Richard Sherman Attributes New NFL Illegal Contact Emphasis to Fantasy Football, Money

Ryan Glasspiegel

Richard Sherman did an interview with Josh Elliott on NBC’s Sunday Night Football, and the Seahawks cornerback was asked if he thought the new emphasis on illegal contact was aimed at Seattle’s secondary. After dismissing that idea, Sherman said, “When the fantasy football numbers need to be what they need to be, then the league needs to do what it needs to do to get it done. This is a money-driven league, so whatever sells the tickets is gonna sell the tickets.”

The Boston Globe’s Christopher Gasper has also theorized that illegal contact is being emphasized with fantasy football as an ulterior motive; whether it’s that, or a belief amongst NFL management that fans have a predilection for greater scoring in general, the league risks teetering on the brink of making defense nearly impossible if the real games are indeed called as the preseason ones have been.
