The Boston Red Sox saw their promising season come to a disappointing end in the American League Wild Card round, getting swept by the New York Yankees in two games at Yankee Stadium.
Boston’s offense could not find its footing in either of the two games, and the Red Sox were outscored 18-2 in the series. The Red Sox’s season ended with a whimper, and the team was sent home after recording just seven hits in two games.

Prior to the Wild Card series, Boston had put together an encouraging regular season, finishing the year with an 87-75 record that included a 15-game winning streak in July that tied a franchise record.
Now just days after their elimination, the Red Sox announced news regarding the health of breakout catcher Mickey Gasper. Gasper missed the entire Wild Card series after tearing his right distal biceps tendon off the bone on September 25.

The Red Sox initially placed him on the 10-day IL, but further imaging later revealed the extent of the tear, ending his season and leaving him off the playoff roster. Chris Cotillo of MassLive shared on X that Gasper underwent successful surgery to repair his distal biceps tendon.
The timing of this injury was especially unfortunate for Gasper and the Red Sox, given that the 30-year-old had put together the best season of his MLB career.
He appeared in 67 games this season, slashing .251/.357/.466 (.823 OPS) with 10 home runs.
The Road Back

The focus now shifts to Gasper’s recovery post-surgery. This injury typically requires a lengthy recovery process, with Gasper likely facing a timeline of four to six months before he can return to live game action.
While the Red Sox would be thrilled if he were ready for opening day of the 2027 season, his status is largely uncertain, and the team will likely take a cautious approach to his rehabilitation.
Although the injury was a frustrating end to a career-changing season, Gasper should have the opportunity to build on his breakout when he returns next season for Boston.
