Nada, have you ever watched Eureka? It’s 4 hours long and it’s one of the slowest paced movies of all time, but it is one of my all-time favorites and a must-watch for a cinematic Japanophile.

If you're into Japanese film, Shôhei Imamura is a great director to check out. Ballad of Narayama, Vengeance Is Mine, The Eel ... all great.Ditto Nagisa Ôshima ... Cruel Story of Youth, In the Realm of the Senses, Empire of Passion.

Love that movie, but that's Miyazaki. Some great ones from him as well: My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke.

Which should I check out?

Stray Dog is a good early one. Some people love Ikiru, but I find it overly sentimental.Rashomon, Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo and Sanjuro would be a good sampler of his great middle period.Ran and Kagamusha are highly praised, but I find them really formalistic and not very engaging.Late period, I really enjoyed Madadayo, his last film.
