Russ was a really good player in college but he was a reach at #1. Dallas traded up for Rocket Ismail who then took the big $ from Bruce McNall to play in Toronto. Maryland actually played alongside Cortez and there was no point at which anybody ever logically thought he was the better of the two.

Jerome Brown is #1 forever. Warren Sapp and Tez Kennedy are on that next level with Wilfork.

We often only remember success in the pros, but Russell Maryland was a straight beast in college. First overall pick if I’m not mistaken.

It’s not his fault he had an offense that couldn’t stay on the field, and eventually the Canes defense wore down. But for 3/4 of that game he dominated the Huskers line enough to clearly be the best lineman on the field. I remember one play where he put one of the Husker star offensive linemen straight on his back with a bull rush. You could hear him hit the ground on tv.
