Left-hander Haden Smith set the tone with three shutout innings as the opener, and Colton Montgomery homered in the win. The White Sox got on the board in the first on a sacrifice fly from Munetaka Murakami before Sam Antonacci drove in two runs with a second-inning single. Montgomery’s bomb in the fourth made it a 4-0 game, and Chase Meidroth chased home Murakami with an infield single in the fifth.
Opener AJ Blubaugh walked three and recorded just two outs in the first, allowing an unearned run, and the Astros had just six hits on the night. Nelson Velázquez got Houston on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, and Jeremy Peña made it a 6-3 game when he scored on an error in the eighth. The Astros used eight pitchers, including closer Josh Hader in the ninth.
Right-hander Hunter Brown starts as Houston tries to stay alive in Game 2. He worked to a 3.19 ERA and 1.267 WHIP, striking out 124 in 107.1 innings over 20 starts. The White Sox give the ball to right-hander Sean Burke, who struck out 185 batters in 172.1 innings while pitching to a 3.34 ERA and 1.195 WHIP in 32 appearances with 27 starts.
