2011-2012 NBA Predictions Go Here
The NBA season begins Sunday, and since many of you will be off the web the next few days doing last minute Christmas shopping, this seems like a good time to post NBA predictions. (We already did an NBA A-to-Z.) Keeping in mind the season is only 66 games and Dwight Howard hasn’t been traded yet … here goes:
Playoff teams in the East:
1. Miami Heat
2. Chicago Bulls
3. New York Knicks
4. Boston Celtics
5. Indiana Pacers
6. Philadelphia 76ers
7. Washington Wizards
8. Milwaukee Bucks
Where’s Orlando? I think Dwight Howard will be traded sooner rather than later.
Where’s Atlanta? Don’t like the backcourt. But I always think Atlanta will flop. Usually, the Hawks prove me wrong.
Where’s New Jersey? I don’t think they’ll get Dwight Howard. I think he’ll go to the Lakers, which is why I have them so high in the West.
Playoffs: Miami over Milwaukee, Chicago over Washington, New York over Philadelphia, Indiana over Boston (!)
2nd round: Miami over Indiana, New York over Chicago (Yes, I’m buying into Baron Davis and a cast of characters in the backcourt!)
ECF: Miami over New York in 6
Playoff teams in the West:
1. LA Clippers
2. Oklahoma City Thunder
3. Dallas Mavericks
4. LA Lakers
5. Memphis Grizzlies
6. San Antonio Spurs
7. Golden State Warriors
8. Portland Trailblazers
Where’s Denver? Should have them 7th, but I always like the Warriors (well, as long as Stephen Curry is there).
Where’s Minnesota? One year away.
Playoffs: Clippers over Blazers, Thunder over Warriors, Mavericks over Spurs, Lakers over Grizzlies
2nd round: Clippers over Lakers, Thunder over Mavericks
ECF: Clippers over Thunder in 7
Yes, I’m completely going all-in on Chris Paul and the Clippers. He guided decent Hornets’ teams to the playoffs, and now he’s got talent around him. The Clippers are young and vibrant; the Lakers, Mavs and Spurs are all much older. I am greatly looking forward to Chris Paul vs. Russell Westbrook in a 7-game series.
In the finals, I’ll take the Heat over the Clippers in 6.
MVP: Kevin Durant
Scoring leader: Carmelo Anthony
Rookie of the Year: Kemba Walker, Charlotte

Kemba was drafted 9th overall.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Heat Over Thunder in Finals in 6
MVP: Lebron
ROY: Derrick Williams
Clippers in the finals? Calm your ass down…
December 21st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Good stuff, Hernia. Love these parody pieces.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
might as well just give the heat the trophy now. save everyone 2/3 the time it’d have normally took.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Wow, setting yourself up for a big Knicks letdown . . . and if you feel that Boston-Indy is a 4-5 matchup, than the Pacers winning will not be a “!” worthy upset. Celts are just too old and thin on the bench.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Much to my dismay, Heat get it done this year.
Much to my delight, the Knicks disappoint in the results department despite being a highly aesthetically pleasing form of basketball for people to watch.
If the Mavericks swoop in and acquire Dwight Howard, all bets are off. There isn’t a post combo in the world that can stop Dirk and Dwight on the same team.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:21 PM
The Pistons will be horrible.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:21 PM
+1
December 21st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
I’d love to see Kobe Bryant win the MVP this year. Chances aren’t good, but that’s who I’m rooting for.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
This would be delicious.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
The Knicks in the ECF? They have no backcourt and 2 guys who don’t play defense.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
sad face
December 21st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
I also think the Grizzlies have a better chance to make a run than the Clippers. I realize that isn’t the sexy pick — but the Grizz are a matchup nightmare.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
I would greatly enjoy a month of May that included the Bulls-Knicks, followed by Bulls-Heat as well as Blackhawks-Red Wings and Blackhawks-Canucks.
You’re not getting me to watch the NBA playoffs before the conference finals unless it’s the Chicago Bulls though.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Who’s running D’Antoni’s offense? Bibby? Baron? Please.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:26 PM
My only prediction: 3 sub-.500 teams make the Leastern Conference playoffs.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:26 PM
How is that possible? This is Mike D’Antoni’s team! All that guy does is stress defensive fundamentals!
December 21st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
My prediction for the Phoenix Suns.
Heat over western conference representative in finals.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
The signing of Jannero Pargo will shock the NBA as he leads the Hawks to a title.
/readies noose
December 21st, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Clippers signed Reggie Evans, who is a perfect player for them. If they can trade Mo Williams for a perimeter defender or another big guy, they can win it all.
OKC should trade for Dwight immediately.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:31 PM
the Lakers, Mavs and Spurs are all much older
Young, sexy teams don’t normally win championships.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Billups’ defense may be crucial to the Clippers’ chances. With Paul being relatively small, Billups gets to cover a lot of 2s. Chauncy’s not a spring chicken any more.
Would love to see the Grizzlies do well, but can they establish themselves as an every-night defensive force? In the playoffs, they thrived on high emotion and defensive intensity, but will they do it game after game now?
December 21st, 2011 at 1:32 PM
I hope there is complete and utter dysfunction for that team from the word Go this season.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Don’t know why, but I love the Pacers this year. Got a bunch of guys on that roster who can contribute every game. Should help with the 66 game schedule.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Knicks aren’t going to do crap. How is Amare’s knee going to hold up for 66 games with all of those back to backs? Oh and they don’t play defense. Sixers are going to surprise (lots of young legs) and be the 4 seed in the East.
/delusional
December 21st, 2011 at 1:34 PM
I hope there is complete and utter dysfunction for that team from the word Go this season.
Rooting for Kobe to win MVP, hating on OKC? Odd views
December 21st, 2011 at 1:34 PM
Love the knee jerk on the clippers. Yes, Paul is great and they will be good. But they didn’t even make the playoffs last year with griffin and Gordon, and now TBL has them as a 1 seed and rusty has them beating the heat?
December 21st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Scoring leader: Carmelo Anthony
Wonder how Amare will feel being second option on offense…
‘Melo may have changed after going to the Knicks, but as a Nugget he was an offensive black hole. The offense bogged down watching him pound the ball. If he is gonna be quicker with his decisions, all the better.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Would love to see the Grizzlies do well, but can they establish themselves as an every-night defensive force? In the playoffs, they thrived on high emotion and defensive intensity, but will they do it game after game now?
I think they can. That style of play has way higher margin of error than other types (Knicks, Clippers). I’m just a sucker for small market teams who build. Any my name has nothing to do with the Memphis Grizzlies — or does it?
December 21st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Jimmer is making the playoffs.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:38 PM
Almost as crazy as the Clippers winning the ECF over the Thunder.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Any my name has nothing to do with the Memphis Grizzlies — or does it?
The plot thickens!
I actually am a Grizzlies fan, but I am always wary of anything from Memphis enjoying long-term success.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Where do I say that?
December 21st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
The Grizzlies have a shot at making noise IF Zach Randolph plays like a monster again. They are the team I’m rooting for in the West after knocking out the Spurs last year. Fuck that team.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Pretty bold Knicks pick TBL. No concern that Amare’e'e’e un-insurable knees and Tyson “fresh off an extended playoff run” Chandler will stay healthy?
December 21st, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Short season with Not much time between games will give teams with depth the advantage over experience. Youth will also be served by this schedule.. I’ll take mavericks and bulls in finals.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:43 PM
If that’s the case then the Suns will be in the WCF. All of their bench players are just as good as their starters. And vice versa.
/sigh
December 21st, 2011 at 1:43 PM
Here, let me help you with that.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:45 PM
The Hawks have made the second round of the NBA Playoffs 3 years in a row (who else can say that?)…and with the same core they aren’t going to make it to the playoffs at all? Ridiculous.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:46 PM
CHAMPIONSHIP! We have one property in the Marvin Gardens area and all other properties fall between St. Charles place and Baltic.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:46 PM
And there is no way the Wizards will be in the playoffs.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Not sure which is more absurdly hilarious…Clippers in NBAF, or Knicks in ECF. I’ll go with Knicks.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
/nods at Sebastian Telfair
December 21st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Just a real feel good story
December 21st, 2011 at 1:51 PM
If the Celtics want to compete this year they have one option.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:51 PM
This:
I think he’ll go to the Lakers, which is why I have them so high in the West.
Does not equal:
4. LA Lakers
December 21st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
The Hawks have made the second round of the NBA Playoffs 3 years in a row (who else can say that?)…and with the same core they aren’t going to make it to the playoffs at all? Ridiculous.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Atlanta are underachievers — but with Smith, Horford and Johnson you’re gonna make the playoffs.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:54 PM
For two months he will be amazing and then his old knees will be old knees.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Get him some help! The man deserves one or two more shots at title #6!
December 21st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
The Clippers went from deep, young and exciting, to now thin, and without a primary scorer. I really like Griffin/Jordan, but neither guy can create his own shots. Unless Billups can play off-guard and be a legit scorer (yeah right) the Clips are a year or two and a player or two away still.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
No chance in hell.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
I thought his knees were mostly embryonic age at this point?
December 21st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
They have those extended scoring droughts once a game. Paul George needs to get more polished before the team jumps into a top 5 seed.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
The 2011 Philadelphia Eagles think these Clippers predictions are outrageous.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
I would bet alot of money that the Knicks & Clippers would not be in the conference finals.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Here let me get that for you.
Look the Lakers have a bench.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
The Clippers are the NBA’s Eagles this year.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Rip looked good with Bulls last night. If he stays healthy changes end of games for Bulls where someone else besides Rose can hit a shot.
I know you’re reeling from the Jets this year, so I will let it slide.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Pistons win 20 games.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
No. They can pick and roll to the second round and maybe the WCF. What they need now is some three point shooters.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
WCF: Spurs over Thunder
ECF: Heat over Magic
Finals: Spurs over Heat
December 21st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
My other NBA prediction for this year? A multitude of posts on TBL of a player dunking in a game and therefore sending a “message”.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Were they deep? They won 32 games last year, and Gordon/Kaman only played 56/32 games, and Aminu played very limited minutes.
The team added Billups and CP3 and Reggie Evans.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
So you think they make the playoffs?
/Eastern Conference zinger
December 21st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Is it just me or does Chris Paul look really fat in that picture up above? (specifically, his arms)
December 21st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
I’m still pissed the Celts could get Warrick. Or keep Tony Allen. Letting TA go caused a rare facebook meltdown for me.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
That’s TBL for you. I think the Hawks are a team he simply doesn’t like. Although as a Hawks fan, I wouldn’t mind if they imploded and rebuilt. Of course they can’t really do that with Joe Johnson’s contract weighing them down.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:05 PM
*couldn’t
Over-under Chris Paul for 55 games played this year…. anyone really that confident right now?
December 21st, 2011 at 2:06 PM

Milwaukee Bucks: 28 wins, swept in first round of the playoffs.
/will become KC Bucks as soon as the Senator dies/sells team
//weeps
December 21st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
No way they can do that. That’s a huge amount of money to pay. It’s one thing for a guy who is worthless, but if JJ is paid $22 million and worth $14 million, you’d still have to pay $14 million to replace him. So you’d be paying $36 million to likely downgrade that position.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
John Hollinger picked the Suns to finish second to last in the West. His ass better be right. I like that idea better than the 7-11 range.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Have they used their amnesty yet? or are they going to run JJ for two more years and then use it?
They have cheap owners, and they’d still owe JJ all that money. Just because his money would come off the cap doesn’t mean they’d spend it.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
I don’t think they have an owner who is willing to do that (which fucking sucks). Atlanta should be a second tier NBA town. If Cuban or another big spending owner had control of them they would be damn good. Instead we get a bunch of idiots who can’t agree on anything.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
What if we got a Kobe-Timmy combo together, Brawny? We could live out the glory of one last title for each. I’ll see if I can get a Kobe to SA interest group started after the holidays.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Cavs will win 18 games and the lottery again.
Next year’s starting 5 of Kyrie, Eyenga, Omri, Varejao, and Anthony Davis (with 6th man Tristan) will be incredible.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Oh I agree. How long can they use their amnesty for? I thought it was any time during the new CBA? If thats the case then you keep JJ for 3 years and then axe him.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:10 PM

Allen is a great glue guy. Plus, you can count on him for several hilarious observations each season.

I’d rather be in a room with 5000 hipsters.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:11 PM

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Joe-Johnson-to-sign-a-ridiculous-deal-with-the-A?urn=nba-252877
Here’s a Yahoo article killing the deal/Johnson before it was signed. Just brutal.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Fuck that shit. Timmy is all class. Kobe couldn’t fit in there with the Spurs culture. Besides, does Kobe need another title as a 2nd banana? What does that prove?
December 21st, 2011 at 2:12 PM
I also think Kobe Bryant is going to go into Beast Mode this season and show everyone he still has gas left in his tank. CP3 trade nixed, Odom traded, No Howard, everyone jumping on the Clips bandwagon, and a no prenup divorce has the makings for a very driven Kobe letting everyone know that he’s still the best player in the game
Hahahahhaahahahahahaha
wait….
hahahahahahahaahahahaha
December 21st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Thank God the draft is pretty solid next year.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Let me get that for you…
2013 Finals: Spurs over Brooklyn Nets
/that can BE arranged
December 21st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
I wouldn’t lock the Blazers so quickly. The loss of Roy and Oden (shocker) hurt, but they still have an All Star in Aldridge, young proven talent in Batum and Wes Matthews, a solid point in Felton, and just added a scorer w/ Crawford. Throw in some veteran bigs with Kurt Thomas and Camby and wildcards like Elliot Williams and Nolan Smith, not to mention Gerald Wallace. They won’t be at the top, but I doubt they fall as far as #8.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Hawks fans can blame Robert Sarver for their predicament.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
I approve.

Depressed being stuck in New Orleans and New Orleans cuisine mix into one fat ass. Give him two months in LA and he will be trim again.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Pierce was pissed. C’s thought they had him re-signed and all the sudden he was gone. I like tough big 2-3′s that won’t back down from anyone. TA against LeBron/Kobe was a really nice matchup for the C’s. The tough part was figuring out who to take off the court for him.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Think baseball. Or more specifically, the Cubs.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
Well that doesnt work. He’d get a double boner for Theo.

I am missing what this has to do with TBL thinking he wins the ROY.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Wait a minute… now you want Rondo? No takesies-backsies
December 21st, 2011 at 2:29 PM
And where in there is a tough 2-3 guard? You gotta give me Warrick in that deal.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:29 PM
I am missing what this has to do with TBL thinking he wins the ROY.
I could be wrong, but I’d guess that most ROY’s have been drafted in top 5.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:30 PM
On the homepage, the lead in for this article states that in a surprise his pick for ROY was not drafted in the top 10
December 21st, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Or what Diesel said.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:31 PM
I dunno, but after I spent an entire summer saying how much I loved Marcus Williams on that UConn team and was the only NBA-ready guy on the team, I’m done predicting rookies.
/still think he could have been good
December 21st, 2011 at 2:32 PM
to be honest I am so engrained with watching uptempo basketball that I don’t think I would want Rondo. I thought it was the Celtics that didn’t want Rondo. Seems like the right swap if the Suns were going to move Nash though.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:34 PM
Got it. Thanks.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:34 PM
Looked it up… Looks like Amare (9th) was the lowest pick to ever win ROY since the draft went 2 rounds.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Warrick isn’t a guard(but you can certainly have him as well). Childress is your tough 2-3. And you got Grant Hill who has been a stud covering guys the last couple of years.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Mark Jackson in 1988 was the last ROY to be drafted outside the top 10 — only 3 in that time period were from outside the top 5.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:37 PM
mmm yes when those were perfectly healthy knees and he was throwing it down like a mad man. Those were the days.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:39 PM
Heat 66-0, then 4-0, 4-0, 4-0, 4-0.
LeBron gets his crown.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:41 PM
It’s always an upset when TBL doesn’t go chalk. Half the shit I see from him makes me think his NCAA brackets have 3-4 number 1 seeds in the final four every year.
December 21st, 2011 at 2:47 PM
Clippers in the finals? you are as bad as skip bayless!
December 21st, 2011 at 3:01 PM
5. Indiana Pacers
6. Philadelphia 76ers
7. Washington Wizards
8. Milwaukee Bucks
and no Magic? pfft
December 21st, 2011 at 3:08 PM
Bulls do Heat badly in ECF then take a title. If the Heat trade Bosh for somebody, then maybe they have a shot.
December 21st, 2011 at 3:09 PM
Celtics should try for the #8 seed, then just try to savage the Heat in rd 1.
December 21st, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Lakers are too high. Even with potentially getting Dwight Howard they would be worse. They have no Bench and would be giving up at least two starters for Howard, they’d be worse, not better.
This isn’t NBA Live, Jive Turkey.
December 21st, 2011 at 3:51 PM
as was the 2003 Draft.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:07 PM
East: Heat
West: Thunder
Finals: Thunder over Heat in 7 games
MVP: Kevin Durant
ROY: Kyrie Irving
#1 pick in 2012: Minnesota
December 22nd, 2011 at 2:07 PM
I don’t know. I’d like the see the Knicks win a game off of Boston before I’m ready to say they can win a division. The shortened training camp and compacted regular season will likely be similar to 1999 when the teams that tried to incorporate wholesale changes struggled to win games, the ’99 Knicks being a perfect example. The Boston core is the same, as it has been for years, which should serve them well. I hope it doesn’t, but believe it will.
