The final season of Game of Thrones is underway. As we all gather together to figure this all out, here are five thoughts on the season 8 premiere:

Something seemed up between Jon and Arya

The most troubling scene comes from a split second when Jon and Arya reunited. Clearly, Jon did not get the response he was hoping for from the sister that has always been on his side after saying Sansa thinks she is smarter than everyone else. Arya oddly defended his sister cryptically enough that gave off the vibe she may have some sort of trust concerns with Jon: “I’m defending our family.” Now, this did come before a hug, so we may not have to choose between them, but this is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

This could be a love story

Perhaps Jon finding out he is a Targaryen was a hint this isn’t true (more on that later), but it has to be brought up. Part of the brilliance of Game of Thrones comes from never really knowing what the story is about or whose story this truly is. Combining the way Daenerys and Jon looked and acted toward each other last season with the scene of them flying their dragons in this episode, there is now just enough evidence to believe this could be a love story. Not to mention, Daenerys brought up the idea of the two hiding for thousands of years alone (in the cold). Not sure how the fans would react if this whole thing ends like Twilight, but don’t rule it out.

Cersei

Cersei remains the most dangerous person alive and her reaction to the Army of the Dead is frightening. “Good” was the sole word she uttered upon learning they broke through the wall and are traveling South. Maybe she is not letting anyone know her fears, but it has to be wondered if she is simply okay with everyone – that includes herself – dying. It is not out of the realm of possibility for her to wish that at this point. We don’t even know if she really is pregnant or if she was just using that to get her brother, or brothers, to do what she wanted.

Look, she knows deep down she isn’t walking away the winner of either of these wars.

Aegon Targaryen vs. Jon Snow

Finally, Jon Snow has learned the truth. He is Aegon Targaryen. If anyone has made us believe they would turn down sitting on the Iron Throne, it has been Jon. And while that was how he first reacted to Samwell telling him he is heir, the look on his face told a different story. Jon, Aegon, I mean, looked awfully bothered finding out what his queen had done to Samwell’s family. In addition, that same look appeared on his face hearing his friend tell him he should rule the Seven Kingdoms. The Great War has been his focus, but maybe, just maybe he will want and demand more when it is over. Remember, he learned that Ned, the most honorable man he has ever known, lied to protect him. Could a lie to protect his family be brewing?

A lot was set up in a good episode

Those that were hoping and expecting season 8 to come out swinging with fire, blood, and death are undoubtedly disappointed right now. Sure, it would have been cool to see a little more action, but this episode set us up for a thrilling final five episodes. It did everything it needed to do. We are left with tons of hints and feelings after watching the premiere. We didn’t even get to the look on Jaime Lannister’s face after seeing Bran, Sansa vs. Daenerys, and the Night Kings’ message, which has have major ramifications. The end is near, folks, enjoy the episodes while they are here. This one deserves an A-.
