The Bill Simmons and Keith Olbermann Feud Flares Up Again
Bill Simmons and Keith Olbermann are fighting again, as only swelled 21st Century media celebrities can, by subjecting their hundreds of thousands of twitter followers to petty personal attacks. Olbermann responded to Simmons’ Lakers-Kennedy Assassination joke by claiming Simmons had no taste in addition to having no talent. The barbs flew.
Bill said he “should have taken (Keith’s) advice and been so vicious to Suzy Kolber that she locked herself in a bathroom and cried.” Keith said that “obviously (Bill) did; those crap columns must come from somewhere.” (Semicolon. He means business.)
Bill linked to a HuffPo article documenting one of the instances Keith showed poor judgment. Keith pointed out that he apologized and suggested Bill (err… “Junior”) do the same. Bill mockingly wished Keith good luck with his new TV show on Current TV. Keith told Bill “good luck getting a show on TV.” (umm…30 for 30…). Bill pointed out to Keith he had “burned bridges at 3 different companies” and no one wanted to hear his advice.
Keith conferred with his twitter followers further, calling Simmons an “unoriginal man” with “C- Material.” He also said ESPN is “just a sports network, and most of it is crap.”
As for the tweet that started this, the Kennedy assassination and the resultant conspiracy theories and details have become such a part of the cultural lexicon, assuming an identity almost independent of the event itself. It has been nearly 50 years since the assassination and nearly 20 since it was parodied on a Seinfeld episode. Other comedy outlets have used it, including Family Guy, a show Olbermann could not enjoy if he was genuinely offended this easily. It’s hard to argue that Simmons’ joke was grossly malignant or offensive to the objective audience.
Where is the statute of limitations on assassination humor? Is every “et tu…” joke noxious? Would Simmons have been equally remiss saying the Kobe Era’s Gräf and Stift took a wrong turn down a Sarajevo sidestreet?
Even accepting Olbermann’s point about the taste level, he soils it by using it to club Simmons as a performance piece for his twitter followers, alerting them (and Simmons) that he finds him talentless and indecent. It’s not surprising Simmons came back with bare knuckles.
Twitter makes everyone actors. It’s not enough just to react or to have an opinion. You now feel compelled to share that opinion with your tens, or hundreds or thousands of followers. You must frame it extremely to draw attention and aggrandize yourself. It turns ordinary people into blowhards and blowhards into spiteful lunatics.
Hopefully, individuals, especially celebrities, can rediscover the art of discrete communication. This Simmons-Olbermann argument could have been settled through direct messages, through an email, through a telephone call or, preferably, through a charity cage match.

What does Grantland Rice have to say about all this?
May 8th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
unless you retweet, your followers won’t know who you are replying to. Unless there’s a feature on twitter that I don’t know about. So unless you are actually clicking on people’s page, you would have no idea who they are feuding with. As a raging liberal, it hurts me to count blowhard like olbermann as one of our own. The man is classless and no better than any other faux news “personality”. It’s obvious that olbermann already had a hatred of simmons and just used this kennedy thing as an excuse to bash him some more. Olbermann has said far worse things about other people on his show.
May 8th, 2011 at 4:39 PM
I thought he got him good with the ‘ON tv’ zinger. as in, hosting his own show. however, im now beginning to realize olberman is a douche in the mold of o’reily, but obviously left.
May 8th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
The only regret Simmons should have is that getting in a pissing match with Olbermann serves to make Olbermann feel as if he is even a little bit relevant.
May 8th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
When your best retort is “you made Suzy Kolber cry”, you haven’t won a damn thing.
May 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
Was there any doubt Darrell was going to take Olbermann’s side on this?
May 8th, 2011 at 5:02 PM
I think its amusing. I don’t tweet, or receive tweets, but if I did I would bet that I would be amused at the two of them squawking at each other. Olberman has certainly made himself less relevant than Simmons in the past five years so this helps him solidify himself with his followers. They are both in the same vein politically so that won’t come up.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:05 PM
?? Both these guys have made careers on ripping others (and doing so with humor and wit). Why would you expect them not to go public with their assaults on eachother? They are entertaining. To see two of the biggest egos out there go toe to toe is great.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:08 PM
Not even in the same stratosphere. KO carried his own show that was built solely around him and his personality. He carried a network with that very show. Bill Simmmons had the “idea” to do some sports documentaries (4 of which were basically re-makes of Beyond the Glory and were just modernized). Let’s not act like Simmons reinvented the wheel here. HBO has been doing great sports documentaries for two decades.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
Almost feel bad for Simmons when he engages Olberman. He sounds like a whiny child getting smacked around.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
there shouldn’t have been any doubt I would. Olbermann’s disses were better than Simmons’.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
I think both are immensely talented, but this is the second time KO has bitchslapped Simmons publicly.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
the idea that Olbermann is less relevant than Simmons anywhere else other than the ESPN cafateria is ridiculous.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:20 PM
our resident contrarian is in full flow.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:23 PM
24 point lead. wow, didn’t see that coming at all.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:24 PM
Work or shoot, simmons has often said that he doesn’t think he is good on TV and doesn’t do it that often. I’m sure, if he wanted to do the travel, he could have a spot as regular fill-in host on PTI, either with Lebatard or with TK/Mayor McCheese.
I used to be a hardcore KO/DP fan back in the day. I guess it was better not knowing what kind of nutter KO was in real life.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:24 PM

This.

And a little bit of that, too.
/Dislikes Simmons
//Respects him anyway
May 8th, 2011 at 5:25 PM
It’s not about being a contrarian. You kids analyze or judge people like you’re wrestling fans, or 14 year olds hanging out at the mall. Your judgements on performance are all based on whether you like someone or not instead of what has actually occured.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:26 PM

as a regular PTI watcher, I’d be down with having Simmons in the rotation.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:26 PM
whatever you say chief highhorse.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:28 PM
He isn’t good on tv at all. Acts really awkward. Some people aren’t meant to be on tv. Emmitt “rites of patches” smiff will surely agree.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:36 PM
Olbermann may be a blowhard, but he’s right about Simmons.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:37 PM
holy crap, lakers resorting to bush league tactics now. What a horrible end to this game.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:39 PM
Bynum’s lucky folks didn’t toss shit at him. I hope Bynum gets a couple games off to start next season.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:39 PM
enjoy your day at the mall Biff.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:40 PM
What a bunch of classless pieces of shit the Lakers are. Fuck Bynum, he should have to miss some games next year.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:42 PM

Great minds, WeaponX.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:44 PM
That’s some cowardly bullshit. Odom and Bynum had nothing to lose on those cheapshots. I am more thrilled than ever now about them getting swept.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:44 PM
Last thing I want to do is get into it with malcolm x wannabe. Continue to howl at the moon, old man.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:45 PM
suspensions can run into next season, right? Bynum deserves atleast a 3 game ban.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:50 PM
I’m hoping so. A fine would not be good enough for that.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:52 PM
Phil really hasn’t coached this team this year at all. Nobody should be surprised how disconnected his team is.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:52 PM
Malcolm X!! I see someone went to Social Studies class this past February. Nice of you to study up on that between Zack and Cody episodes.
May 8th, 2011 at 5:56 PM
que?
May 8th, 2011 at 5:57 PM
who the hell is trey johnson?
May 8th, 2011 at 6:12 PM
I don’t think its the Lakers, its just Bynum and Odom. Its not as if the rest of the players were supporting that. Odom hitting Dirk was for no reason, and Bynum elbowing Barea was out of frustration of losing Odom and losing the series.
Terrible way to end PJ’s career.
May 8th, 2011 at 6:15 PM
That tweet is the reason why BS annoys the living hell out of me sometimes. The loss is not all on Kobe’s shoulders – the rest of his teammates need to be blamed as well. Kobe tried to balance himself out this game to support the team and most of his teammates laid an egg. I’m not saying he shouldn’t shoulder some of the blame for the earlier series, but this series is on Pau and the bench.
Also, I think the Lakers hate Barea. First Artest clocked him, and now Bynum.
May 8th, 2011 at 6:26 PM
Also, I think the Lakers hate Barea. First Artest clocked him, and now Bynum.
Isn’t Barea dating a Playmate or something like that? I’d hate him too. On a serious note, the Lakers went out like total fucking pussies.
May 8th, 2011 at 6:35 PM
Semicolon. He means business.)
gd right
May 8th, 2011 at 7:30 PM
When the Lakers lose, they’re Kobe’s losses. When the Lakers win, Pau should be the MVP, Bynum is the key, etc. etc.
May 8th, 2011 at 8:52 PM
I agree, but what does it say about Olbermann that he’s taking unprovoked shots at somebody a few rungs below on the relevancy ladder?
May 8th, 2011 at 9:43 PM
As a liberal I can tell you Olbermann isn’t one, just merely acting the part of one.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:39 AM
The tone of this article is spot on. A perfect weekend article. Olbermann is a total douche and it’s ridiculous to feign being offended at Kennedy assassination jokes. And I’m a Laker fan who follows Simmons on twitter. If Olbermann thinks he’s so high and mighty for having a TV show, then why does he take the time to posture to his followers by attacking Simmons on Twitter. Simmons attacks where spot on. Olbermann’s were idiotic. Wait until his new website throws a boulder into the lake that is the sports-internet media landscape and let’s see who is more relevant by the end of the year.
And BTW, these comments:
…are complete high-horse bullshit. Stop being a troll, and when something fucking stupid comes to mind, do yourself a favor and don’t post it on the internet.
May 9th, 2011 at 8:19 AM
I have grudge for Bill Simmons and I really don’t care for any of his work. His voice alone sounds like he was one of the bit players on the movie Goonies. Keith was great at one point and time and seems like a angry person who wants to stay relevant. I just don’t get the whole Bill Simmons deal, his passion for Boston sports is a joke, he seems like he enjoy the perks of being a writer, pornstars vip treatment. Sure he wrote a book and he has a nice following but its all a niche. Simmons is a joke.
May 9th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Aaahahaha! Olbermann is relevant?! Does he even have a job? I get douchechills just looking at him.
May 9th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
I would bet anyone 100 dollars to their 50 cents that you mention the names Keith Olbermann and Bill Simmons in any part of this country (including fucking Boston), and more people are going to know Olbermann than Simmons. And you’ll have to spend your time correcting half the people who tell you they know Simmons by saying “no, not the guy who works at the drugstore, the star of the ESPN website”. It’s not even close.
May 9th, 2011 at 11:34 AM

More people have probably heard of Carrot Top too, but he, like Olbermann, is an unemployed has-been who nobody likes.

This.
May 9th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Olbermann is such a douche… Simmons should learn to just ignore the trolling. Nothing wrong with his original comment.
May 9th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
I don’t think Carrot Top has a similar career path as the other two. Nice try though.
May 9th, 2011 at 1:45 PM
why would Simmons ignore someone with much higher name recognition? The thing he needs to do is come up with better comebacks than “you made Suzy Kolber cry”. Makes me think he’s lost without being able to insert a cultural reference or playing his role as Larry Bird’s left testicle.
May 9th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Carrot Top and Olbermann haven’t had the same career paths, but they have had similar trajectories. Both are both one-trick ponies who are gracelessly clutching at current events to keep the withered husks of their former fame from blowing away in the winds of irrelevance.
May 9th, 2011 at 1:56 PM
You’re calling them one trick ponies and you’re defending a one trick pony such as Simmons!!!! really? No, no, no….REALLY!!!!
May 9th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Identify one place where I have defended Simmons. I hadn’t even written his name before just now. Pay attention, and ease up on the capital letters and exclamation points.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
I’ll ease up on the exclamation points and capital letters when you ease up on quoting yourself and using Grantland Rice, Four Horsemen of Notre Dame type scenery in your prose. withered husks, former fame blowing away in the winds of irrelevance. Please! (exclamation point)
May 9th, 2011 at 2:14 PM
You find the place where I defend Simmons yet?
May 9th, 2011 at 2:14 PM
Ok, that’s fine. I’ll take your word for it that you were not defending Simmons. I find it peculiar however, that you would mention one trick ponies, and include a guy who was at the top of the chain on a sports network and news network, while taking a look at Simmons’ career and not see him as such, or at least include him in that category. Interesting.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
You know someone is a has-been when his supporters will only define him by what he “was” in the past.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
It’s described as “has”, because it’s what he “has” done so far. Nice try though.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
It’s described as “has”, because it’s what he “has” done so far. Nice try though.
Well then, at least we can both agree Keith Olbermann is a has-been.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
If it makes you feel better, I’ll agree that he is a “has” been, as long as you agree that Simmons is a has not been.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
If it makes you feel better, I’ll agree that he is a “has” been, as long as you agree that Simmons is a has not been.
Have fun watching Olbermann on his Youtube channel, I’ll be following Simmons on ESPN.
May 9th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
ESPN 3? ESPN Page 2? He’d be better of with YouTube
May 9th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
One’s a writer, the other a TV personality, why is the former’s TV appearances brought into the discussion? If you’re going to do that how’s about getting a breakdown of page hits for his columns versus Olbermann’s blog
May 9th, 2011 at 4:31 PM
Stats!
May 9th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
wow, that has to be a record for second-day additions to a post
May 9th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
Someone mentioned Simmons’ relevance as being superior.
May 9th, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Love the Carrot Top reference. Hope Simmons ends up in Vegas with that steroided out freak. Sadly, Simmons is such a freak that people might actually pay to see him in Vegas.
