Carmelo Anthony Traded To The New York Knicks
Carmelo Anthony has officially been traded (along with Renaldo Balkman) to the New York Knicks in exchange for Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors’ 2012 second-round pick and the Warriors’ 2013 second-round pick. Along with Melo and Balkman, the Knicks also get Chauncey Billups, Anthony Carter and Sheldon Williams. Start counting the 70-win seasons. Anthony Randolph and Eddie Curry are headed to Minnesota (Corey Brewer heads to NY.) along with the $3 million. [Denver Post, Marc J. Spears, Frank Isola, Chris Mannix]

Bad trade. The Knicks got taken. For a guy who doesn’t play D, needs the ball, and only wanted to sign with the Knicks, the Nuggets robbed the bank

What took Isiah so long?
February 21st, 2011 at 10:36 PM
It looks like La La got her way.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:38 PM
What did Minnesota give up in the deal?
February 21st, 2011 at 10:41 PM
I don’t care how much the Knicks gave up. It’s still a star driven league, and the Knicks have 2 of the top 15 players. The east is still dogshit, and will be the 6 seed. Plus, they got CHAUNCEY B-B-B-B-B-BILLUPS!!!.
/I miss those Pistons teams
February 21st, 2011 at 10:44 PM
Hate to see Felton go. He was enjoying his time in this wonderful city.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:44 PM
The Knicks now have 3 of the top 40 players in the league and it’s a bad trade. Sometimes people talk about defense in basketball just to sound like they know what they’re talking about.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:46 PM
whut?
February 21st, 2011 at 10:46 PM
Let’s not act like this Knicks team was going to be the early 90s Knicks with their defense if they didn’t make this trade. Their D was going to suck no matter what.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:46 PM
As a Suns fan this is how I use to defend D’antoni.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:47 PM
oh you mean billups…ok
February 21st, 2011 at 10:48 PM
Knicks got their man… honestly the guys they gave up werent putting them over the top anyway. Chandler and Gallo are both hoisters that wouldnt fit in with Mello. It also sets up the Knicks to get Paul or Williams in the future by getting rid of Felton.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:48 PM
God fucking damn it.
Awful, Awful AWFUL move.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:48 PM
Lot of hassle for a guy who has only been out of the first round once.
Thank goodness this is over with.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:49 PM
All of one and none of the other will place you just short of the championship. Those Suns were the mirror image of the 90′s Knicks teams who could never generate enough offense to get over the hump.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:49 PM
Billups a top 40 player??
February 21st, 2011 at 10:49 PM
minnesota wins…they get fatty off the books and they have young core that could be exciting with the right free agent next year..not a bad move on minnesota’s part..give credit where it is due despite kahn being mildly retarded
February 21st, 2011 at 10:49 PM
This. What the hell math is that?
February 21st, 2011 at 10:50 PM
When you get the opportunity to acquire one of the ten best players in the league for a cast of role players you almost always have to pass on it.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:50 PM
The Knicks gave up a future #1 pick, a lottery pick in Gallo, a first rounder in Chandler and a young PG. That’s a lot for one very goof player in his prime, one good player on the downside (who is also not the right PG for the Knicks system) and 3 roster fillers. That’s a bad trade in my book.
You can’t win in this league if you give up as many points as the Knicks are going to now. They’re barely a 500 team, they’re not going to be much better now
February 21st, 2011 at 10:50 PM
How do we not get a PG out of this? Billups is out after the season and we’re left with Toney Fucking Douglas.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:51 PM
I can’t let you people besmirch chauncey billups.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:51 PM
I shall patiently await the Love for Childress deal.
/please
February 21st, 2011 at 10:53 PM
I haven’t been this giddy since the Hawks drafted Adam Keefe.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:53 PM
This is just dumb. It’s not just mouth-breathing fans who talk about defense. Ask any GMs or Front Office if they obsess over the importance of defense and the answer would be a resounding YES. Come on man, don’t just say stuff to say it.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:54 PM
Billups in D’antonis system should be high comedy. I want to know who is forced out first. Chauncey, D’antoni or Walsh.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:54 PM
Gallinari’s draft position is irrelevant, player for player, the Knicks received better players than they gave away, and unless you can guarantee me that the future number 1 is going to be better than Carmelo Anthony, I’m giving that up for him everytime at this point in his career.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:54 PM
So all Minny gave up was Brewer, and got two players and $3MM? What’s the contract situation on Curry and Randolph?
February 21st, 2011 at 10:55 PM
false.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:55 PM
Afraid it’s going to be Walsh.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:56 PM
There are two camps in this: One that believes you always trade role players for a star and one that believes that you don’t trade your picks and role players for one star and fillers. Only time will tell how this goes down, but right now, imo, it looks like the Knicks got fleeced.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:57 PM
Walsh. His contract runs until the end of April.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:57 PM
Curry is done after this season, Randolph has 2.9 mil next and an option for ’12-’13
February 21st, 2011 at 10:58 PM
Let me know when Melo signs that ever important extension. If he doesnt sign it would be hilarious
February 21st, 2011 at 10:59 PM
They’re equally important. The Lakers and Celtics have been amongst the best defensive teams in the league, but being able to get those stops wouldn’t mean much if they didn’t have the scorers they have. The NBA is about matchups, and right now the Knicks have two players who demand a double team because they have the ability to eat up and defender one on one. But hey, talking about defense makes people sound more intuned with the game.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:00 PM
Knicka, as usual, are stupid. Any team that hires Mike D’Antoni is bound for disappointment. I predict the Knicks will now give up only 104 PPG. Nene and JR Smith – better than anyone on knicks aside from amare. At least Nene plays defense. This trade makes me hope the knicks get swept in the first round by miami or chicago.
In other newa, celtics may get Shane Battier. He actually plays defense. Suck a fat one, miami and new york.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:00 PM
If the Knicks are going to make this work then they need to not think about a PG like Paul or Deron they need to set free agency sights on a Center. Gasol, Nene, Chandler. somebody. Because with Amare and Melo you better have a big bag of knuckles backing them up.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:00 PM
If the Knicks got fleeced . . . then who is currently the best player on Denver’s roster?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:01 PM
Awesome trade. Especially since it’s not like you could sign him this summer or anything.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:01 PM
Right now, Felton and Gallinari > billups and everyone denver gave up aside from melo.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:02 PM
It’s not that, it’s the fact that the Knicks now have no players to be a supporting cast and a paper thin bench
February 21st, 2011 at 11:03 PM
They are sitting at .500, and not passing the Top 4 teams anytime soon with that lineup. Maybe they panicked, but they got their man.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:03 PM
LOL!!
February 21st, 2011 at 11:03 PM
I thought because of the CBA issues it was either get him via trade or he’d sign an extension with Denver
February 21st, 2011 at 11:03 PM
all them no defense suns teams that won it all…imagine how many title they would have won on top of all those if they played a little d. yeah people talk about defense to sound smaht. how is it possible you have been sounding dumber lately? are you trying to feel the void when im gone as village moron? spot is taken pal
February 21st, 2011 at 11:03 PM
Mike NYC,
nene. He’s better than anyone on the knicks pre-trade other than amare. He actually plays defense.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:03 PM
The Celtics aren’t double teaming anyone on that roster. Don’t think the Bulls are either. Maybe even the Heat.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:03 PM
The point is that they gutted their roster, not so much as the parts they traded to Denver, if I’m making any sense haha.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:04 PM
I know it’s not a great comparison, but how did Cleveland do with one superstar and a bunch of roll player. Instead, you have ‘Melo & Amare and a bunch of roll players.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:04 PM
what is this? Go rewatch the olympics. But Chauncey is a downgrade at the pg at this point in his career and when you factor in how much he needs the ball to be effective.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:06 PM
If people think amare and melo demand a double team from the best teams in the east or west, you aren’t actually watching basketball. I hate LeBron but he will shit out Carmelo in his stool.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:06 PM
Please stop.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:07 PM
The lakers and grizzlies think this was a bad trade
/kwame’d
February 21st, 2011 at 11:09 PM
the same number of rings those all defense and no offense Knick teams of the 90′s won. You don’t have to be great at both ends of the floor, but you have to be able to play both ends.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:09 PM
Look Billups is a good player still. He’s better than Felton, even. However he 1). doesn’t fit D’Antoni’s system and 2). will most likely only be here a year.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:10 PM
obviously you haven’t been watching basketball.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:10 PM
I’ll stop when Anthony Carter, Renaldo Balkman, Shelden Williams, and Chauncey Billups become good again. The first three are scrub bench guys and the fourth is an overthehill shoot first point guard. I’ll take a young felton and Gallo over that rag tag bunch of rotting cabbage
February 21st, 2011 at 11:11 PM
Boy, you really are the Skip Bayless of this forum. Contrarian to the core. May I suggest turning in the resume to ESPN for a trial run. Ofcourse you need to be efficient both on the offensive and defensive end. Great point you just made there. *slow clap*
But you speak as if people wondering how they will do defensively is somehow the product of mouthbreathing fans saying crap just to sound intelligent. The same two players you speak of have never been known as defensive stalwart. Tim Duncan and other capable big mens out west regularly made amare their all time favorite bitch EVERY postseason. Carmelo isn’t the next Pippen on the defensive end either. Some good their offensive power will do them in the playoff when they bump up against the celtics.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:12 PM
I find this chat to be inspiring and somewhat moving.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:12 PM
So, we’ll get the word that Donnie Walsh resigned by at least tomorrow morning, right?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:13 PM
Clownley clownington farnsworth the third taught him everything he knows
February 21st, 2011 at 11:15 PM
Amare doesn’t require a double team, Darrel.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:16 PM
To be fair Amare made Duncan look like a complete bitch in plenty of their post season games. The problem with the SSoL Suns was they only ran 7 or 8 deep and always tired. That was a coaching problem and his name was D’antoni.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:16 PM
I’m not speaking on people “wondering” about them defensively, I’m speaking on people overstating any deficiency they may have defensively. Melo isn’t going to win any All Defensive team awards, but he isn’t a sieve either.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:17 PM
this just makes me think “Maybe Darrell has a point.”
February 21st, 2011 at 11:18 PM
Yes, he does actually. At least he did before D’Antoni started playing him every minute of every game.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:18 PM
I don’t recognize the name of a single player other than Carmelo Anthony in that trade.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:18 PM
I’m sure Kevin Garnett is talking things over with Kendrick Perkins right now as to how in the world they can possibly stop Amare “Hakeem Duncan Russell” Stoudamire.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:18 PM
he will be with a coach that doesnt care about defense. I REST MY CASE.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:19 PM
I know it’s not a great comparison, but how did Cleveland do with one superstar and a bunch of roll player. Instead, you have ‘Melo & Amare and a bunch of
rollbad players.There ya go.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:19 PM
By the way, someone can have worse things said about them than being compared to Skip Bayless. I don’t always agree with him, but you can tell he knows his shit and doesn’t run with popular narratives.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:19 PM
billups?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:21 PM
Pau Gasol handled him pretty well all by himself last season in the playoffs. Pau Gasol.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:21 PM
lollerblades..do you get a new 8×10 every month?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:21 PM
You mean one of the best players in the league handled him? Wow. Shocking.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:22 PM
KG is a pussy when it comes to playing Amare. You should watch them play each other.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:23 PM
Wow.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:23 PM
Maybe over some stretch of a game or a handful of games they played against each other. But At worst, Duncan played him to a draw and at best made amare his bitch over the whole series. Can’t count the last time they played each other in a series since Duncan, as much as he is my most favorite athlete ever, is/was just a shell of his former self.
*weeps and pours one out for the great Tim Duncan*
February 21st, 2011 at 11:24 PM
no he didn’t.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:25 PM
If KG remembers some of those Minnesota/Phoenix matchups, that’s exactly what he is doing.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:26 PM
Offensively, yes. But Gasol out-toughing you on D in the postseason should be embarrassing. Let me amend my statement. Amare only requires a double-team if your playing a shitty team. Against a good team, no.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:27 PM
The only teams that need to double team amare are any teams not named Spurs, Lakers, Celtics, Heat, Bulls, Mavericks, and Magic
February 21st, 2011 at 11:28 PM
If you don’t think New York won this trade, you’re an idiot. They gave up role players in a system that pads stats for a genuine superstar. You can replace role players. You can’t replace superstars.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:28 PM
This just stopped me cold. At this point, there’s no reason to argue with you. Whatever dude, have a nice life.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:28 PM
You think Bosh is holding Amar’e by himself?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:30 PM
don’t go away mad. just go away.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:30 PM
I had no idea Stuart Scott has cancer.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:30 PM
Shatner, in the playoffs, lebron will guard amare. Bosh will be too busy cowering in the corner because he’s a pussy.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:30 PM
obviously, we didn’t watch the same series.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:30 PM
Amare had his best playoff games ever against the Spurs and Duncan. And to not count the last series for that reason is stupid because you are counting a Duncan in his prime against a 20 year old Amare for other playoff victories. The fact of the matter is that both did play each other to a stand still and that the Suns lost because their point guard is a defensive liablity and the spurs had dribble penetration.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:32 PM
I’d rather watch 2 hours of stu scott that that “Carmelo’s Journey” segment. Espn must be creaming their pants after being able to show that.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:32 PM
No. There are no worse comparisons.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:33 PM
I think being compared to Jay Mariotti is worse.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:33 PM
23,18,42,21,19,27. With Gasol getting out-rebounding him by far. I’d say that’s handling him pretty well, which is what I said.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:34 PM

Rick bayless >>>>>>>> card game Skip Bo >>>>>>>skip bayless
February 21st, 2011 at 11:36 PM
Dude, trust me, I’m not mad. I’ve had many heated debates with people. Usually because although I disagreed with them, in the back of my mind I knew they were making valid arguments based on reason and good judgement. But at this time, it’s pretty clear that you are the Skip “Nat X” Cowherd of this board. Getting mad at you would be like getting into an argument with a retard and walking away in huff cuz the dumbass is being stupid. In the end, it’s your fault for getting into an argument with a retard. Sorry I bothered responding to your post. Won’t happen again. Believe me.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:36 PM
I’ll settle for equally bad. Skip is on record for saying Ted Thompson made the worst decision in NFL GM HISTORY by choosing Rodgers over Favre, and he stood by this statement even after this year’s Super Bowl.
As for the trade, I absolutely don’t see NYK getting past Boston/Miami/Chicago in the first round this year and they just gave away a huge chunk of their future. Maybe it would have been a risk to wait for free agency to try and land Melo, but if it’s where he wanted to go all along…
February 21st, 2011 at 11:36 PM
Bearing in mind they could have gotten him for nothing during the off-season? Really?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:37 PM
LOL. Did he really say that?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:38 PM
I have no idea what these sentences mean. Do the knicks have two genuine superstars now? Or did they just trade away the pieces that pad the stats for the ‘genuine superstars’?
February 21st, 2011 at 11:39 PM

Yup. Said Rodgers’ Super Bowl MVP didn’t vindicate Thompson because Favre went to two straight Pro Bowls with the Jets and Vikings and Rodgers didn’t go either year. Made me LOL.

February 21st, 2011 at 11:43 PM
they gave away role players and gained a huge chunk of their present and future. It’s an easy trade.
February 21st, 2011 at 11:43 PM

February 21st, 2011 at 11:44 PM

February 21st, 2011 at 11:48 PM
Carmelo doesn’t play defense well and ther giving up 17 from felton 16 from gallanari and 17 from chandler and you get 25 from melo and 16 from billups terreible trade

Hawks are the definition of a NBA team that has hit its plateau. Good enough to make the playoff and perhaps host one round, but that’s it. At least when you are awful, you can look forward to the next hot shot college star that you’re team has a chance to get. Mediocrity is worse than ineptitude.

At this point, why doesn’t the NBA just contract all but the 2 NYC teams, the 2 LA teams, the 2 Fla teams, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston and Phoenix? It’s clear that the majority of its superstars have no desire to play in any other city than one of the mega-ones with the nice tax breaks and the corporate base to make them “global icons” — Duncan and Durant being exceptions to the rule.

duncan’s not that way–diva, demanding, look-at-me–and durant was drafted, tho he seems like he’s got some of the best of duncan, too–humble, quiet, cares only about winning. i see what you mean, tho. where are the demands to be traded to memphis?
and kaiser, i was kidding. the pic of bieber looks great

If only they had done it two weeks ago, then they could have had 2! All-Star starters in the post-Ewing era.
/They’re still the Knicks.

Did that a while back as someone suggested. Just double checked, picture is rated G. Still not showing up.

What’s the big deal? The Knicks are an irrelevant NBA franchise.

This team still isn’t better than the Celtics, Heat, Bulls, or Magic. Also I don’t see how they can get CP3, DWill, or any other superstar player on that team with the amount of money they will command.

Well, this isn’t a bad deal, as some have suggested, especially if they are able to bring in a quality PG. BUT…and this is a big BUT…I do not think this is going to work with D’Antoni for the long term, or with Billups for the short term. As to this season, I don’t see the Knicks doing anything more than they were going to do…lose in the 1st rd as a 6 or 7 seed. For the long term, I see a bright future once D’Antoni is out of the picture.

The Knicks paid for Anthony’s greed to get his contract extension before the new CBA. Anthony could have just waited to the end of the season, no matter where he got dealt, and gone to the Knicks as a free agent. But because of his avarice he gutted his new team’s lineup. Stoudemire, Anthony, Felton, Gallinari would have been strong.
