Texas and Texas A&M End 117-Year-Old Rivalry. Thanks, Longhorn Network!
For 117 years, the Texas and Texas A&M rivalry has epitomized college football. Engrained bitterness, iconic laundry, crisp November air and, now, BSDs soiling everything sacred, so as not to be seen swinging a slightly diminished D. These schools have met every year since 1915. Their fight songs explicitly reference each other, but this will be their final meeting for the foreseeable future. Of course, more than a century’s worth of tradition is a trifle to sacrifice for the exciting array of programming available on the Longhorn Network.
Don’t expect the great rivalry to go out with a flourish. Texas has a dominant defense and, weighed down by inexperienced quarterbacks and running back injuries, an easily dominated offense. This could be very, very ugly.

Yeah, that’s not really what was in the article linked.
We cannot believe, though, that the rivalry won't return in the future, perhaps on the regular schedule or in a bowl game. So instead of saying goodbye to one another, Aggies and Longhorns should just say "until we meet" again.November 24th, 2011 at 8:33 PM
Why is this Texas fault? Its TAM that ran away with its ball. They were a big part of killing the Pac 16 deal last year that would have perserved the game. Texas along with Nebraska asked the rest of the Big 12 teams about a network and everyone including TAM turned them down. Even after this as the LHN was in devolpment Texas again went to TAM and asked them if they wanted to be a part of it and again they were turned down. Even after all of this when TAM made their big stink Texas basically conceded every point TAM asked them to do. Now, good luck TAM selling out a game in the SEC without the Texas game on the secedule.

Dear ESPN Ombudsman….why is Craig James still employed and why is he pointing the finger at others for the breakup of this rivalry? Why isn’t he criticizing Texas for refusing to schedule this game in the future?

The rivalry will continue. Maybe not right away but it will. Nothing like a little hyperbole on thanksgiving.

A&M is not even Texas biggest rival. OU is. This game has always meant more to the Aggies. i agree with the Baylor women’s basketball coach, ” I am not going to have sex with my ex husband.” Goodbye and good luck in the sec Aggies.

jim – good luck to a&m selling out games without texas on the schedule? looking at the texas home schedule wyoming, new mexico, iowa state and baylor – hell sign me up for tickets right now with that epic draw.
there is a reason that nebraska colorado a&m and missouri left, and it is all on texas.

If the rivalry is so good, there has to be a way to make it work. If they can’t make it work, they rivalry isn’t that great.

Anyone suggesting that this game has always meant more to a&m than to Texas or that either team will have trouble selling out home games demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the fan bases of both schools and a lack of knowledge of the rivalry. Both of you haven’t a clue what you are talking about.

Texas grad with a niece at A&m currently.

Apparently you werent there in the late 80s and 90s when a&m owned Texas. I’m willing to bet the rivalry was a bug deal to texas then.

Texas’s band formed “thanks for the memories ATM” at halftime while playing
“thanks for the memories”. You’re right, this rivalry means little to Texas.
November 24th, 2011 at 10:41 PM
And both schools mention each other in their fight songs. But yeah, you’re right, this rivalry means little.

85 grad. I am fully aware that Sherrill owned us but it still was never as big of a deal as OU. SMU was a pretty big deal when I was there as well.

I guess we’ll agree to disagree, but I like the preponderance of evidence in my favor.
November 24th, 2011 at 10:46 PM
I also didn’t say it meant nothing. Tx is A&M’s biggest rival. A&M isn’t necessarily Texas’ biggest.
November 24th, 2011 at 10:48 PM
At least the game is heating up.

Fuck Texas. The entire state. I’m so fucking happy Arkansas caused the downfall of the SWC.
November 24th, 2011 at 11:07 PM
Maybe this will finally be the year Arkansas wins something since they left. Nah.

You just worry about your own shitty team.
God, Texas A&M is even more terrible.
November 24th, 2011 at 11:59 PM
This is a most remarkable season from Texas A&M. This shit cray.

Mike Sherman deserves to be dragged out in the street and beaten to death. What a waste of talent he has overseen.
Solid recruiter, terrible developer of talent, even worse game day manager.
November 25th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
With A&M moving to the sec, I think it’s unlikely they’ll shake things up.

I’ll just put Sumlin to aTm out there.
