Josh Innes, a white sports talk radio personality on Philadelphia’s WIP, had a conversation with Hollis Thomas (who’s black) about Eagles center Jason Kelce (who’s white) attending Doug Pederson’s introductory press conference. Innes said that he was watching a movie about Malcolm X at an airport, and came across the term house negro, an inflammatory title referring to a slave who coddled up to the master and therefore got to live in the house, and felt it applied to Kelce.
The audio (below) was originally pulled by Philadelphia sports blog Crossing Broad proprietor Kyle Scott, who also transcribed the full exchange. Speaking extemporaneously on live radio or television can be quite difficult, but this was a pretty bizarre (and in my opinion inappropriate) comparison for Innes to make. (Aside from the racial dynamics, Kelce was a Pro Bowl alternate this season who presumably wouldn’t need to be sucking up to the new boss to keep his job.)
