The NFL’s Tennessee Titans provided an update Friday, Oct. 2, on running back Tyjae Spears as they prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4.

Spears, who is dealing with an ankle injury, returned to practice in a limited capacity. However, Titans head coach Robert Saleh said the 25-year-old still has to “clear some hurdles” before his availability for Sunday’s game can be determined.

That leaves Spears’ status uncertain heading into the weekend, although Saleh’s comments appeared to provide some encouragement for the running back’s chances of playing.

Spears was also listed as questionable before Tennessee’s Week 3 matchup with the New York Giants but ultimately suited up. His involvement was limited, however, as he recorded just three carries for five yards in the Titans’ 12-7 loss.

Through three games in 2026, Spears has 13 carries for 58 rushing yards and has yet to score a touchdown. He has also contributed in the passing game, catching four of six targets for 41 yards.

The Titans will need to monitor Spears closely over the next few days before making a final decision on his status. The fourth-year running back had a difficult 2025 campaign, recording career lows in carries and rushing yards. He finished with 72 carries for 283 yards and two touchdowns across 13 games.

Pollard could see bigger role

If Spears is unable to play, Tennessee has another experienced option in Tony Pollard. Pollard returned to practice Thursday without limitations after receiving a maintenance day Wednesday.

Pollard is also dealing with a foot issue, meaning the Titans’ backfield could be something to watch closely when Sunday arrives.

Tennessee enters Week 4 still searching for its first victory of the season at 0-3. The Titans will face a Baltimore team that has started the year 2-1, making the matchup an important opportunity for Tennessee to get its season moving in a better direction.

Whether Spears can contribute could play a role in that effort. For now, his return to limited practice is a positive development, but the Titans still have hurdles to clear before knowing whether their running back will be available Sunday.

The Titans visit the Ravens at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on CBS.
