Lou Piniella Doesn’t Want to Say the Blue Jays “Raped” the Marlins But Well …
Lou Piniella appeared on the YES broadcast of today’s Yankees – Red Sox game. The subject of the Marlins – Blue Jays blockbuster trade came up and Sweet Lou struggled to find a word to describe it. Well, he didn’t really struggle. He knew a perfect word. It was “raped.” The Blue Jays raped the Marlins. But he didn’t want to say it. But he did. Piniella just joined YES Network over the winter. I’m not exactly condoning what the Marlins did this offseason but it isn’t hard to see why it would happen. You pay enough $ to win and go agree to that (Showtime?) series about your team and you end up in the cellar anyway, why not dump the guys that lost you all those games? They saved about $160MM in salary with this trade alone. What’s the better option: spend a ton of money for a team that sucks and your fans don’t give a shit about or save the money for similar results?

I don’t buy the Marlins’ explanation for dumping all those players. The whole “well we didn’t win with them” is a really dumb baseball argument. There are lots of teams with title caliber talent that have bad years, because of a variety of reasons. The Reds won 91 games in 2010. Then 79 the next year. They weren’t trying to dump Votto going into the offseason that winter. And the next year they won 97 games.
