The Yankees are talking to the Miami Marlins about a potential trade for starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, according to a report Sunday in The Athletic. They might have some competition.

While Ken Rosenthal and Chris Kirschner report that no deal was “close” as of Sunday morning, the reports suggest there’s at least some fire beneath the smoke. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants are also “believed (to be) interested” in Cabrera.

Meanwhile, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports the New York Mets “have shown interest” in Cabrera, in addition to the Yankees and Cubs. The Houston Astros and Baltimore Orioles also asked the Marlins about Cabrera, according to Jackson, though their interest might have waned.

Cabrera made 26 starts for the Marlins in 2025. The 27-year-old right-hander posted a 3.53 ERA and reached career-highs in innings (137.2), strikeouts (150), and wins (8).

Cabrera isn’t the only starting pitcher the Yankees are targeting in trade talks. They have also continued to discuss Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta, according to The Athletic.

Cabrera is under team control for three more years. The Marlins, who surprised with a third-place finish in the National League East last year, might not be motivated to trade Cabrera anytime soon.

The Yankees have a deep farm system, and could benefit from added rotation depth while Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt rehabilitate from elbow surgeries. That makes them a decent match for Cabrera, but the Marlins are in position to drive a hard bargain.
