkansas State in a shocker last month. Malzahn turned down a much more lucrative offer from Vanderbilt in 2010, so why would he leave now?
This week, reports have swirled that Auburn’s star RB, Michael Dyer – who was suspended for the New Year’s Eve bowl game against Virginia – would be following Malzahn to Arkansas State, and the National Football Authority is reporting paperwork was being filed today.
Malzahn obviously will be a massive loss, but Dyer’s departure would be nearly as significant. After rushing for 1,093 yards and five scores as a freshman, he went for 1,242 and 10 TDs this year (though he did nothing against LSU and Alabama). Dyer, who is from Little Rock, was rated the 11th-best football player in the class of 2010.

This has been rumored for over a month by the AU message boards. I never thought he was stupid enough to do it. As crazy Mrs. Malzahn noted in her crazy speech, Dyer has an attitude problem. If the same rumors are to be believed, he also got busted smoking the dope. Chizik is a hardass and was going to keep him in the doghouse. If Dyer really does leave, it tells me he’d rather take the easy way out than put the work in to get back in good standing. Judging by the bowl game, I think the damage will be minimal. Plus, we’ve got a redshirt freshman named Mike Blakely who is going to be really, really good.

So does Dyer have to sit out a year?

Rumor is he’s going to claim a hardship, saying that his grandmother is sick in Little Rock. That would keep him from sitting out a year if granted.

You know who else will replace Dyer adequately? Tre Mason. You know which band Tre Mason’s Dad played in?

So when ASU plays Memphis next time, my hapless Tigers gotta deal with this guy down the road?

Forgive the ignorance, never check mock drafts..but is Dyer expected get drafted high? (and pardon the “suspended for pot” pun).
I live near Auburn, and people have been saying they’ve seen him late 1st, early 2nd in some mock drafts, but then again, those are Auburn fans.
If he can’t get the transfer waiver, would he redshirt?

Very little chance he will be granted a hardship, though I suspect Chizik would play along to be nice. It’s in the NCAA’s hands, however.
Bo Jackson reportedly called Dyer to talk some sense into him, and Dyer hung up on him. So I don’t really know what else the team can do. Sounds like Dyer has grade issues at a minimum, as well as other stuff on the side…
I think Auburn will be fine at running back.

Sorry, that seems like the trolliest message board material of all-time.
But yes, I agree, especially with an improved line, we are going to be fine at RB.

I don’t see him as a 1st or 2nd rounder. He’s really short, has never had to block too much, and yet rarely catches the ball out of the backfield. But he’s durable, plays awfully hard, and hits holes well, especially in the second half.

And also TBL, you know Auburn isn’t in Birmingham, right?

Knile Davis > Michael Dyer. Though as a WKU fan, I’m not thrilled with the news.

It’s really too bad he’s not headed to Fayetteville. Auburn fans would eat their young. More frequently than before.
