The big question for New York is the availability of captain Aaron Judge, who injured his calf on Sept. 16 after missing much of the season with a rib injury. Judge took batting practice on Monday, and a decision on his roster status for the series remained up in the air. The Yankees, who got an extra day off when Sunday’s season finale was rained out, also face decisions on slugger Giancarlo Stanton and left-hander Ryan Weathers ahead of the series.
The Red Sox recovered from a poor start to finish 77-58 under Chad Tracy, who replaced Alex Cora as interim manager in April and earned the permanent gig in September. Despite being limited to 130 games, Willson Contreras led the club with 27 homers and 81 RBI, slashing .275/.386/.516, while Wilyer Abreu led the AL with 38 doubles to go with 24 home runs and a .773 OPS.
Right-hander Cam Schlittler starts Game 1 for the Yankees after posting a 1.95 ERA and 0.919 WHIP with 239 strikeouts in 33 starts and 193.2 innings. Rookie left-hander Payton Tolle gets the assignment for Boston after working to a 3.03 ERA and 1.096 WHIP in 148.2 innings over 26 starts, striking out 171.
