Gonzaga was taken to the wire by Southern University as it looked like we might get that elusive first ever win by a 16 seed over a #1. Gonzaga had a nervous 3 point lead at the half, but then appeared to be ready to pull away when they got it to 11 points under the ten minute mark. Southern tied the game with four minutes left, but could never take the lead as Gary Bell, Jr. and Kevin Pangos hit key threes.

The 64-58 isn’t a good sign, though, as I wrote about last year in regard to Syracuse. Including the Orange, 10 of the 13 #1 seeds to win their matchup with a 16 seed failed to reach a Final Four. Someone needs to tell bench warmer three point monocle guy that. (is this the thing now?)
