Shane Larkin and Trey Burke Are Two of the Best Point Guards in College Basketball, But Neither Were Highly Recruited
The best point guard in the ACC, Shane Larkin of Miami, and the best point guard in the Big Ten, Trey Burke of Michigan, were both in the high school class of 2011. This year, they’re arguably two of the best point guards in college basketball – I’m sure Aaron Craft of Ohio State, Nate Wolters of South Dakota St and Peyton Siva of Louisville might get votes, as well – and could advance to the Final Four.
Larkin and Burke have come a long way from their high school days – Larkin was the 16th best point guard in his class according to Rivals and Burke, amazingly, was 26th. ESPN’s Recruiting Database basically had the two flipped – Burke was 15th and Larkin was 26th.
We won’t begin to wonder how the pundits could have missed so badly – AAU teams? Size? – but two years later, if you’re re-ranking the point guard class of 2011, both would almost certainly be in the Top 5. Two years later, this is how I’d rank them now, which is difficult, because a couple of them left for the NBA after one year: 1) Burke, 2) Larkin, 3) Teague, 4) Wroten, 5) Kabongo.
Larkin accepted a scholarship to DePaul, but transferred out due to a mysterious health ailment (which still hasn’t been made public). He had a tremendous year with the Hurricanes, making 1st team All-ACC and winning ACC Tournament MVP honors.
Burke was vastly under-recruited out of Ohio. He had lower-middle Big East teams after him (Cincinnati, Providence) as well as lower-middle Big Ten 10 teams (Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State). He is a near lock to win Big Ten player of the Year, and he’s a contender for the National Player of the Year award (with Georgetown’s Otto Porter and Indiana’s Victor Oladipo).

Does everyone love an underrated recruit, assuming they all hate the 5-star kids?

So badly? Both were top 26 by position. Recruiting isn’t an exact science.

Nobody like highly recruited basketball players.
/Said somebody.

Making predictions is difficult. Shocking story on tonight’s news after the movie.

In related news, Julius Randle just picked Kentucky giving them 3 of the top 5 and 6 of the top 18 recruits.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Bo Ryan?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
Cant wait for them to stumble next year and cal again blames everyone but himself
March 20th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
Mack Brown was helping Rick Barnes recruit them until he found out the basketball team doesn’t have defensive backs.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
Larkin > Burke
March 20th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
Damn. Not a CBB recruiting guy, but that sounds absurd.
You mean like last year?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
No, Ryan’s quote was, “Nobody likes high-scoring basketball games.”
March 20th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
It was robert morris’s fault
March 20th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
Aaron Craft is on Indiana? All those Big 10 teams look alike!

Plus most of the recruits that floundered this year and won’t be going pro. Cal has selective roster shifting to get to this season. I can’t remember if he is as skilled as Saint Self in shuttling players that won’t play into the ether of mid-major western college basketball without anyone noticing.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:33 PM
damn it, there goes my bracket! nobody told me aaron craft transfered to indiana!

Oof.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:33 PM
In his defense, it wasn’t his fault. And with the class coming in, they won’t stumble next year
March 20th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
This upcoming class is much better than the current one.
Noel is gone and I’m going to guess Poythress as well. Goodwin didn’t finish the season very well and could use another year and Cauley-Stein is the definition of raw but with this being a weak draft and facing the prospects of diminished PT, I think they’re gone.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
I’m sure Aaron Craft of Indiana
YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU ARE TALKING TO ME!
/look of bewilderment
March 20th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
Cauley-Stein is barely better than Daniel Orton who never started at UK. If he leaves now, he’ll be riding buses in the d-league or europe. I dont think Noel is NBA ready yet. His defense will only get him so far at the next level with his build.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
Izzo buys his rejects one-way tickets to Ames Iowa.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
Cauley-Stein is the definition of raw but with this being a weak draft and facing the prospects of diminished PT, I think they’re gone.
Gone from the team? I agree. Gone to the pros? Not those two.
Cauley may have a spot waiting for him at KSU if he chooses to leave.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
Let Kentucky run in another batch of recruits, make a Final Four run, and watch them run out to the NBA. The more they bring those guys in the faster they end up on probation.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
And yet he’s gone, no?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
I just have a hard time buying into recruiting class hype. Let’s see what they do against college teams and not high school or bad AAU competition
March 20th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
Link?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
I’m biased, but I don’t think anyone out there holds a candle to Larkin in terms of pure point guard play. Dude makes playing the position look easy. He always seems to make the exact right decision at the exact right time, and he’s quick as hell off the dribble. I know Burke is really good too, and admittedly I haven’t seen him play a lot this year, but I’ve been basically wowed by Larkin all year.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
Oh, Noel is gone no doubt. I just think he won’t make a real impact for at least 2-3 years.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
You have got to be kidding. Who doesn’t love a turnover machine, ball hog, 50% free throw shooting PG?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
Still a likely top 5 pick. And his defense will get him on the NBA floor giving his offense time to catch up a la Ibaka.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:42 PM
I’d gladly take Cauley-Stein and Goodwin in Syracuse. Our big men suck
March 20th, 2013 at 3:42 PM
Ah, this reminds me of another young player … not highly recruited, unknown coming out of college, only a third-round pick … and today he’s ELITE QB Joe Flacco.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:42 PM
Did someone say Austin Rivers?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
He’s an absolute beast after a couple seasons into NBA 2k13, though.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
The question is, where will Calipari be coaching when the shit hits the fans?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
I wish Michael Carter-Williams had even one ounce of Shane Larkin’s basketball IQ
March 20th, 2013 at 3:44 PM
Sounds like something a terrorist says before pushing the button.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
I guess you could question how every player will ever translate to the next level…High school to college, college to pro, but just because it is inexact doesn’t make it meaningless. And I doubt these guys are engaing in bad AAU competition. Largely, the AAU games they are playing involve higher competition than anything they will face in high school.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
a la Ibaka
/Sounds like something a terrorist says before pushing the button.
killing me.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
Speaking of Ibaka, nice to see Koufos, Faried, McGee, and others just abuse Ibaka, Perk, and Collison last night. Denver just hustles more
March 20th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
Hope he did the hook sign down when donning that UK cap. Smart career move.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:48 PM
Scalia, i hope pollsters don’t buy into the hype and give UK the preseason #1 ranking. Let them prove it and earn it.

TBL must be a closet video game programmer.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
This reminds of those ‘Highlights’ magazines “What is Wrong?” on the back cover where you could spot the errors. Flacco was highly recruited, he just transferred to Delaware when he flamed out at Pitt. He was widely known coming out of college because everyone knew his story. You are right he was taken in the third round. No, he’s no elite because he had a couple of good games in the post-season and won a Super Bowl.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:54 PM
Nope, you were even wrong about his draft position. He was taken 18th overall.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
Aren’t all preseason rankings based on hype? Who else would you give the #1 ranking to? Louisville maybe?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
Cleet, it was a snarky comment referring back to a JMac post last fall in which he referred to Flacco as an unknown third-rounder coming out of college. It became a meme here for a while.
I guess the meme is dead.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
Scalia, i hope pollsters don’t buy into the hype and give UK the preseason #1 ranking. Let them prove it and earn it.
Eh, it won’t bother me. Rankings in college basketball are completely meaningless.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
I guess the meme is dead.
I guess so. I was about to go Cleet on you. Anyhow, sounds familiar now that you mention it.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
I’m really not sure how you prove a preseason ranking. Isn’t it inherently based on hype?
March 20th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
I forgot about it too until you explained it.
March 20th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Sorry Nada. My bad. I don’t remember that one, just the lefty Matt Sanchez comment he made before that draft. That meme lives forever, I believe.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:01 PM
We really need that TBL memes/banhammered commenters spreadsheet to get put together.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
The “Joe Flacco, Third Round Steal” comment was made within the last few months. It’s funny because he barely even made it into the second half of the first round (18th overall).
March 20th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
Aaron Craft … plays for Ohio STate. Yes, i knew that.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
Cleets trigger finger has been itchy as of late
March 20th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Was a Ballz and/or SC thing… neither of which really come around. Sounds like something WWOS would like to waste his time on, though.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
J-Mac, I’d suggest you possibly include this article in the RU tomorrow.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
I’ve been bothered by seeing BS being slung around. The rest of that comment is still is BS, as was your tweet last night. But I still love you big guy.
/knocks chin
March 20th, 2013 at 4:07 PM
If we want to rehash yesterday’s thing, you were in the wrong. If you’re going to make specific comparisons, make them specific, don’t say generalities then expect everyone else to know exactly what you meant.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:07 PM
Cleet shoots first, asks questions later.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:10 PM
We can rehash.
It was a generic comment. I assumed everyone would know what I meant, and I was mistaken. In the wrong? Wouldn’t go that far. My specific comparision was spot on.
And yes sir.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:12 PM
Sounds like I missed something. Again.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
Larkin is the better story. But as a shameless homer, I’d make another plug for Erick Green in a similar story. Yeah, VT was absolute garbage. But he entered college as a completely unranked player, and just finished up his senior season leading the nation in scoring, 1st team All-ACC, and was named ACC player of the year. Not a bad transformation.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:15 PM
Yeah, that probably seemed tedious, but it should be known that assuming and generalities don’t work well in conversation, so a good idea to avoid them.

March 20th, 2013 at 4:24 PM
I was referring to your comment and his tweet. It’s okay. I’m not trying to make a big deal, just on a quest for more accuracy in sports commenting. A fruitless endeavor that will most likely lead me on a journey similar to that of Ash Williams.

He’d never allow it, I’m white.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:38 PM
Am I alone in feeling like the #26 and #15 recruit at any position in football, basketball, baseball, soccer, swimming, or whatever, is actually pretty highly recruited? I think you have to get to a story like “he received one offer from a D-III school then decided to walk on at such and such major university” before you can claim someone is lightly recruited.
March 20th, 2013 at 4:44 PM
He’d never allow it, I’m white.
Good call.

I agree.
