The State of Texas Has No Teams in the NCAA Tournament
For the first time since 1977, the entire state of Texas is shut out of the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Could this be a positive sign for Marquette? That was the year Al McGuire won a national championship, though they probably need to bring back these uniforms as well. How long ago was it? Dean Smith had zero national championships. Mike Krzyzewski was the head coach at Army. I was wearing some ridiculous plaid jeans. Thirty-two teams competed in the NCAA tournament.
Via Kevin McGuire, here is a map of the teams in the 2013 NCAA field.
Not only does the site for the South region (North Texas) have no representatives in the tournament, neither does the location of the Final Four (Georgia). In fact, you could drive from Charleston, South Carolina, through Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas all the way to El Paso, and pass through only three tournament team states (Mississippi, Southern, and Northwestern State). When does football season begin?

Wow. This is really incredible. I remember a few years back when Tennessee had 6 teams in.
March 18th, 2013 at 12:42 PM
Where the hell is Southern?
March 18th, 2013 at 12:45 PM
Baton Rouge, about 10 mi. north of LSU.
March 18th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
Great post.
March 18th, 2013 at 12:50 PM
counterpoint (seems to be the term du jour): big ten hasn;t won an NT since 2000
March 18th, 2013 at 12:52 PM
I think the absence of Utah teams is equally noteworthy. BYU, Utah, and USU are all regulars and Weber has been to quite a few as well. Sadly the absence of Arkansas teams is par for the course these days.
March 18th, 2013 at 12:53 PM
Once again there are no teams from Maine in the tourney…
March 18th, 2013 at 12:54 PM
2 football titles (including one split) in the past 40 years, and 1 basketball titles in the last 20.

This was a thing? Really?

Does Maryland’s count?

March 18th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Is that really it for the two sports that matter? Damn.
March 18th, 2013 at 12:59 PM
I endorse this.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:00 PM
im only seeing one sport that matters listed…clearly you didnt ascribe value to this shitshow representation of basketball.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:00 PM
With the cookie dough-soft slate y’all have this year I think you’ll be just fine.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
If Larkin, Scott,Gamble, and Kadji had jerseys that read “DUKE” on their chests, they would be a #1 seed. Such bullshit.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
You could drive a car with your feet. That don’t make it a good fucking idea.

March 18th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
Why would you name a school in Louisiana that?
March 18th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Loved John Cooper.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Also, I love the fact that Northwestern State has made the NCAA tournament more times than Northwestern.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:03 PM
6 teams that will be fighting for a BCS spot come Nov. 24th?
Ohio State
Bama
UGA (all in, bitches)
Texas A&M
Stanford
Oregon
Thoughts?
March 18th, 2013 at 1:03 PM
probably to distinguish itself from jazz great bill evans’ alma mater, southeastern state.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:03 PM
Love Hoke and Rich Rod.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:04 PM
SEC for being a horrible hoops league (and it is) still has 6 titles in the last 20 years. To go with ELEVEN football titles going back to ’92.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:04 PM
I should probably add Boise to that list, too.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
I highly doubt the former. I believe you with the latter.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
Do they allow 26 year old undergrads at Duke?
March 18th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
As good an argument as any for not judging conference strength by national championships won
March 18th, 2013 at 1:06 PM
pretty much…should include michigan in there too probably.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:06 PM
Why would you name a school in Louisiana that?
Because it’s in the northwester part of the state.
Counterpoint: why is South Florida called South Florida? Tampa doesn’t strike me as the southern part of the state.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:06 PM
Tiger just lit the TBL Bat Signal. Over/under on how many posts on this in the next two weeks is set at 5.5.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:06 PM
Yeah because if Duke won the ACC tournament it would mean a team who didn’t lose to Georgia Tech and Wake Forest won the tournament and was deserving of a one seed.

I am under the assumption that Michigan is a year away. Of course now I just look at their schedule and I could definitely see them at 10-1 when Ohio State comes to town.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:08 PM
I believe Trajan Langdon was a 5th year senior. No need to be throwing stones.

March 18th, 2013 at 1:08 PM
I guess I shouldn’t add UGA for sure. It should be the Clem/UGA winner.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:08 PM
If you were to divide La. into quadrants, Natchitoches would be in the NW, but it’s probably closer to the middle of the state than anything else.

Seeing as they’re a university…I’m guessing yes.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:09 PM
Well, if Duke won this year it would mean they didn’t get waxed once by Miami, didn’t lose to UVA or more importantly twice to Maryland which included the in the ACC tourney.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:10 PM
He wants some more sponsorship monies. Good move for him.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:10 PM
she looks good there…good for you tig-daddy.
And I really do not know what else needs to be said about it other than this. Good for Tiger. I hope for his sake that she’s into Ambien fucking.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
better than having a bunch of press guys dig and pester with questions ad nauseum.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
Actually only the loss in the ACC Tourney impacted Duke not winning the ACC Tourney.
Miami wasn’t worthy of a one seed. Winning the conference in a down year does not excuse two unforgivable losses (one of which was a blowout, and it’s only fair to note that given how much you guys keep hanging your hat on blowing out Duke).
March 18th, 2013 at 1:13 PM
“kill rory” needed to be said.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:13 PM
I agree that has to suck, but there are drawbacks to being famous. The money and lifestyle comes at a price.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:14 PM
I didn’t say they were. But pointing to two bad losses over a season of work is ridiculous to me. They dropped two games to two bad teams, but were still the best team in the league.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:14 PM
Actually, it’s Southeastern Louisiana University … a former stopping point for Hal Mumme as well.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
in tiger’s defense, he was thrust into that role without much of a choice. he was famous while he was still a minor. it’s not like he could just say “fuck you dad” and quit to sell insurance after his family took on debt like that when he was a kid. he didnt know any better.
/reason why these young stars kinda freak me out…how can you put a kid who can’t handle these situations thru that?
March 18th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
Not as ridiculous as someone saying that them being Miami is what cost them the #1 seed.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
She’s got the crazy eyes.

March 18th, 2013 at 1:17 PM

March 18th, 2013 at 1:18 PM
a former stopping point for Hal Mumme as well.
It sounds like he’s coming to SMU to be co-offensive coordinator with June. Not sure what to think of that.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:18 PM
“well the state o’ ‘merica aint got no teams in the tixis tooniment.”
March 18th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
It’s true, though. The reason he’s paid the way he is is directly tied to him being famous. People like him (or like his game) so much that they’ll tune in. The prize money has shot through the roof in golf and Tiger is paid well to sling products. That type of fan adulation has its drawbacks. You generally can’t have the one without the other. While I don’t blame Tiger for that, it’s also the direct result of his current lifestyle.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
Tiger getting ass is the unquestioned favorite now for all tourneys. Holy fuck.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:21 PM
how can you put a kid who can’t handle these situations thru that?
somethign i struggle with. you know a price has to be paid to be great but until they are old enough to be self motivated and know what they want, how much pressure do you put on kids? i err on the side of no pressure
March 18th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
If Tiger got 19, he’d do commercials, show up for the Masters champions dinner, and you probably wouldnt dee him the other 364.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
I found out later in life that my dad (who was a coach) was more of a no pressure parent while my mom wanted to pressure us a bit more. I think my dad was concerned about being one of the crazy parents he had to deal with, so he overcorrected.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
little guy is into jerky. we will order some from here
March 18th, 2013 at 1:24 PM
cmon…he’d still play doral, torrey pines and firestone. tim finchem would probably give the torrey pines tourney a WGC title just to entice him a lil more.

/starts “Sumlin to Georgia” rumor.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:39 PM
One great class doesn’t mean shit for the here and now, though. Of the 30 players they signed, maybe 4 really contribue next year. Same with UGAs signees (32 total).
March 18th, 2013 at 1:41 PM
As long as Manziel is playing QB Texas A&M will be fine. It’s when he leaves that the loss of the tackles will be truly felt. Though A&M is also one KTFO shot on Johnny FB from being 9-3/8-4.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:42 PM
A surprisingly high number of people use their left hand in J/O videos.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:44 PM

you have to use the left hand, to balance things out. dont need my dangle looking like a treble hook.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:50 PM
I didn’t insinuate that they were not the #1 seed because they were Miami, so much as they weren’t the #1 seed because they weren’t a traditional powerhouse like Duke or NC. That is what I meant. I never once bitched about being judged for being the Canes. You made that up in your head Mike’s, because I never even hinted it.

Same reason Gonzaga didn’t get the 1 seed this year
March 18th, 2013 at 2:11 PM
Stoops to A&M!
March 18th, 2013 at 2:29 PM
While Gonzaga isn’t a Duke or NC, they have been relevant for some time now in college basketball. The Canes have never been relevant until this season. Most importantly, Gonzaga didn’t win the ACC title or tourney like UM did. My point was that if Duke had done what the Canes did, it would be a no-brainer #1 seed. But your argument is extremely clever where it not so flawed.
March 18th, 2013 at 2:30 PM
…were it not so flawed.
March 18th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
Being Miami and not being a traditional powerhouse is the same thing here, didn’t mean just because people have beef with Miami. Had it been Clemson it would have been the same thing.
March 18th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
agreed
