Villanova wasted a chance to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament by losing to lowly Seton Hall 64-63, on a brilliant step-back jumper by Sterling Gibbs at the buzzer. As you can see, the game-winner was very Kemba Walker-ish.
Seton Hall grabbed a 1-point lead on a Jaren Sina corner 3-pointer with :17 left (see below), but Villanova’s Darrun Hilliard answered with a floater in the lane with :07 left, setting up the Gibbs heroics.
Villanova, which entered 28-3, shot woefully in the first half and trailed by 15. It surged to the lead with a 13-0 run midway through the second half, but Seton Hall gamely rallied and held off the cold Wildcats (37 percent shooting, 21 percent on three-pointers).
The loss knocks the Wildcats to a No. 2 or 3 seed – depending on what else happens over the next four days – and opens the door for Michigan, Duke or Louisville to join Florida, Wichita State and Arizona as a top seed. Kansas, will plays Oklahoma State shortly, still has an outside shot at getting on the top line.
Seton Hall’s season is extended another day. The Pirates will play the winner of St. John’s and Providence tomorrow afternoon at MSG.
