England lost 2-1 to Japan in the Women’s World Cup semifinals after defender Laura Bassett tried to break up a pass and wound up kicking it in her own goal. It goes without saying that this is a brutal way for England to get sent home, and one feels especially terrible for Bassett at this moment.
