Hunter Pence Traded to the Phillies for Four Minor Leaguers
Busy night in Philadelphia sports – three hours after the Eagles swooped in and nabbed cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha in free agency, the Phillies made a significant move themselves – they traded prospects Jonathan Singleton, Jarred Cosart and two players to be named later for Houston’s best (only?) player, outfielder Hunter Pence.
Did the Phillies pull the trigger because the Giants just grabbed Carlos Beltran? The teams seem destined for another collision in the NLCS, and to not make a move might have looked bad for Philadelphia. The fact that the Phillies didn’t part with prized prospect Domonic Brown – currently struggling in the majors – is rather impressive. Pence, who is 9th in the NL in hitting (.309), probably goes into the outfield and Brown moves to the bench.
Baseball America rates Singleton (19 years old, could have been viewed as the heir apparent to Ryan Howard at 1st) as the 39th best prospect in the minors. Cosart, a 20-year-old righty, is ranked 70th.
The Astros, who are the worst team in baseball, also have the distinction of having the worst farm system in the sport (you could see this coming back in March).

Unless they get bullpen help, this won’t get them past the Giants.

I need MS621 to tell me how I should feel
/doesn’t watch a lot of sports these days

Phillies bullpen ERA has been around 3.5-3.6, not terrible.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:11 PM
I know it hasn’t been terrible but the Giants bullpen is just so damn good right now. Bastardo has been the saving grace for the Phillies this year

and seriously Houston, you got fucked over. Couldn’t even get a major leaguer in return? Ed Wade, just quit now.

14/16 Sox over Sawx now, baseball’s a weird game
July 29th, 2011 at 10:25 PM
Every Wakefield start is weird. You never know if he’ll go 8 shutout innings or get shelled for 10 runs in 5 innings. Good job by the White Sox of cashing in late in the game off Old Man River. Sergio Santos has some nasty stuff as the closer.

did you say knuckleballers?
wsoz over bosox that many times is no stranger than royals beating wsox in chicago 2/3

Texans, it’s sad to see pence go, but this is a good trade. Crosart and singleton are great prospects. If Dom brown is their #1, then crosart and singleton are 2 and 3. Also pence is eligible for a new deal in two years when he’s 30. We don’t need to do another multi year deal for someone over 30. Carlos lee is an example of that.
This is a good move by wade.
July 29th, 2011 at 11:30 PM
That’s actually a really good deal for Houston. The original rumors had them getting just one of those guys.
July 29th, 2011 at 11:41 PM
The deal yesterday that wade walked away from was these two guys and another minor league pitcher. This way it’s 4 for 1. Can’t fault wade for this at all.

Ed wade > d wade
July 29th, 2011 at 11:44 PM
Ed wade has never left a game in a wheelchair. So yeah I’d agree with that Spencer.

I’m a little disappointed that the Phillies didn’t get Carlos Quentin instead. I wanted to see him in Philly. That would’ve been like McGwire to the Cardinals
July 30th, 2011 at 12:09 AM
I kind of hope the Astros hang on to bourn. But if they can get someone to take myers or wandy I’d be cool with that too.
July 30th, 2011 at 12:11 AM
Are they gonna trade both of those guys? Could probably get a pretty good return on either of them
July 30th, 2011 at 12:15 AM
Stark, wade will if hd can. Jim crane wants the payroll down to $60 million. He wants to build in the Tampa bay model.
Wandy and especially myers don’t have very attractive contracts though. If myers gets moved I think it will be after the deadline. Wandy is drawing interest from the yankees.
July 30th, 2011 at 12:17 AM
The Yankees won’t trade any of their over-rated prospects, though. That rule that you can’t trade a drafted player for a year after they sign is still in place, isn’t it? Bichette Jr is gonna be the truth.
July 30th, 2011 at 12:18 AM
People who don’t like this trade for the Astros must be huge fans of Brian Sabean and Ned Colletti.
July 30th, 2011 at 12:19 AM
Wandy will only fetch a mid level prospect, but that’s ok. He and myers would both be a salary dump.
I honestly kind of like wade after this deal. It makes me very conflicted.
July 30th, 2011 at 12:23 AM
I understand the idea of holding to a budget but I wouldn’t dump Wandy for that. Wait for the winter, at least. He’s a good pitcher. I would get rid of the wife beater for a box of mixed hard candies, but I’ve never been able to honestly evaluate him as a player
July 30th, 2011 at 12:23 AM
This deal makes me think that wade will be retained by crane. I don’t think crane would trust him to make this deal if he wasn’t keeping wade. I’d like to see them keep mills too, but I don’t think they will.
July 30th, 2011 at 12:27 AM
Stark wandy’s legacy is inconsistency. Some games he looks like an ace. Others not so much. He has been in his career at times been allergic to pitching well on the road. If the Yankees are interested and willing to take on salary and give up a prospect then it’s a good deal.
July 30th, 2011 at 12:30 AM
Now the Braves need to make a move of some kind.
July 30th, 2011 at 7:45 AM
Here’s Ed Wade in a nutshell for you:
the Phillies offered up Domonic Brown as part of the trade. Ed Wade initially turned down the offer because HE DID NOT WANT HIM! Instead he settled for more guys in A ball.
/facepalm
