Marlins Close Upper Deck For The Rest of 2011
On May 31st, the Marlins were 31-22, 2 games out of first and not only did they lead the wild card race, but they had the 4th best record in all of baseball. Obviously, that was a small sample size. June corrected that as the Marlins lost 19 of 20 games in the first 24 days of the month. By the time it was over, they had dropped from the wild card lead to last in their division behind the Phillies, Braves, Mets and Nationals. It was fucking brutal.
At the halfway point of the season the Florida Marlins are 43-48, 14 games out of 1st place and 10.5 games out of the wild card. Things are looking up though. Heading into the All-Star break, the Marlins had won 5 in a row and 9 of their last 11. That’s a damn good stretch for a team that had losing streaks of 8 and 11 last month. Despite that hot stretch, the Marlins aren’t selling many tickets.
I know that’s shocking since professional baseball in South Florida is synonymous with the words “sell” and “out.” The Marlins currently rank last in baseball in attendance at just over 18,000 tickets a game. It is not known how many of those tickets are comps given to dogs.
With those sad numbers in mind, the Marlins have decided to close their upper deck for the last 31 home games of the year. The organization will upgrade those tickets at no additional fee. They hope that it will create a better atmosphere for the Marlins’ last couple months in Sun Life Stadium before moving to New Florida Marlins Ballpark in 2012. (They should keep that name. It’s as catchy as You Will Soar.)
While a wild card run might out of the question, getting out of the basement would be nice. Hopefully, the Marlins will take this insane new home atmosphere and keep their momentum going in the second half. With Hanley Ramirez starting to swing the bat well and Josh Johnson planning on returning at some point, the Mets and Nationals had better watch their asses.

I always wondered who in the hell bought Creed albums. And then I joined Facebook a couple years ago. People from western Kansas buy Creed albums. And Nickleback albums.

Does “we are closing the upper deck” mean “we are laying off the ushers who we had pathetically standing up there all game”?
July 12th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
The Marlins currently rank last in baseball in attendance at just over 18,000 tickets a game.
1.5 million paid attendance is dead last in the major leagues. How ever will baseball survive?

Obviously we will a new stadium bump next year with the Marlins. Combined with the fact the new stadium is actually in a pretty good location (Sun Life Stadium is in the middle of nowhere and has a Super Wal-Mart right next to it), there should be really good crowds next year. The real challange for the Marlins, and it’s been a problem with them since their inception, is to mantain their crowds.

I bought their first album when I was 17. That’s it

Jim- what are the dimensions of the new ball park? Did they take it down to like 35k in seating? They should also just have lawn seating in the outfield.
July 12th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
I believe the new stadium has a retractable roof.

Ha… yeah.. I think it’s something like 32K. Also… it’s right in the middle of little Havana (I think)… not sure if that’s the BEST neighborhood, but it’s certainly better than way out by the everglades.

More baseball stadiums need to be closer to spring training size parks and not football stadiums.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
The new stadium is 37K seats. It’s the site of the Orange Bowl, which seems more relatable to me than saying Little Havana

THIS.
Their season’s need to be the same length as well. 162 is WAY TOO MANY.

Good luck convincing the owners on that. They’d much prefer to have 10-15K empty seats during they regular season so that they can sell those at high prices during the postseason. Milwaukee went from 56K to 45k… that’s a pretty good number. The Brewers have drawn 3 Million a year for the last 3 or 4 years.

Yet another article I see on deadspin twitter feed, or ESPN, but then linked to the local article.
/on to the game here
July 12th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
the Marlins should just claim that every game is an Orange Out and nobody will notice the empties.

You’ve leased one for a few hours though, right?
July 12th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
My question is this: why are they doing this now? Why not 7 years ago?

Are they going to refund a portion of the cost that the people who paid for season tickets in the lower bowl? I’d be a little annoyed if I paid a lot more $ for seats than the guy next to me did.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
No way, go with the painted fake fans!
July 12th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
The Out Michael Irvin thing just makes me like Irvin even more. Seriously, one of my fave athletes of all time and the main reason I shunned my family to become a Canes fan
July 12th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Isn’t the new ballpark taxpayer subsidized?
July 12th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Are they going to refund a portion of the cost that the people who paid for season tickets in the lower bowl?
Short answer: No. The other seats are being upgraded for free. It doesn’t mean your seat is being downgraded. It’s not a house you bought that’s losing value
July 12th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
Isn’t the new ballpark taxpayer subsidized?
Yeah.. from my understanding the Marlins really fucked the city of Miami and the state of Florida… It’s all from hotel tax.. but that tax could be used to fun more practical endeavors.. schools, etc.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Isn’t the new ballpark taxpayer subsidized?
Yep, big time.
County: $347 million
City: $13 million
Tourist tax dollars: $297 million
Marlins: $155 million
July 12th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
And they can’t afford to pay their franchise player so he will leave. That does not make sense.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Short answer: No. The other seats are being upgraded for free. It doesn’t mean your seat is being downgraded. It’s not a house you bought that’s losing value
Well, If I paid 1000 or whatever the cost is for lower bowl season tickets is, and the guy sitting next to me paid 300 or whatever, I’d be a little annoyed if he got to sit right next to me for half a season for $700 cheaper, wouldn’t you?
July 12th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
I’d be a little annoyed if he got to sit right next to me for half a season for $700 cheaper, wouldn’t you?
No. I don’t think about what other people paid. If I laid out the cash it was only in relation to what it was worth to me at the time I spent it
July 12th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Not a fan of taxpayer subsidies for something like this, especially considering the attendance at these games (don’t care if they get a bounce in year one and a slight increase because of better location).
July 12th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
No. I don’t think about what other people paid. If I laid out the cash it was only in relation to what it was worth to me at the time I spent it
I have a hunch that a lot of Marlins season ticket holders don’t hold that same view.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:22 PM

Braun’s the franchise and he’s locked up. Fielder’s not worth even half of what he’ll get. It makes sense
July 12th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Perhaps another strongly worded letter to bird selig will do the trick.

They won’t get their money back
July 12th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
I know someone who works selling NBA tickets, and the reason they can’t upgrade the upper deck seats — or allow you to move down at halftime — even when nobody is in the lower bowl, is because they don’t want to piss off season ticket holders.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:24 PM

/sorry, I’m in a snarky and engaging mood today
//you really should have hedged that comment though
///doesn’t matter cause I’m leaving in 6 minutes to go to an ultrasound and see my kid
July 12th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
And as an aside from my previous comment… I don’t have a huge problem with TBL scanning ESPN/Deadspin for good links, because this blog is really all about having all the information, but my two reactions are
1. if you are cherry-picking, cherry-pick the good ones we actually care about and add relevant other links, do some research, and expand the idea (happens a lot, sometimes not)
2. I usually like the posts better that are not something I can find easily by going to ESPN or looking at my twitter feed. I do remember an interview by McIntyre saying how hard he works scouring for links and how many hours a week he works, so I’m not sure how much is just there’s a limited amount of news, that there is a lot of overlap, or…
July 12th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
They won’t get their money back
I never said they would, or should. I said they’d be pissed/annoyed.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
This. I looked at the beginning of last year, and their lineup without Prince was interesting (Braun/Weeks/McGehee/Hart). Just given the status of their farm system, it’s too bad they are contending and can’t flip Prince for a few major league-ready players.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Yikes
July 12th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Shorter answer: No one buys Marlins season tix.

You guys are selling prince a little short I think. He’s really, really good. They’ll miss him a lot.

July 12th, 2011 at 1:30 PM

Of course not. I’m pissed though. Which is all I’m saying Marlins season ticket holders will be.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
He’s really, really good.
He is but he’s not worth $20+M/year, let alone the 27 or whatever it is he’s seeking. The Brewers can’t get anything trading him this year, either, because he won’t sign an extension anywhere he goes.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
Season tickets holders complaining about their season ticket holding experience? Who cares? Screw those rich pricks.
