Nike has suspended its relationship with Maria Sharapova after she acknowledged failing a drug test at the Australian Open in January. The offending drug was meldonium which the WADA banned at the beginning of 2016. The five-time Grand Slam winner said she’s had a prescription for meldonium for 10 years.
“We are saddened and surprised by the news about Maria Sharapova,” Nike said in a statement. “We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues. We will continue to monitor the situation.”
Sharapova re-upped with Nike in 2010 with an 8-year, $70 million deal. Forbes cited her as the highest-paid female athlete in the world for 2015.
