Brandon Lloyd: The NFL’s Leading Receiver in 2010
One town has altered the landscape of America over the last few years, producing an American Idol, a humble and amazing blogger, and the NFL’s leading receiver in 2010. Brandon Lloyd has been in the league now since 2003, and his career best season was 48 catches and 733 yards for a bad San Francisco team in 2005. At age 29, he has almost reached that total (589 receiving yards) after five games. After three seasons of wandering the league in which he had 36 total catches, he has found a home in Denver playing in Josh McDaniels’ system, and catching passes from Kyle Orton.
How rare is it for a wide receiver to have a breakout season at age 29 or older, like Lloyd? Well, not as rare as I would have thought. Here is the list of wide receivers who had their first 1,000 yard receiving season at 29 or older, since 1960. I also list the number of additional 1,000 yard seasons for these older breakouts.
| year | first | last | age | rec yds | 1000 yd seasons | ||
| 1995 | Brett | Perriman | 30 | 1488 | 1 | ||
| 1995 | Tony | Martin | 30 | 1224 | 3 | ||
| 1964 | Johnny | Morris | 29 | 1200 | 0 | ||
| 2001 | Troy | Brown | 30 | 1199 | 0 | ||
| 1985 | Drew | Hill | 29 | 1169 | 4 | ||
| 1979 | Ahmad | Rashad | 30 | 1156 | 1 | ||
| 2007 | Bobby | Engram | 34 | 1147 | 0 | ||
| 1964 | Elbert | Dubenion | 31 | 1139 | 0 | ||
| 2007 | Kevin | Curtis | 29 | 1110 | 0 | ||
| 1999 | Qadry | Ismail | 29 | 1105 | 1 | ||
| 1995 | Quinn | Early | 30 | 1087 | 0 | ||
| 2006 | Mike | Furrey | 30 | 1086 | 0 | ||
| 2004 | Eddie | Kennison | 31 | 1086 | 1 | ||
| 1979 | Frank | Lewis | 32 | 1082 | 1 | ||
| 2006 | TJ | Houshmandzadeh | 29 | 1081 | 1 | ||
| 1989 | Mervyn | Fernandez | 30 | 1069 | 0 | ||
| 1976 | Charlie | Joiner | 29 | 1056 | 3 | ||
| 1998 | Ed | McCaffrey | 30 | 1053 | 2 | ||
| 1998 | OJ | McDuffie | 29 | 1050 | 0 | ||
| 2001 | Willie | Jackson | 30 | 1046 | 0 | ||
| 1993 | Reggie | Langhorne | 30 | 1038 | 0 | ||
| 1998 | Rocket | Ismail | 29 | 1024 | 1 | ||
| 1981 | Freddie | Scott | 29 | 1022 | 0 | ||
| 1990 | Stephone | Paige | 29 | 1021 | 0 | ||
| 1986 | JT | Smith | 31 | 1014 | 1 | ||
| 1991 | Irving | Fryar | 29 | 1010 | 4 | ||
We have some great names from the past on that list, including some guys who turned out to be one-hit wonders, like Mervyn Fernandez and Mike Furrey. We”ve also got one guy who was (dubiously in my opinion) selected to the Hall of Fame in Joiner, and others who experienced a career revival as they entered their 30′s. Half of the late breakouts would go on to have at least one more 1,000 yard season. Given the quality of his roots, I think you have to like Lloyd’s chances.

he has been quite sick this year…
October 15th, 2010 at 1:53 PM
Knew him a little bit in college. Not much to him.

Brett Perriman! Lions #1, Lions #1, Lions #1.
/I have never in my life said that before.

Jose Bautista agrees and feels any HGH reference is completely bogus.

Great post Lisk. Funny how both Ismail brothers were late bloomers.

Well, isn’t today Midnight Madness? And not a single post dedicated to the movie Midnight Madness?
What the Faga Beefy is going on around here?
October 15th, 2010 at 1:57 PM
Mervyn Fernandez was great when he played with the BC Lions. Him and Roy Dewalt tore shit up.
October 15th, 2010 at 1:57 PM
Ahmad Rashad will always be awesome to me, even if this happened 2 years before I was born.
/fuck you, Browns
//why the hell is this game on in its entirety on youtube, but not on the Vikings Greatest Games DVD??
///just mentioning that set will lead to at least 4 or 5 bad jokes
October 15th, 2010 at 1:58 PM
What does that mean? Physically? Mentally? Personality-wise?
I briefly heard him on the radio yesterday and thought he was well-spoken and likeable. Maybe I’m biased ‘cuz he’s on my fantasy team.
October 15th, 2010 at 1:58 PM
Any chance you could write about CFB as well Mr. Lisk?
October 15th, 2010 at 1:59 PM

Billy, CFL? Where are you from?

Ahmad Rashad, haha.

May want to clarify that you’re talking about Kansas City. Because I doubt many would know that.

fuck you vikings.
you’ll know our pain once the vikes move to LA, s1rweeze.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
I wish you would add team and record columns. I’d be curious to see how many of these teams numbers were achieved on bad teams who were always behind.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:00 PM
Mervyn Fernandez was great
I’ve never heard of this guy but I presume he was nicknamed “Swervin’ Mervyn”

The most shocking thing about that article was that Mellinger thinks the Holiday Bowl sucks and that Kansas State will somehow be playing in it. I think the top non-BCS Big XII team goes to the Holiday to play the Pac-10 #2. K-State aint sniffing the Holiday Bowl this year.

Imagine how Lloyd’s #s would look if the Mexi-God was throwing him the ball. Mother fucker would be approaching Rice #s.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:01 PM
If that happens, I honestly thing many will be more relieved than anything. But the Jags will beat us there.

May want to clarify that you’re talking about Kansas City. Because I doubt many would know that.
Kansas City, no. Blue Springs, where Jason Lisk, Brandon Lloyd, David Cook, Ladell Betts, and Jon Sundvold went to school.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:03 PM
If that happens, I honestly thing many will be more relieved than anything. But the Jags will beat us there.
Couple years away at the very least.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
KC Resident: The lead graph lost me.
The Kansas football season died here on Thursday night, and now the only hope is that the program isn’t dead, too.
Holy shit. It is the first year of a new coach taking over for a program that has little to no talent (certainly no experienced talent). Was the loss abysmal? Totally, but why don’t you calm down a bit. In Pelini’s first year at Nebraska, the Huskers lost (at home) to Missouri 52-17 and on the road to Oklahoma 62-28. It’s not the program died on those nights.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:04 PM
We”ve also got one guy who was (dubiously in my opinion) selected to the Hall of Fame in Joiner,
when he retired, he was the NFL’s all time leader in receptions, and maybe yards, and played AFL and NFL. I wouldn’t go yanking him out of there too quickly.
Obviously his stats don’t hold up against about 40 current guys, but I remember (vividly, because i was little) that he was really good with the Chargers.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Nope, just a University of Michigan football guy.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Wasn’t Irving Fryar a #1 overall pick? It took him that long to even get to 1000 yards? Yeesh.
Hey Lisk, another thing to throw on your to-do list if you’d like: debunking/proving the Alvin Harper Myth, where a big money free agent WR almost always sucks after switching teams. See also: Peerless Price, Bernard Berrian, etc
October 15th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Have you converted to Mecksianity yet?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:05 PM

Since I don’t live in MN anymore, I have often wondered how my allegiance to this team would go. Then I remember that I live in DC and there is no way that I could become a Skins fan.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Any chance you could write about CFB as well Mr. Lisk?
he’s for a 264 team playoff
October 15th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
I refuse to believe ahmad rashad has ever been good at anything
October 15th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
Who are “Three people who have never been in my kitchen”?
Clavin FTW – this almost ended Jeopardy as we know it. So many possibilities.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:06 PM
I think Lisk has been pretty damn awesome so far, but I’m not sure I want more posts that are stats based. College football is too wide open (teams playing different teams and such) for stats to be used like they are in the NFL posts when the playing field is much more level. Though I bet Lisk would have SC ranked, though.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:08 PM
God no. The Mexi-God is a good game manager at this stage. I don’t think the Jets could beat Bal or Pitt with him at QB, but he has played very well when compared to last season. He is still the weakest link for the Jets on offense though.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:08 PM
Cotton Bowl is #2.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:09 PM
One too many ‘though’s’.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:10 PM
You’ll have time to repent this season. Accept him into your life soon, though. Don’t want to be caught across the border on Judgment Day.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:10 PM
The Perriman can.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:11 PM
Thumbs way up on Lisk. Would like to see more numbers-based stuff in other sports, though I agree CFB doesn’t lend itself that well to that kinda’ stuff.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
The most shocking thing about that article was that Mellinger thinks the Holiday Bowl sucks and that Kansas State will somehow be playing in it.
Yeah, he took a few subtle jabs at KSU in the column. I was confused by that.
Huskerdawg – Dude, I’m calm. Just pointing out the media is saying. That was damn near a hatchet column on Gill.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
I have never, ever heard the name Mervyn Fernandez
October 15th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
Fabian Brunnstrom on waivers
October 15th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
I was talking more about the frequency and quality of his posts more than taking his stats approach directly to CFB.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
KC Res: That article was pretty fucking terrible, actually. I couldn’t care less if Gill succeeds at Kansas, but to say “the program died” is just stupid. He glosses over the fact that Gill took over for a team that went 1-7 in the B12 and lost every player worth a damn from that team.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Lisk’s writing & presentation are as mediocre as his research is awesome. Every post leaves me wanting to crucify his brutal leads, his poor economy of word and high school newspaper style. That said, I read his posts routinely b/c I like the research. If he focuses on maybe writing less and improving his overall style, he’d be on the fast-track to a column somewhere. I know this is a blog and not an AP newsroom, but his leads are brutal. See above. If he continues, the site will have to re-name itself.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:14 PM
Oh, it was most certainly a hatchet job. He went after him hard. Seems very premature to me, but I thought Gill taking the Kansas job was a mistake anyway.
True. Mr. Lisk seems to pump out well-crafted posts on the reg.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
Sweet lord, remove the stick.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
Calmer than you are
October 15th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
he’s for a 264 team playoff
That would be pretty cool to see once.
/ducks.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
I was talking more about the frequency and quality of his posts
you want Lisk to put up 3 Denard Robinson for Heisman posts a week?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:15 PM
Wow, scripty.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:17 PM
This lead was weak, but I’m not coming to a blog to get great leads…I’m coming for the discussions within the posts. Maybe I’m alone in that regard.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:17 PM
Well he had Marc Wilson, Vince Evans, Steve Beurlein, Jay Schroeder, and Todd Marinovich throwing to him. It is hard to shine in the shadow of such legendary passers.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:17 PM
You’re definitely not alone in that regard.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
That made me lol.
Actually, we were looking for guilt ridden Kellen Moore for Heisman posts.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:18 PM
TBL could write the greatest lead ever for a post about some chick who’s banging some NY athlete while wearing a hat, but I could care less. I’d rather talk about football in the comments of this post.

October 15th, 2010 at 2:19 PM
In Duffy’s defense, we CFB fans are the most bitchy and his team is not terrible for the first time in a while. Those two facts created the perfect storm I’m afraid.

So was Billy Howton (career leader in rec and yards), and he’s not in the Hall. I’m not a fan of compilers versus studs. Joiner was a second receiver type on teams that threw alot. He was the clear #2 in Cincinnati behind Isaac Curtis, and then was the top receiver in San Diego for two years, til John Jefferson arrived. Then, he was behind Jefferson/Winslow and Chandler/Winslow. He made 3 pro bowls for his career. He hung around a long time as a #2 WR.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:21 PM
I should clarify – #2 WRs on teams with star #1 WRs that sign free agent deals and supposedly flop. Distant cousin to “lets sign that team’s backup QB to huge money after three starts!” (Scott Mitchell, Rob Johnson, Matt Schaub, Elvis Grbac, etc)
October 15th, 2010 at 2:22 PM
I was hoping scripty would have a link to his website. I’m curious to check out his writing talents now.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:23 PM
charlie joiner – field stretcher. He averaged 18 yards a catch for his career, and when he retired, he was thousands of yards ahead of anybody else in terms of career yardage.
I can’t say anything about the Cincinnati years, because I would have only been tiny. But he was a serious weapon on a team full of weapons in San Diego.
If you want to yank him out, please, please get Steve Largent out too.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:23 PM
I was hoping scripty would have a link to his website. I’m curious to check out his writing talents now.
I have a feeling we just saw his audition.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:23 PM
As long as the two groups can be distinguished empirically, I’m alright with this. Not big on the terms “compilers” and “studs”, though.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:24 PM

He hung around a long time as a #2 WR.
Lynn Swann, #2 receiver. John Taylor, #2 receiver. It’s possible to be a really good player and be a number 2 receiver. Reggie Wayne was a #2 receiver for about 6 years.
That’s not a fair criticism.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:26 PM
Surely that critique isn’t banhammer-worthy. It was a bit harsh, but it wasn’t unfair. Now, if he has thrown the Mexi-God under the bus…now we’re talking banhammer.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:26 PM
I thought there were a lot of compliments in there: 1) I read his posts. 2) His research is awesome. 3)If he matures as a writer, I’d think his writing would be worthy of top outlet. Having worked for a newspaper, NCAA & pro sports PR teams, I think anyone sticking their name to a byline is usually looking to improve as a writer. This was mainly in response to people seeking more of his work, and my opinion to see less of it – albeit – seeing the work improved (i.e. less is more). For all the Weak Store shoppers out there that can’t handle a little honest feedback – Faga Beefe.

See, I agree with this myself, so I’m not upset at all. I need to be more concise, and I hope that I evolve to do that. It’s always a balancing act between explaining too much, and not enough, especially when dealing with numbers as part of the writing. It would be easier to write more concisely if I had more time (alas, this is not my sole job), because I know in my real work, my first draft was often longer than my final, as I usually edited. In blogging, I often have more first draft type stuff where I write freely.

Jason Lisk,
Do a post where you get to yank five guys out of the hall of fame, but no more than one at any position. Or did you already do that one?

I disagree. Depends both on the shirt and the person.
I have to cover up the hideous scar.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
My only criticism with your posts would be that they need more dicks.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
just because Lisk doesn’t think you suck doesnt’ mean you don’t suck, scripty. Because you suck.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:34 PM
This isn’t the fucking New Yorker.
And that wins line of and understatement of th day.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:35 PM

From when they removed your heart and made you a soulless robot?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:37 PM
obviously not journalism.
If not, big ups to you. Better to have a useful degree than this piece of construction paper I have.
I’m not sure I use mine anymore than you. I have a Biology degree with loads of Chemistry as well. I also have a J.D., where we did learn writing in terms of arguments and issues. I also hung out with the J majors in school (roomed with 2) because they were way more fun than science types.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:37 PM
Lisk, are you a baseball fan. It’s usually baseball nerds that are this hung up on numbers.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:39 PM

Where do you live now? Did you goto MU?

October 15th, 2010 at 2:39 PM
I appreciate any and all criticism.
Lisk – the anti-Duffy
I don’t know if these are criticisms of myself or Duffy, but if we are stylistic different, that’s part of the good thing going here. I wouldn’t want to read nothing but me, that’s for damn sure.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:40 PM
What’s your sign?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:40 PM
just because Lisk doesn’t think you suck doesnt’ mean you don’t suck, scripty. Because you suck.
Man, for how Dirt is going have after scripty, you would think scripty is a huge Martin Mull fan or something.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:40 PM
Instead of an interview with Dan Wetzel where we already know what the answer to every question is going to be how’s about a “Get to Know Lisk” interview post
October 15th, 2010 at 2:40 PM
I don’t doubt this. I started off in college as a football player but moved to sports/entertainment writing soon after and the journalism people, while far dorkier, always threw the best parties and were likely to be the ones carrying sprite bottles of vodka to class.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
Clay, what can you tell me about Michael Hamlin?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
Totally agree. I could write out what Wetzel will say to TBLs questions and get most of them dead on.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
The iconic Colonel Mustard.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
Things are getting a little friendly in here, thinking there might be a few extra eHarmony searches for Jason Lisk.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
Jason Lisk,
Do a post where you get to yank five guys out of the hall of fame, but no more than one at any position. Or did you already do that one?
I might look into this, tabled for next week.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
They’re criticisms of Duffy, who tends to call commenters in his posts “morons” and uses the word “fucking” as an adjective when he’s angry.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:42 PM
I resent this statement.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:43 PM

Fuckin’ comments. Nobody fuckin’ reads them anyway.

shhh. I love jason lisk, but I don’t want him to know. And it’s not like this is the first time scripty has sucked on here. He’s just not here that much. He once made fun of that Iranian woman who got shot and killed, but he did it on the morning she got shot and killed.
Luckily his job keeps him out of here most of the time.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:44 PM
I have a Bio degree as well, my minor was Marine Science. I have yet to meet another Biology major not in med school that ended up using his/her degree. I went to rgad school for something completely different.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:44 PM
Do you resent this as a baseball traditionalist??
What are your opinion on Ryan Howard’s contract??
October 15th, 2010 at 2:44 PM

Save the bile for cornholio.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:45 PM
I’m a big fan of Lisk. I was really worried that the new NFL guy was going to be someone brought in simply to grovel for page views by taking contrarian stances on everything and throwing NFL players under the bus in headlines. But his stuff is great.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:46 PM
I used to load up a 64 oz mug with beer and go to class on Friday’s. I would also borrow my roommates dugout. I loved college like TBL love’s Favre dong in a hat.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:46 PM
But.. but…. /team cap?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:46 PM
I’m guessing it wasn’t for typing.

a suburb of Kansas City; yes, worked for Mizzou football team when we literally won zero road games, but got to travel to lots of cool places and party with my $25 road game stipend; a beard, flannel shirt, and nothing else. Oh wait, also a white t-shirt.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:47 PM
As a guy with a BS in Chemistry, I agree wholeheartedly. We’re boring
October 15th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
We’ve heard.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
Clay, what can you tell me about Michael Hamlin?
that he lost his job on a team with no good safeties. That he’s not a good special teams player, and that I’m glad Dallas cut him. And that I need to stop reading Cowboy blogs in the preseason, because I was lied to about this guy and every linebacker named Williams on the cowboys roster.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:48 PM
no hat!?!?!?!?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:49 PM
But.. but…. /team cap?
I had to move on (I spend part of my time at S&F now).
I like it when the guy who writes about football watches the games, so I’m still on team Cap. What I don’t like is hearing from people who only watch Red Zone.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:50 PM
Egads. Boom, I’m roasted.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
What happened to artie lange? I miss his detailed, thought-provoking picks.
If webster one day decides to allow phrases to be included in their dictionary, “mailing it in” should just have his fat face next to it. What a bad idea that was.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
Training camp is full of glory and guys who are “in the best shape of their life”. You can drive yourself crazy with that shit. It’s probably worse for offenses than defenses, though. Offenses always look unstoppable in training camp to beat writers and bloggers.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:51 PM
Save the bile for cornholio.
that guy is no good either. As if wedding photographer isn’t a people business. Everybody that won’t pay him and that wants to meet more than once is being an asshole. It’s their wedding, and that shit is expensive.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:52 PM
that he lost his job on a team with no good safeties.
Well, he is coming to a team that is probably worse at safety. Guessing they give him a look see on the PS for a couple weeks.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:52 PM

I’d spend more time at s&f if I understood the layout of the site better. It confuses me with its categories and boxes and suchlike.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:53 PM
In fairness, Artie would only remember he promised to do it while he was taking trips into the neighborhood to see his bookie and his dealer. Not a lot of time to put thoughts together.
And seriously, I think every one of those picks was sent via text message.

I find it’s best to wait for Sparty to Tweet a new post and follow that link
/Free Sparty

I agree with this. Every time I stop by I feel a bit overwhelmed by the home page.

You’re an effing internet moniker to me.

most likely true, somewhat true, completely erroneous, “luckily” is untrue, last part – not true. Yes my work restricts blog access but I read all the posts via Feedburner, JUST HOPING you’ll make some witty observation that adds to the conversation.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:57 PM
Huh?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:59 PM
Huh?
he was just agreeing that he sucked
October 15th, 2010 at 2:59 PM
Honestly, how difficult is the S&F homepage to understand? Top box in the middle rotates the 5 most recent posts, then they all appear underneath that. On the right, there’s a recent comment box, a recent posts box, a most popular box, and a tags box. Should be pretty easy to figure out.
October 15th, 2010 at 3:02 PM
? Top box in the middle
I stand corrected.
October 15th, 2010 at 3:02 PM
Again, I do stop by there and this is just constructive criticism because — like TST — I would like to stop by more often.
But you shouldn’t have to think about a webpage. Even a little.
October 15th, 2010 at 3:02 PM
Should be pretty easy to figure out.
it’s very busy, that’s for sure.
October 15th, 2010 at 3:03 PM
As a newcomer who stumbled onto the site recently, I don’t like the layout of s&f either, and perhaps as a result rarely frequent the site.
October 15th, 2010 at 3:04 PM
the hell? you open the page, start at the top for newer posts and scroll down for the older posts. the box at the top is just scrolling through recent posts. capice?
October 15th, 2010 at 3:05 PM
You’re an effing internet moniker to me.

While the quality of writing is superior, I find the layout to be dull, pedantic, and overly busy. Sparty and Friends should change its name to “Poor Web Layout”.
/scripty.
October 15th, 2010 at 3:08 PM
well, sounds like S&F needs a new layout. I’ll bring this up at Saturday’s staff meeting in Gainesville.
October 15th, 2010 at 3:10 PM
I’m not in love with the layout over there, but I don’t find it terribly difficult to navigate. Then again, I rarely visit the homepage, and once I’m in a post, I use the recent comments/recent posts box in the upper right.

Blue Springs, MO would have to be the city in question… By the way, Brandon Lloyd probably the most amazing Highschool track athlete Ive ever seen. Seen him high jump 7 feet 3in, long jump 25ft, win the 110 HH, and win the 100 meter….all in the same track meet.
