Steve Spurrier Refused to Start His Weekly Press Conference Until Columnist Ron Morris Left the Room [Video]

Steve Spurrier caused a ripple in South Carolina earlier today when he refused to do his weekly press conference until State columnist Ron Morris left the room. Spurrier said this is only the 2nd time in 26 years as a coach he’s had to disassociate himself from a reporter (the other guy: Larry Guest; details can be found here). What got Spurrier so angry?

After South Carolina crushed Kentucky 54-3, Morris had kind of a sour take (and took a shot at Spurrier for passing while leading 40-3). Last week, Morris pinned the shocking loss to Auburn on Spurrier (he probably wasn’t the only one).

But Spurrier’s anger had nothing to do with those columns. Spurrier’s peeved about this story from six months ago about Bruce Ellington, poaching, and basketball. Why’d Spurrier wait so long to get angry? Not sure.

I don’t know Ron Morris, but I did find this somewhat funny.

Being a big time College football coach who has won a National Title must be awesome.
It’s not a shot at Spurrier (who I like) so much as it is an observation at the type of fiefdom these guys can run when they win.

I liked a drink also in college but Garcia is just an idiot. So many chances and he just kept on messing up.

Yeah, but Coach Cal loves the media. When has he ever been dismissive like this? He’s got a masters in media relations. That dude is a sly fox when it comes to handling the press. He’s dirty as all get out, but that’s a talent you’ve got to have when you’ve got the aforementioned quality.

BTW…vis a vis Spurrier’s actions, no matter how this is viewed by the national public, it is a massively popular move among the Gamecock fanbase. Morris is Public Enemy #1, and has actually caused The State to lose a large number of advertisers in the last couple of years.

Wait. When did Spurrier coach at Southern Cal? That’s right, he didn’t. Why would anyone refer to themselves as USC if you are not from California. Nobody in the country refers to the Gamecocks as USC unless you are from South Carolina.
