Many NBA rosters underwent major changes this offseason. Some teams made moves that pushed them into playoff contention, while others took a step backward and shifted their focus toward the future. With most teams having finalized their rosters, the Detroit Pistons are one of the few teams still facing an important decision before the season begins.
The Pistons are coming off a spectacular season in which they finished first in the Eastern Conference. However, one of the key players behind their success has yet to sign a contract extension.

The holdup

Jalen Duren, the Pistons’ starting center, had an impressive regular season, earning All-NBA Third Team honors. That gave Duren the opportunity to sign a max extension worth up to five years and $287 million.
But Duren’s production dropped significantly once the playoffs began. He went from averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds during the regular season to 10 points and eight rebounds in the postseason. That decline has made Detroit hesitant to commit to a massive contract.
The Pistons are reportedly willing to offer Duren a five-year, $35 million deal, but Duren and his camp believe his regular-season performance earned him a max contract. Neither side appears willing to budge, creating a stalemate between the team and its starting center.
What’s next

If the two sides can’t reach an agreement, Duren has two options. He could be included in a sign-and-trade or accept a $9.6 million qualifying offer that would make him a free agent in 2027.
However, the Pistons have reportedly told Duren and his camp that they will not include him in a sign-and-trade. That leaves Duren with one option if the two sides can’t agree: signing the $9.6 million qualifying offer.
Duren and the Pistons have until Sept. 30 to reach an agreement. Although they have said they won’t trade him, he could force their hand if he continues to play hardball.
