By the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s Philadelphia-San Francisco game, umpire Bob Davidson had heard quite enough from one verbose Phillies fan. So he simply stopped play, strolled over to the third-base line and ejected the patron.
The umpire told a pool reporter that the fan was repeatedly yelling a sexual innuendo and telling the Giants players that they “suck.”
“That’s when I turned around and said ‘You know what, get rid of this guy.’ You could have your wife, girlfriend, kids – they buy tickets,” Davidson said. “They don’t have to come here and listen to that.”
“And people cheered me. Which is unusual in this town for me,” Davidson said.
The Phillies said the fan left on his own accord after being confronted by security personnel and wasn’t formally ejected. To be fair, it seems like it would have been a bit uncomfortable for him to stay after the incident.
Davidson ejected an inebriated Brewers fan for shouting a homophobic slur at Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina in 2010. He runs a tight ship.
