Another new era gets underway for Stanford on Saturday when Tavita Pritchard takes his old team out at home to Hawaii in his head coaching debut. The former Cardinal quarterback has returned to California following a two-and-a-half-year stint on the Washington Commanders staff after Frank Reich’s disappointing 4-8 season as interim coach last year.
This will be the first time these programs have faced one another in successive seasons, and it just so happens the Rainbow Warriors clinched their first win in this rivalry when the teams faced off almost exactly 12 months ago. This will also be the first time the schools have faced off at Stanford Stadium, with every one of their five meetings to date taking place in The Aloha State.
Fifth-year head coach Timmy Chang watched as Kanzei Matsuzawa kicked a buzzer-beating field goal (one of three that day) to beat Stanford in last year’s season-opener. Hawaii is a 5.5-point underdog to repeat those heroics in enemy territory this time around, which makes sense given UH lost three of five road games last year en route to finishing 9-4, the most wins it has earned since 2019.
Of Hawaii’s eight returning starters, sophomore quarterback Micah Alejado has a surge of excitement around his name after earning All-Mountain West honors and placing eighth nationally in passing yards per game (282.4) last year. Meanwhile, Davis Warren has taken the starting quarterback berth for Stanford after transferring from Michigan, where he missed all of last season following a torn ACL.
