Jim Tressel and Ohio State Could Face Major Violations For Not Disclosing Memorabilia Scandal
Yahoo’s harbinger of doom has struck again. Charles Robinson and Dan Wetzel have a source who claims Jim Tressel knew about players selling memorabilia in April 2010, not December as previously claimed. If substantiated, both Tressel and Ohio State could face major NCAA violations. Emphasis on the “if substantiated.”
Ohio State said it had no prior knowledge of players selling memorabilia to tattoo shop owner Edward Rife until Dec. 7, 2010, when alerted by federal officials. The Yahoo! source says “a concerned party” contacted Tressel and he “indicated that he would investigate the matter and take appropriate action.” No apparent action was taken. Both parties would be held accountable, but the degree will depend on whether Tressel informed other school officials or not.
If the allegations are true, Tressel’s situation would be untenable. Not reporting an NCAA violation is a violation. The NCAA could charge him with “unethical conduct, failure to monitor and a failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance.” Instead of a cushy retirement package, the seemingly unassailable coach could (and if the allegations are true, should) be fired with cause.
Ohio State, if found guilty, would vacate the 2010 season and face further sanctions. The initial infraction would not be as bad as egregious as the Reggie Bush scandal at USC, but the university’s cover-up would likely be less palatable.
The hard part is proving this. A trusted source’s word is good enough for the reporting court, but for Ohio State to face more than public scorn there must be conclusive evidence that conversation took place. Was it over email? Is there a phone record? Anything Tressel can’t plausibly deny? We don’t know the results of the investigation. We just know there’s something to investigate.
Ohio State took heat for not responding immediately. It takes time to get ducks, and cover stories, in order.

Fuck THE Ohio State University.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
I hope spence shows up with the same anger he had over at TVF.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
They will need to find proof, beyond heresay, that Tressel knew of the allegations.
Good luck.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
No need for my thesaurus in this post. Good job duffy.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Nope. 10 words, then that guy’s name sends me a runnin’. Mostly because:
That’s the headline. It should be edited to say, “Source Says: Blah Blah Blah”. He’s got one, unidentified source. This isn’t Cam Newton with a paper trail, multiple sources (ask irish, that guy is trustworthy), and recorded conversations.
Dan Wetzel is quickly turning whatever reputation and credibility he once had into heretic journalism for the sake of money. While that is certainly a lucrative niche, until he answers his detractors and their counterpoints he isn’t worth my time to read.

Long time lurker first time poster.

he could easily pull a peter carroll and jump to the NFL, which would probably be best for all parties involved.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Where’s Spencer??
March 8th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
I’ll second that.
Now excuse me while I pray to the football gods.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Wetzel never had any credibility. However, he is now gaining some by going after OSU.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Doubt it. Tressel has banked an awful lot of public support in the C-Bus.
Even if he were to leave (which at this point is highly unlikely), he’s not an NFL guy.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Where’s Spencer??
he’s at the gyno.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Hasn’t everyone already come to the conclusion that most BCS football is a sham? Seems loose, to say the least, that a single source after the fact can initiate a Wetzel gotcha piece. So, based on this theory, anyone could call in to any athletic department and suggest wrong-doing, which in turn must lead to internal investigation?
Shh…hey the BCS are a bunch of cheaters…please investigate and then source me as anonymous next year.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I’d like to see some longer suspensions, just so MSU can make it to the BIG10 championship game next year.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Sources, smources, we want proof! Until then I’ll be quietly hoping that it’s true.
In other news, Barcelona vs. Arsenal is only 2 hours away!!

March 8th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
the potential of this section is outstanding
March 8th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
do you REALLY think they’d run this on some weak, circumstantial quote from a sketchy source?
March 8th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Tressel, you see that flash of light in the corner of your eye? That’s your career dissipation light. It just went into high gear…
/name that movie
March 8th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Long, long ago, yes. It’s all about the money, not the sport nowadays.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Seems like Wetzel is trying to bait Tressel into a confession or something. Don Tresseleone aint going out like that.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
But hasn’t Tressell hinted that we plans on retiring in the next few years? Could this, if there is any proof, expedite that process? I hope not just b/c I’m slightly nervous OSU would come after Dantonio. But then again, they’d probably hire that homo Urban Meyer.

March 8th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
If the NCAA determines that OSU knew of the violations before last season (April) and did not report it and did allow these players to play, we could be looking at a complete vacating of the 2010 season.
JHS – cheater, just like Tressel.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
No way, however, looks bad on Yahoo’s part that they didn’t wait for FOIA request to be ruled on. You don’t run this story until you’ve exhausted that right? Unless they thought someone else was on the story and they needed to get it out.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Good luck proving this. Secret source is probably Rich Rod.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
The consensus seems to be that he has about 5-6 years left, after which he would slide into a role in the Atheltic Department. Obviously, any future “failure to control” charges would complicate this progression.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Brilliant.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Tressel is my kind of guy. If I heard that my players had broken a rule that’s as obsurd as this one, I’d bury that shit too. I’m going to sabotage my program and my players because some idiots who’s only job is to make up retarded rules cooked up this batch of nonsense? Fuck that.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
This just opens the door for Urban Meyer to take over in 3 years.

March 8th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Do you think Spence is avoiding this thread? Or might he actually be busy?
March 8th, 2011 at 12:40 PM

His entire book is based on cherry picked statistics and “evidence”. Yes, I certainly do think they would run it from a sketchy source.

March 8th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Where would the world be if no one ever challenged rules that don’t make sense?
Let’s go back to the source of this whole issue. Some college kids exchanged stuff that they owned for legal goods and services. Other than the fact that someone arbitrarily made up a rule saying that was not ok, what was wrong with that scenario?
March 8th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
If I were the Indians, I’d do it. He’s the best prospect in your system. But it won’t happen b/c of that gay as fuck super 2 rule. Won’t see him for like 6 weeks, that’s my guess.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Never drank underage either. Yeah, right.
Seriously though, if this is true, Tressel and OSU knew the risks in not reporting this, they know how the NCAA works…they knew the gamble and therefore deserve the punishment.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
I believe the phrase is “possession is 9/10 of the law”
/learned that from an episode of Doug.

Happened with Posey last year, and will most likely happen with Brandon Belt this year, although the kid is flat out raking and making a STRONG case for making the Giants keep him up to start the year and say fuck it.

haha yes, but perception also works in that statement JHS
March 8th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
from what it sounds like, you believe the same about Tressel.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Yup. And it almost cost the Giants a playoff spot by waiting last year. It might cost them one this year. I know they won the WS, but I’m not sure they’re the favorites in that division. If you’re Sabean, you HAVE to start Belt on opening day and keep him there all season.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
CFTalk just tweeted that OSU will be holding a presser today to address these allegations.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
This is true. Tressel should be well aware of how backwards and nonsensical the NCAA is and that they get very militant when you go against them. If it’s true that he knew, he took a calculated risk understanding the possible penalties.
I just happen to hope he gets away with it.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Nope. No one is perfect, including St Tressel.
However, the outrage we are seeing in response to these allegations would lead you to believe they found a dead hooker in his trunk.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
They actually are the favorites in that divsion. The Padres lost Gonzo and their pitching overperformed last year, the D-Backs are well the D-Backs and the Rockies are the only other contenders to the division this year. With the same pitching staff coming back, they’re the favorites until beaten. Do I think their favorites for anything past that? Nope, but favorites in the division, hell yes.

March 8th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
NOT an NCAA violation.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
I feel dirty in saying this, but how are they any different than the allegations against Auburn?
March 8th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Eh?
Nothing blanket-y about it. He wrote a book that you didn’t like, that doesn’t necessarily entail that he’s an unethical reporter.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
However, the outrage we are seeing in response to these allegations would lead you to believe they found a dead hooker in his trunk.
i think people are outraged at the anal rape tressel performes regularly on offense. he has tought the entire midwest how to do it without punishment.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
Anyone seen Spencer today? He chose an interesting day to take off…
i know he has an appointment this afternoon.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Once again, the cover-up is worse than the crime.
March 8th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Even the “pay the players” crowd doesn’t want recruits farming out their services for cash.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Well, Auburn was being investigated for paying a player upwards of 180,000 for his services. I won’t even mention the unethical practice of oversigning in this argument.
According to these recent allegations, Tressel did not come forward early enough (although the violations WERE self reported eventually) in reporting players who traded their OWN PERSONAL POSSESSIONS for tattoos.
Worlds apart.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
All violations, both major and minor, begin with a simple allegation. We will see.
And, I am sure that the OSU fans defending Tressel certainly had the same “wait and see” or “you can ignore the rules you hate” opinion when it came to practice time violations by RichRod.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
I hate all witchhunts regardless of who the team is. This stuff going on with Tressel, just as the stuff going on with RichRod, is absolute bullshit as has been noted in previous comments.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
I personally thought the practice time violations were ridiculous, and a with-hunt provoked by the Free Press.
Now, I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy the ensuing schadenfreude, just as all you Buckeye haters have a right to bask in today.
I just don’t think this story has legs until we see some evidence.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
If both are true, I will agree that Auburn’s violations were much, much worse. But, they would both involve playing ineligible players for an entire season and therefore both could be worthy of vacating all wins in 2010.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Hell yes, I think Dan Wetzel would do exactly that.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
This is not necesserily accurate as to the OSU situation. Pryor and the others could have easily appealed and tied the whole thing up all year. Highly possible the suspensions wouldn’t have been served until this year anyway.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
Charlie Robinson is good, but these guys never say anything when something’s never proven true (like Tim Floyd’s $1,000 handshake). That kind of bothers me. Even if I think it probably was true.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
I feel dirty in saying this, but how are they any different than the allegations against Auburn?
I don’t think anyone is alleging that Ohio State was in any way involved in the memorabilia-for-cash transaction. However, knowing about it and not reporting it is seen as big a deal as having done so.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Jim Tressel, Ohio State President Gordon Gee, Ohio State AD Gene Smith to hold news conference at 7 p.m.
It should be an interesting next couple months…
March 8th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
I should have been clearer. I meant the allegations part. nothing was proven in the Cam Newton case, therefore they are only allegations. I can bold it if you like. they are not worlds apart. they are both allegations at this point.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
This is just weird…why self report it at all if this was going to come out?
March 8th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
and GTFO with your high horse shit. there is no need to mention it because it has nothing to do with this story.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Well, in the Cam Newton case, it WAS proven that his Dad tried to take dough…so more than just allegations there. Allegations as to Cam himself, I suppose you are correct.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Get yo’ popcorn ready.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
If anything, you should relish the spotlight on oversigning. If you really think it’s some positive tactic, then you should welcome the public dialogue about it. I actually think it does have some positive ramifications, but I also think it has many more negatives. But it’s worth having the discussion.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Yes, both are allegations. I think you could argue, at this point, there is more circumstantial evidence in the Auburn case (Runners, Cecil’s admission, Church renovations, purported audio tapes, etc).
March 8th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
This x10000. Couldn’t have less to do with the issue at hand.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Clarett driving around in different cars he doesnt own. Multiple former players saying they had no show jobs. Troy Smith taking payouts. Pryor driving around in different cars he doesnt own. 5 players taking cash/tats on the side.
If these reported, proven stories were linked to and SEC team or USC they would be called dirty cheaters. Somehow captain american flag pin on his sweatervest is still seen as squeaky clean. Fuck that two faced cheater.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
I don’t think it is something positive or negative, I just think it has no bearing on this case at all.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Lets see what the NCAA finds, then cry/celebrate.
I don’t want to see Ohio State in the wrong. It’s bad for my favorite sport. I hope this comes up clear.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Well, people are taking shots at Tressel’s ethical code.
I think the fact the he (along with other Big Ten coaches) refuse to practice oversigning, points towards a stronger moral fiber than other coaches, who shall remain nameless.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Joe Paterno gives hand and rim jobs to recruits.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
that is more what I was getting at. I don’t have a dog in the fight either way. I think Cam was dirty and in this case, I think OSU is “dirty”, regardless of what you feel they can or can sell, or what they own. much like the Cam case, I think where there is some smoke, there is probably fire.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Not really a question of how dumb you think the rule is, breaking the rules is breaking the rules, especially for someone who has built their reputation on and made tons of cash on having the utmost integrity and being Godly.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
At least Saban has the nuts to stand up and defend it, he certainly doesnt hide it. Tressel acts all holier than thou but hes as filthy as they come.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
I meant the allegations part. nothing was proven in the Cam Newton case
Which is why Auburn still has the crystal football.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:28 PM

I’m laughing my ass off at the OSU fans bringing up oversigning. What the fuck does that have to do with this story at all?
March 8th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
It doesn’t. But if people are using these allegations to assassinate his character, I felt it prudent to provide evidence to the contrary.
See #91.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
The only allegation is when he knew, the fact that his players once again disregarded the rules and the multitude of other incidents under his watch are well documented.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
This x 1,000,000
March 8th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
Yahoo and others are intimating that Tressel could get axed tonite. I highly doubt that.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
OSU fans, not unlike any other fan base, get so defensive. The issue at hand is not whether you agree or disagree with the broken rule. The issue is what did Tressel know and when did he know it. It’s that simple.
March 8th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
If anything, you just proved that nothing will come of this allegation.
-OSU was investigated for the Clarett nonsense, and was found guilty of NOTHING.
-Who are these multiple players with no show jobs? Link?
Troy Smith took a couple hundred dollars from a booster, unbeknownst to the University, and was suspended 3 games for his indiscretion.
-Pryor car thing- Investigated, cleared.
-Tats- punished, even though the rule is bullshit.
My question is, when in the past has Tressel exhibited institutional corruption?
NEVER.
In conclusion, I’m dealing with fools and trolls and soft targets. It’s just strafing runs in my underwear before my first cup of coffee. I don’t have time for these clowns.
