Atlanta came from behind against the beleagured Phillies bullpen for a 5-3 victory in Game 1 on Tuesday. Austin Riley cranked a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Braves the lead after Philadelphia had claimed the edge in the top of the seventh. Ozzie Albies gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead in the sixth with an RBI triple and the Braves’ bullpen produced 2.2 scoreless innings after starter Chris Sale faltered.
J.T. Realmuto shot a two-run triple into the right-field corner in the top of the seventh off Sale, who was 4-0 against Philadelphia during the regular season. But closer Jhoan Duran, who came on in the seventh, coughed up the lead. The Phillies’ bullpen posted an MLB-worst 5.79 ERA in September as the team staggered to the finish line, finally clinching a playoff spot on Sunday.
The Braves have lost three times to the Phillies in the postseason, including back-to-back NL Division series losses in 2022 and 2023. Right-hander Tyler Mahle, who went 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA and 0.957 WHIP in nine starts and 54.1 for Atlanta after coming from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline, starts Game 2 while Philadelphia gives the ball to left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, who led the majors with 18 wins while putting up a 2.91 ERA and 1.203 WHIP with 231 strikeouts in 207 innings.
