Female HS Basketball Player Suspended Five Games for Tweeting WI Athletic Association to Eat S**t

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association sent an email to member schools asking for student sections to tone down their chants. April Gehl, a student at Hilbert High School, screenshotted it with a terse response:

Per the Post Crescent, Gehl (a three-sport athlete) was suspended for five games during this basketball season for the tweet. The school’s athletic director Stan Diedrich and WIAA’s communication director Todd Clark provided a pretty bureaucratic explanation:

“I can tell you that the WIAA contacted me with information,” Diedrich said. “Once given the information, we dealt with the matter in accordance with board policy.”

Clark said in an email Friday to Post-Crescent Media that April Gehl’s tweet was brought to the attention of the WIAA. The school was then informed.

“To be clear, there was no language in our correspondence with the school that stated to ‘take care of this,'” Clark said. “That determination is for the member school to address. But these issues, like other sportsmanship issues brought to our attention, are shared with our members for their awareness.”

A senior forward, Gehl is the 7-3 team’s leading scorer (15.8 ppg) and rebounder (5.5 rpg). Though she thought the punishment was “ridiculous,” she apparently doesn’t plan to appeal. As you can see above, she hasn’t taken down the tweet.
