Shabazz Muhammad Sounds Like the Next Todd Marinovich
The Los Angeles Times has an explosive story on UCLA Freshman Shabazz Muhammad and his father, Ron Holmes. Holmes makes Marv Marinovich, the former USC football player who basically raised his son Todd to be a professional athlete, look disorganized and uncalculating. Holmes, like Marinovich, also played collegiate sports at USC (as a basketball player in the early 80′s).
According to the story, Holmes was fascinated with thoroughbred breeding, and even commented to a friend when he first saw his wife, a track athlete and basketball player at Long Beach State, that they would make All-Americans together. He even picked his children’s names based on what would sound good and be marketable. Much of his life has been devoted to manipulating and navigating through big time sports for his son, Shabazz, working the system to gain every advantage.
Included among those is the most shocking revelation of the piece: Shabazz Muhammad is older. The UCLA media guide lists him as 19, with a date of birth of Nov. 13, 1993. The Times found birth records that show he is exactly one year older, a 20 year old freshman. When confronted with this information, Holmes initially denied it, then admitted it, but questioned the newsworthiness to the reporter. He then sent the following text to the reporter:
“Bazz is going to blow up in the NBA lets team up and blow this thing up!!! I’m going to need a publicist anyway why shouldn’t it be you. We can do some big things together.”
Holmes also carefully handled the PR around his son’s suspension, and leaking information that called into question the NCAA’s evenhandedness when Shabazz was suspended back in November.
It’s an amazing piece of reporting. The biggest news is the age thing. Shabazz is the same age as many juniors playing this year, and the family appears to have hidden or misrepresented that fact in elevating his status. Buyer Beware, NBA General Managers.

Stupid question: is Muhammad the middle or last name of either of his parents?

buyer beware? not for his age, his ability
this is not the same as latin baseball players being many years older. 19 or 20? no biggie

A few years later, the couple converted to Islam and changed their names. Paige became Faye Muhammad; Holmes tried several handles, including Ronald Muhammad, Ron Shabazz and Rashad Muhammad.
Court records show that Holmes used numerous aliases over the years but agreed to stick to his birth name as part of a 2000 probation agreement.

Pretty underwhelming in the UCLA games I’ve seen. If he played for BYU though no one would give a fuck.

Big East just as much of a culprit. Really the only B1G team that’s to blame is Wisky. Indiana, Michigan and Michigan State are among the five most exciting teams to watch that play real basketball.

Really? I think he’s very good. He’ll be a pretty good complimentary player in the pros, maybe he even good enough to trick a bad team into giving him a max contract at some point.

Maybe I’ve just seen his bad games…totally possible. But Pac-12 tourney championship I thought he played very selfishly, and I think only the Missouri game I saw UCLA play did I think he looked like he had good pro potential – and Missouri is a joke.
He does have a good frame and shot a high % from three, so maybe I just got a small sample size.

A Joke about Dongles at a Conference Led to Two People Losing Their Jobs and a Huge Mess for the Tech World
A woman overheard 2 guys sitting behind her at a the tech PyCon conference, discussing “big” dongles and forking. She got offended, tweeted a pic of the 2 guys and commented on it, and then she came under attacked and was fired by her employer.
The only reason I know PyCon conference, cause we use open-source Python programming in our GIS software for updating bldg plans.

how much of that is him and how much of it is Ben Howland? Jrue Holiday didn’t look very good in college either.

My ad block plus seems to be letting these autoplay ads through in the upper right of the screen…any tips?
Hawkeye helped me out the other day. If you open the Filters Menu on Ad Block (assuming this is for Firefox…Chrome is a bit easier than this I think), you should be able to create a custom filter based on the file name of the autoplay video. That should block it.
March 22nd, 2013 at 1:16 PM
Is it Adblock Plus? If so, on Firefox, just mouse over the vid and “Block…” should show up on the upper-right corner of vid, add filter.

March 22nd, 2013 at 1:19 PM
Ben Howland is a bad coach, but that didn’t prevent Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Afflalo, Darren Collison, etc. from doing well. Jrue wasn’t great, but good enough to be a high lottery pick.
More likely to place the blame on the Wear twins (who are poor finishers), and also the fact that Shabazz just doesn’t pass. Can’t get many assists that way.
March 22nd, 2013 at 1:19 PM
How is Shabazz Muhammad a marketable name in America? Isn’t Shabazz a popular first name with lot of black panther members?
I guess he was going for “memorable” vs “marketable”. Plus this was a little before the whole 9/11 thingy and we really started hating all mooslims here in amurca

I think that’s a testament to Howland’s mediocrity as a coach. All that talent, and how many titles?
Reminds of when John Brady was luring NBA first-rounders to LSU and couldn’t do shit with them.

right. I was thinking more that his system isn’t very helpful
yeah but her only real crime was doing something kind of bitchy on the internet. their company way overreacted and fired them without really doing any kind of inquiry and set this all in motion.

Not good, but great.
// Reverse Queefer’d
March 22nd, 2013 at 1:29 PM
Howland did get UCLA to three straight Final Fours, didn’t he? It’s not like UCLA has done nothing while he’s there. College basketball coaching in a major conference is probably 75% recruiting. You get good players to play for you and you suddenly look like a good coach.
March 22nd, 2013 at 1:29 PM
Everyone on the Internet should be fired.
/ Say newspapers everywhere
March 22nd, 2013 at 1:31 PM
I wonder how much of that was coaching and how much was sheer talent.
LSU reached the Final Four under Brady, but I would never credit him with coaching them there. That was talent overcoming coaching ineptitude.
March 22nd, 2013 at 1:36 PM
He picked out a name for his son to be the most marketable and came up with Shabazz Muhammad?
March 22nd, 2013 at 1:38 PM
to be fair, he timed his relevancy with the arab spring quite well.

I think Mainieri has them fully turned around from the Smoke Laval debacle. Love me some SEC baseball, lots of good teams. I remember when Miss State ruled the roost back in the Will Clark days.

All the good 20 year olds are in the NBA, not college. This is a bigger deal than you think, simply because the same-age competition isn’t there. He’s never had same-age competition at his level. Everyone elite his age was in college when he was in high school, and the NBA when he was in college. May not be the biggest deal, but it’s real.
March 22nd, 2013 at 2:44 PM
27 Soph/Jr declared early. That’s a big chunk to take off the top. Certainly hurts when you want to see how Muhammad did against the best at his age, then it’s really how he did against the 30-50th best at his age.
March 22nd, 2013 at 3:00 PM
if he’s older and he’s just ok in college, boom, scouting done
March 22nd, 2013 at 3:20 PM
Marinovich was BJ Penn’s strength and conditioning coach for a while, and I’m pretty sure Penn was working with him when he couldn’t answer the bell against GSP. It’s like fail follows Marinovich wherever he goes.
