Roger Federer, who has won Wimbledon seven times, lost in the second round. He was defeated by someone named Serhiy Stakhovsky, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6. Stakhovsky hails from the Ukraine. Enter “not weak and feeble!” line here. It is the first time in 36 (!) Grand Slam events Federer has not reached the quarters of a Grand Slam.

Also, Maria Sharapova, who everyone hoped would meet Serena Williams in the final, lost to Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal, 6-3, 6-4.

Less significant than those two defeats: Ana Ivanovic lost 6-3, 6-3, and her opponent isn’t really relevant. What is relevant is that tennis observers really need Ivanovic to return to her 2007/2008 form when she advanced to the semifinals or greater in three Majors. She won the French Open in 2008.
