Minor League Team Loses After Hitting Bases-Loaded, Walk-Off Single in Bottom of the 9th [Video]

The Great Lakes Loons beat the Lansing Lugnuts in a Midwest League 10-inning thriller Monday featuring one of the most bizarre finishes you’ll hear about in 2013. The Loons victory came after the Lugnuts appeared to win on a bases loaded, walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th inning. Lansing’s Chris Hawkins singled up the middle with the bases loaded, scoring what should have been the game-winning run. As the Lugnuts celebrated, the umpires spoke with the managers at home plate. The umpires met and then held a conference with both managers. They ruled that Santiago Nessy, the Lansing runner on first base, celebrated with his teammates and never touched second base, making it a forceout at second base for the third out, negating the game-winning run.

Matt Shelton, who was making his first relief appearance for the Loons this season, went from loser to winner when the Loons scored the winning run in the top of the 10th on a pinch-hit single by Leo Rodriguez.
