Brian Urlacher Has Left the Bears as GM Phil Emery Puts His Stamp on the Franchise
Phil Emery was hired by the Chicago Bears as the team’s new GM in late January, 2012. The Bears were coming off a disappointing 8-8 season one year after reaching the NFC title game. But the 2011 season should have had an asterisk given all the late-season injuries that crippled the team. With Jay Cutler healthy, the Bears were 7-3 and poised for another postseason run; after he broke his thumb, the Bears went in the tank.
Enter Emery.
The natural move by the new GM is to find a new coach – “his guy.” The new GM doesn’t want to risk struggling with someone he didn’t hire, and everyone in Chicago noticed this immediately. Lovie Smith, who guided the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2007, had to know his days were numbered. [Memo to Rex Ryan: No playoffs and you're gonna get Emery'd.]
Initially though, Smith looked fine – after the Bears dropped 51 on the Titans, they were 7-1 and considered a Super Bowl contender. And then, it happened again – Cutler went down. He was knocked into 2011 against the Texans, the Bears lost the game, and the season once again went sour. The real killer was a devastating loss at home to Seattle in overtime. Losses against the Vikings and Packers followed, and the Bears, despite a 10-6 record, missed the playoffs.
Out went Lovie. Players were unhappy. This week Emery low-balled Urlacher, who had been the team’s defensive leader for the last decade – yes, he’s getting older and not the 8-time Pro Bowler he once was – and you have to wonder about the state of the locker room.
Their new coach is a guy who has toiled in the CFL forever. It’s a risky move by Emery – perhaps as risky as screwing Urlacher. Hate to bring this back to the Jets, but they made a lot of poor moves involving locker room leaders after going to two straight AFC title games, and that tinkered with chemistry. The replacements weren’t very good. The locker room became a free-for-all Now, they’re among the dregs of the league.
Good luck, Phil.

It’s probably the smart move, but I’m sad to see him go.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:32 AM
Urlacher should just retire a Bear.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:32 AM
I still think you’re overvaluing those two AFC title game appearances. The Jets were never better than 10-6, right? Maybe even 9-7 one of those years I think. They regressed to the mean the last year.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:33 AM
He’s bad now which is sad to see, especially when announcers unconsciously pity him by overselling a play made that was little more than the RB running into him…hope he just retires instead of running out the clock someplace else
March 21st, 2013 at 11:34 AM
I’m not sure you can really low-ball Urlacher. He’s not worth much these days. You can’t pay for past performance in the NFL and be a good GM.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:36 AM
tampa has been delusional on facebook about this
March 21st, 2013 at 11:36 AM
As long as ATL doesn’t sign him I couldn’t care less if he keeps playing. If some team wants to pay him $1 million a year to play football, he should take the money and run.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:38 AM
he should have plenty of money, hope he retires and doesn’t end up like a Franco Harris on the Seahags, OJ on the Niners, etc.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:38 AM
Sadly he’s probably just as good as any of the sad sacks of shit the Lions trot out at LB. Tulloch’s OK. They let Durant go, and re-signed Levy….
March 21st, 2013 at 11:38 AM
and silly bears fans who say they don’t want to see him with a division foe need to think straight. martellus bennett will have fun with urlacher
March 21st, 2013 at 11:39 AM
Exactly. Any TE worth a shit would rip him a new one.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:41 AM
He’s bad now which is sad to see
Agree. Almost as bad as Ray Lewis was this past season. woof.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:42 AM
Who’s still running the Tampa 2 for him other than Dallas?
March 21st, 2013 at 11:42 AM
When God is with you, who cares if anyone is against you?
March 21st, 2013 at 11:43 AM
always been a big urlacher fan…him in coverage in his prime was a fucking sight to see. the perfect MLB for a tampa 2.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:44 AM
if dick jauron were still in cleveland, that’d be a great fit.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:45 AM
This whole thing is about him wanting (or needing) more money. He wants one more multi-million dollar contract before he rides off into the sunset.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Derrick Brooks, bruh.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:45 AM
Well, someone else already made the Ray Lewis comparison, so there you go.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:46 AM
As long as ATL doesn’t sign him
Oh good gawd I just threw up in my mouth. No way Atl signs him please.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:46 AM
Saw a twitter report that Osi is taking a physical with Falcons. That’s fine, but I’d be pissed if that was all of Falcons “master plan” for free agency.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:46 AM
Sam Mills was a greatly underappreciated LB.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:46 AM
Dude isn’t getting it, though. He may get a 2 year deal where he will never see the 2nd year, but that’s it.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Absolutely.

March 21st, 2013 at 11:47 AM
derrick brooks played OLB, bruh.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:47 AM
I know, I was just saying he would have retired a Bear if this wasn’t about money.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:47 AM
He’d be a Raider if Al Davis was alive
March 21st, 2013 at 11:48 AM
Their master plan was to re-sign Moore and Baker, convince Tony G to come back and then sign a veteren DE. Osi doesn’t set the world on fire, but he’s better than what they have now, that’s for sure (and not saying much). They’re going heavy on DEF in the draft it seems. That’s worrisome.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:49 AM
Al Davis is dead?!
/ Thought that Cryptkeeper look was just an affectation
March 21st, 2013 at 11:49 AM
The real fuck up was not signing Ryan to a major extension last offseason or during the season this year. That would have opened up a lot of cash. Now with Ravens dumbass deal for Flacco, ATL is going to have to pay even more $$ to Ryan then they would have at this time last year or during the season.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:50 AM
Gadzooks. Can’t believe I gave incorrect credit to a Nole.
/googles Shelton Quarrels
March 21st, 2013 at 11:51 AM
that’s alright…ill admit a similar faux pas in that i thought dwight clark was a TE pretty much because he was tall, white and had a bigger facemask.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:52 AM
Brooks was a helluva LB though, always remember him making plays.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:52 AM
I get a semi every time I think about Falcons offense next year. Julio, Roddy, and Tony taking off and Steven Jackson in backfield.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:52 AM
A FSU “student-athlete” apparently fired a gun today. No clue what sport or who it was.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:53 AM
I might be misremembering but I think he picked off at least 25 Brett Favre passes that were thrown right to him over the middle
March 21st, 2013 at 11:53 AM
today FSU stands for ‘firing shots upward.’
March 21st, 2013 at 11:53 AM
But before it’s full on, you think about that DEF and it goes back into hiding.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:54 AM
Urlacher didn’t get screwed. He said he would have played for 3. 5 or even 3 million, but his agent asked 11.5 fo two years. I loved watching him play, but there is no question his tool kit is not what it was. As for the locker room, well, yeah, there’s that.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:54 AM
Please, we know every projectile launched by F$U goes wide right.

March 21st, 2013 at 11:55 AM
i get a semi every time i think about the falcons offense scoring 13 points in their playoff loss next year.

March 21st, 2013 at 11:55 AM
flawless victory.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:56 AM
As long as they stay healthy they’ll average 28+ next year. Maybe 30+. Defense will give up 25+ though.
March 21st, 2013 at 11:57 AM
I thought Lovie was a good coach, but he made the playoffs only 3 out of 9 seasons and once in the last 6. Emery was justified in making this move. (Looks like Rex, barring a surprise season out of Garrard/Kolb is going to make it 3 out of 5 with no playoffs this year).
March 21st, 2013 at 11:58 AM
What really annoys me is people still calling Matt Ryan checkdown charlie. That’s such a false allegation considering what he did last year.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:00 PM
funny thing is, with julio and roddy getting a lot of attention next year, matty ice will be finding steven jackson a lot underneath, thereby reaffirming his reputation, albeit out of circumstance, as captain checkdown.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:01 PM
When God is with you, who cares if anyone is against you?
I’m pretty sure something to that effect was engraved on the belt buckle of every German soldier in World War II.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:03 PM
This is so true. It’s hilarious, actually. I think Ryan’s YPA was in the top 5 or so of the league last year. The down the field think where the ball travels in the air stat (no clue what that’s called) had him in the top 10 I think (not sure though).
March 21st, 2013 at 12:04 PM
DAMMIT!!!!
March 21st, 2013 at 12:05 PM
The local sports radio guys made a good point after ATL signed Jackson. It might be the first time in his NFL career that he won’t be consistently running into 8-man fronts. Ryan should be able to carve up some teams next year if they can run it consistently.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:06 PM
That’s how Staff Daddy got all those garbage yards on his way to 5000. Down in the 4th, just dump it off to Joique Bell.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:07 PM
i just tried to open a bodog account and when it asked for country i live in and picked USA it said i couldn’t play….wtf?
is there a site i can?
March 21st, 2013 at 12:09 PM
Equally applicable.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:10 PM
Denver’s offense is right there. Their O-line is much better, IMO.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:10 PM
I play on Bodog (called Bovada now) with no problems, perhaps I got grandfathered in
March 21st, 2013 at 12:11 PM
Ryan was 32nd out of 39 in the “% deep” category.
Draw your own conclusions.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Drew Brees was 36th by that category. Yikes.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:23 PM
Drew Brees was 36th by that category. Yikes.
Sanchez is 13th BITCHES!!!!!!!
March 21st, 2013 at 12:24 PM
Sanchez is above Rodgers, Brady, P. Manning, Schaub, Romo, Ryan, and Brees.
Holy mother of god. What kind of stat is this?!
Jake Locker is above Sanchez.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:45 PM
Holy mother of god. What kind of stat is this?!
Insignificant.
March 21st, 2013 at 12:48 PM
He was 6th in AY, which measures how far down the field the average pass goes. So he’s not exactly checkdown charlie.
March 21st, 2013 at 1:40 PM
McCarthy Curse strikes again. First Jim Carrey now Urlacher. Jenny’s a career killer, but I can think of worse ways to go.
Hopefully Brian can catch on with another team and continue his gifted practice of diving on a pile and still getting all the credit by the announcers.
